Fate is defined as the development of events beyond a person's control and so this series focuses on tragic circumstances, unsolved mysteries, incredible feats of survival, etc. In this video, we’re going to go over three stories of people who put their trust in the wrong person, and in the end, this would have devasting results. The first story is particularly brutal so as a reminder, although the events in this video are fleeting and non-descriptive, they are still highly disturbing, so viewer discretion is strongly advised.
As per KZbin's new AI disclosure policy, you may see a box pop up that says "Altered or synthetic content". To give specifics on how it's used on this channel, we use it to generate some scenes where real and stock images are not available, as well as some of the AI tools in various programs to speed workflow. Otherwise, all scripts, voiceovers, video editing, etc. is done by humans.

The soldier dying in the desert heat because the higher uppers can’t seem to follow orders and then forgetting about him for 2 days is just shocking. They left a man behind from a training exercise. How are soldiers supposed to feel confident in their leaders when something like this happens?
@deathstrike
@deathstrike 3 ай бұрын
Because unfortunately the one thing you cannot entirely "weed out" is ego. The vast majority of US Military Officers are for the most part confident, capable, and well trained. But there will always be the "goof troop" that just doesn't get it, or daddy's money secured them a spot in a prestigious academy. I saw a few of these in my Basic Training days at Lackland AFB in Texas. It's not always a lack of professionalism, it's the rigors of the job and you have to be trained to tolerate things like heat, cold, even pain. And accidents can and DO happen all the time. We just chalk it to the nature of the beast. You raise your hand, you are not forced to be in any military service currently, and you have to volunteer. So while this breakdown of the Chain of Command and a clear lack of thinking by personnel led to this, it is not the norm. And for reference, I am retired Air Force.

I joined the Marines around the time of this incident. In training, they lectured us about staying with the group, basically blaming the guy who got left out in the desert by his leaders. Shit rolls downhill, is how that phenomenon was usually described. The lower ranks always get blamed.
@Korijenkins1414
@Korijenkins1414 3 ай бұрын
Ego driven officers love to create unwinnable scenarios for the guys beneath them, then blame or even punish them when the inevitable happens. If Jason refused to take the post without his partner, he'd be charged with disobeying an order. If he takes the post, he gets left in the desert to die. And naturally, like you said, he's given the blame and not the shitbag who caused it all.

Have you ever been in a military court before? I've been in several, both domestic and abroad. I was a battalion legal clerk in the US Army for most of the 80s. I can assure you, military courts don't "cover their own people". Far from it. In fact, military courts are typically far harsher than civilian courts. There are exceptions of course, this case quite possibly being one of them. I can also assure you that this narrator, nor anyone else who wasn't present at the proceedings, knows all the facts. Unlike civil courts, military proceedings are not necessarily made public record.

When I was in the Marines I met an artillery gunner who was at the same operation, the whole operation was fucked up. The military can be super incompetent. My brother did basic in Georgia and was just stationed in Germany with his unit when a sat man in his unit got poached for an immediate deployment in Iraq. At the time no one was supposed to do more than 11 months in Iraq before being pulled. Unfortunately, when the unit who borrowed him got pulled back to Germany, they didn't take the poor guy with him. The poor dude stayed 2.5 years in Iraq before my brother's new commanding officer was doing a roll call over his new unit and asked where his sat man was. No one knew who he was talking about until they sorta remembered the sat man. There were quite a few demotions after that and my brother said the sat man was pretty messed up after being in constant combat readiness for so long.

I'm former military, and I am so many levels of enraged at the Marine story. It is hammered into us in basic-freaking-training that we NEVER go anywhere alone. You ALWAYS have a Battle Buddy. On top of that, an LT acting like he knows everything? Yeah, one of the scariest things to hear an LT say is "in my experience..." for a reason. I'll take heart in two things. One, Leavenworth, and other military prisons, are *not* places you want to be, moreso than a civilian prison. And two, a dishonorable discharge freaking ends things. No retirement, no benefits, and so many places won't touch you with a 50ft pole. McDonald's won't touch you because they have a contract with the DoD to operate on bases, from my understanding!

It's a weird thing to get hung up on but I did just because of the mention of how much water Jason had (3 QUARTS) and the idea his death was an "unprecedented tragedy" Because while it is an unquestioned tragedy it is far from "unprecedented". The army learned back in 1943 how far you could make a man march in the desert on 1 quart of water cause they used the 77th Infantry Division at Camp Hyder to find out. This and other like experiments including sending teams on 6 day hikes into the desert with only a time and location to arrive at lest they not receive any supplies lead to multiple people actually dying in the 6 months the 77th was there. In true military fashion the 77th commemorated that time by creating the "Hyder Campaign Medal/Ribbon, a mock decoration consisting of a broken thermometer mounted on a strip of sandpaper, symbolizing the infernal heat and the quality of the desert terrain." ANd yes I know these were Marines but it's not like the information gained from these experiments was kept secret between the branches (Especially since the 1942 generation of the 77th was 'adopted' by the Marines when they served together in the Pacific theater) I suppose the difference is the men of the 77th died under orders while Jason died because some Jackwagon was having a powertrip and no one else could be bothered.

There was a case here in the UK where three SAS reservists died in a selection march, after a 16-mile (26km) exercise in the Brecon Beacons in July 2013. Failings on the trek were described as "some of the most significant" a health and safety inspector had seen. L/Cpl Edward Maher, 31, L/Cpl Craig Roberts, 24, and Cpl James Dunsby, 31, died after the trek during which they carried up to 27kg (4st) on their backs on one of the hottest days of 2013. They were among the selection field required to cover difficult terrain in eight hours and 45 minutes. There is still no relevant government guidance relating to heatstroke on endurance events, and recruits and serving military personnel have continued to die on exercises over the years since then. The UK armed forces definitely don’t seem to be taking the dangers of heatstroke seriously.

Then he's blackballed by any veteran organization. That means he can't join the VFW or the American legion. Then what makes me laugh the most is he can't get a job with any company that has government contracts and you'd be surprised at the companies that have government contracts. The only job he could possibly get is at a gas station because even most grocery stores and fast food companies have government contracts. Not to mention most factories no matter how small have some connections to the government. I know it's not a harsh prison sentence but his life is pretty much over

Horrific situation Victoria was in. I need to read the book bc I can’t actually recall if she did her BSR pre jump checks. You never know expect to be sabotaged by anyone especially a partner, and may he rot, but basic canopy checks illuminate these types of malfunctions. Just for the sake of understanding preventative safety measures given skydiving is so safe bc of the adherence to such things, it might have been a relevant point to include in the future. Not relevant to the story itself and someone unreasonable could view it as victim blaming so ultimately I agree and get why you likely didn’t approach it. But it’s a potentially powerful moment to save lives regardless of circumstance henceforth. More Experienced skydivers I’ve been around are militant with BSRs and pre-jump plans with your jump master (or civilian equivalent). Need to check out the public docs and her book which I’ve heard is phenomenal

Comm and Electronics repair students, even cooks from the chowhalls were out there searching. But the area is so large that it was still easy to miss anyone out there. The Marine that perished gear was found with water still in his canteen as if he was trying to ration it (we are told not to do that. The area he was lost in, had he looked south, he would have seen BearMat at night (the range control station up on the hills between the training area and main side of the base. ). What made it even worse was that no one knew he was missing for several hours. It was when the armory was trying to find the last unchecked in weapon that they finally realized he was missing and more than 8 hours had passed.

Wow... That second story is outrageous... Jason died because his commanding officer flat out didn't care about his life. They saw their reputation and ego as more valuable than their men lives. I feel terribly for Jason... The point where he realized that he'd been forgotten must have been horrifying... And given that the exercise wasn't supposed to stretch into the following day(s), he likely saw very little reason to ration, and conserve, his water supply.. As such... he probably drank through 90+% of his water before realizing that he was forgotten and abandoned. There's quite literally NO WAY TO KNOW if it would have altered the eventual outcome of the mistake.. but.. if I recall correctly, one of the rules to surviving a situation like that is to stay put and await rescue. If he'd dug a small trench (NOT an easy task given the extreme heat, and noted lack of water), he could have rested within it, in the shade, and on the slightly cooler ground a couple of feet/about a meter, beneath the surface during the day time, and then attempted travel at night when the heat would be at it's lowest. His leaving "trail" markers was very wise. Although, sadly, in this circumstance, it was not enough to aid in his survival or rescue. One of the biggest, and most IMPORTANT rules of survival in the desert (even if you're not lost or abandoned in the middle of the desert) is to ALWAYS, _ALWAYS, _*_ALWAYS_* recognize your limitations in extreme heat.. and to _ALWAYS_ take the sunlight/heat seriously. About a decade (or so) back, I'd got myself into a bit of trouble, and ultimately was given a number of hours of "community service". (for anyone not familiar, the punishment of "Community Service", it is a punishment that, 99% of the time, takes the form of cleaning/picking up trash on the side of the road. And occasionally clearing out dense dead brush and weeds.) And while I was doing said community service (in the blistering heat of the summer) I somewhat suddenly felt myself getting dizzy and feeling sick. Thankfully, even the "Field Services" employees (those whose job it is to oversee the people doing the community service) understood how dangerous the heat can be, and I was given cold water, along with a 20(ish) minute break to sit in one of the trucks with the AC on full. The point of all the above rambling is simply to emphasize how dangerous, and deadly the Mojave/Desert/Vegas heat can be.. and how those of us whom have lived in it for most/all of our lives _understand how seriously it needs to be taken!_ Frequent breaks in a shaded area, and lots of water to replace what is being lost through sweating. Never, *EVER* underestimate how quickly this kind of heat can injure, or even kill, you.

Also if you have to serve under someone like that, this would have been the moment to stand up to them and say "sir, we are not leaving a single soldier in the scorching desert heat, this is not commando training and to do so means you are violating a direct order from our superiors to drop us off in pairs and inform command of our positions so that we can be retrieved -- either you get your carp together or if you are unfit to carry out your duty, this squad will relieve you of your duty".

"During the Spanish Inquisition it was a punishment authorities commonly opted for" is not true. Only around 2% of those who ended up before the Spanish Inquisition were executed, making the death penalty not common at all. This gets even more absurd when you compare it with the *secular* courts of the time, which issued *100 times* more death penalties than the Spanish Inquisition. The Spanish Inquisition actually had standards that were surprisingly progressive (for its time, it goes without saying it was still pretty horrifying by our modern standards), with free legal council for the accused, severe penalties for people falsely accusing others (in fact, the defendant had the right to provide a list of personal enemies he or she had, anyone on that list was inadmissible as a witness for the prosecution), and a surprisingly high burden of proof (again, for the time period). You were actually in *far* bigger trouble if you ended up before a secular court of the period. Torture was also generally avoided by the Spanish Inquisition, only being used in about 3% of cases. It was severely restricted in both methods used and who could be subjected to it, and a confession under torture was actually inadmissible. Again, this was *not* the case for the state, secular courts, where the use of torture was widespread. They also did not prosecute witches as is commonly depicted. In fact, the Spanish Inquisition's official position was that witchcraft did not exist and those who claimed to posses supernatural powers were simply insane, while those who accused others of possessing such powers were lying. The reason why they earned such a dark reputation is actually the result of propaganda from their enemies, Protestant countries of England and the Netherlands, both of which quickly adopted the printing press and made great use of it, not just for books and literature, but also pamphlets and propaganda. Spain, by contrast, was slow to adopt this new technology and even slower to utilise it to its full potential. This gave rise to the Black Legend, essentially demonising Spain, the Inquisition, and Catholicism. Most modern historians agree on this issue and the idea of the Spanish Inquisition going around burning and torturing people left and right has long since been debunked. For example, if you look at the witch trials, they were actually more commonly done by the Protestants, and they killed tens of thousands in Protestant Europe and the Americas (the Salem trials being the most infamous American example), compared to less than 5000 people that the Spanish Inquisition executed in three and a half centuries of its existence. The Spanish Inquisition at the time actually considered the witch trials as backwards. Also, to note regarding the topic of the video itself, Dirk Willems was equally seen as a heretic by the Protestant Dutch, it was just the Catholics that got to him first. The Spanish Inquisition is very definitely not a positive institution, and by our modern standards it is absolutely abhorrent. However, by the standards of their own time, they were actually far more lenient and had significantly higher standards for legal procedure than either the more ruthless and genuinely bloody *Roman* (Papal) Inquisition, or the secular courts.

As someone who served his entire 4 year enlistment in 29 palms that heat definitely ain’t no joke. Some people only train there for an exercise then go home. That was our home. Hydration was no joke, most water I ever consumed in my life. People think I’m joking when I say that sun can burn your skin with ease. RIH Brother sorry your people failed you. RAH 🫡🕊️

I think there was a bit of that too. They just didn't give a shit. "LOL oh well, we'll get a replacement rookie tomorrow, we'll be alright." Their attitudes are suspicious. I don't think they outright murdered him but they certainly could have abandoned him on purpose because their precious little egos got hurt.

As a resident of the Mojave desert... I can attest to the deadliness of the heat here. It got to where shutting off power to someone's house in the dead of summer couldn't be allowed, because that amount of heat can be a death sentence. And still, even in these modern times... the elderly routinely pass away from the heat every year.
