Fun. I'm just picked up a Com-pac 16 yesterday from CT in similar condition to yours and brought it back to massachusetts. It came with a very long modified trailer, and now I know why.

Great story, came across this as Im looking at buying a 1994 Com-Pac 16 Legacy, its a garage kept one, so its in great condition. We are in Florida. Congrats on the little one!

I used Gorilla grip bed liner on the deck Desert Sand color works great almost 10 years old now . My Com-Pac was in a cow pasture full of water and beer cans . But I did the same thing took it all apart and built a complete new inside . I painted the hull forest green and the deck is a light sand color . I used mahogany on the outside wood ( not the best choice 10 years later) but the teak was trash when I got it . I plan to go over it all again this summer and use Brazilian Teak this time . She is really pretty now but will even look better with the new wood . You did a beautiful job on yours she looks awesome . They are a blast to sail they don't point real tight but when you fall off just a bit they make up for it in speed I love mine . I have had many offers for her and even a few complements from power boaters . I think they are one of the prettiest boats on the water . Nice job enjoyed your video .

I recently bought a 1983 Compac 16 and am in the process of fixing it up. Not nearly the job you tackled. Before you took the topsides off, I thought you were going to give up. You did a stellar job! It looks beautiful!
@NilezII15 күн бұрын
Wow, you basically built a new boat from the SHELL of a boat! Determination-the keel work would have daunted me but good!

Super project! Congratulations on your effort and hard work which obviously worked out well. I am at the beginning of a similar purchase but with much less work to be done on my recently purchased ‘85 Mistral 16 foot closed cabin model.

This was a incredible super job I just buy one 1978 compact 16 and look I going too ending doing the same like you, before I gone put a reinforced between top of keel and bottom deck to testing how is the performance in water

Great idea! They need all the reinforcement they can get.

Great film of a great project. I restored my 81 but it was sound. I'm afraid I would have used a chain aw on your boat. Great job.

How did you lift the deck off and get it on the ground after disjoining it? I just got a c16 I'm trying to restore myself and having a brutal time trying to figure this out. Nice work btw!
@kpetingkepting7855 Жыл бұрын
I stripped it first (removed excess weight) and then tied some lines to it and hoisted it out of the way and pulled the boat out from under it. I believe you can lift it with a couple of folks though if you want to simplify things. I know I could lift the bare hull and flip it with another person (before reballasting). Good luck! They’re fun boats!

Wow that was fun to watch !!!! I'm restoring a 79 Catalina 25 and it has been sooooo satisfying spending my time bringing her back to life ! Amazing job my friend ! One question, did you send any pictures back to the old owner ? I bet he or she would enjoy seeing the boat . All the best, Monte
@timothycote85874 жыл бұрын
I did. I'm not sure it was a good idea. He had planned to restore her for a decade...it's tough having someone else complete your goals...I feel him though. I've been on both sides of this coin.

Amazing job, I am very impressed! Thank you for sharing the well put together video. Could I ask if you have a website, or blog of the project? I might be starting a similar project on a Compac 16, and your steps are really helpful to see. Thanks again!

I did blog most of the work, just search “Kpeting blog” and I think you should find it. I went into the details a bit more.

Beautiful restoration! Why did you have to remove the cement from the keel? I would have thought that that would be fine to remain. I understand drilling wholes to drain the water but curious about the cement.
@timothycote85874 жыл бұрын
The cement was cracked from being wet and freezing. The boat is up in New England. I'm sure this wouldn't be the case with southern Compacs. I also wanted to add lead and lower the center of mass/ effort and reduce the amount of cement to free up some bilge space.
@sharongreen51204 жыл бұрын
Awesome job. Don't think I would have handled the keel lead without face protection, though.
@timothycote85874 жыл бұрын
Maybe not, but it's pretty inert unless vaporized. On my house rebuild from 1900, I never took off my respirator when heating and stripping the lead paint.

Nicely done! Curious why you modified the rudder? What exactly did it do to improve performance?
@kpetingkepting78552 жыл бұрын
Hey Eric, yes, the foiled rudder was far superior to the flat metal blade style rudder that she came with as a standard.
@trailzable Жыл бұрын
@@kpetingkepting7855 That foil rudder, of all the goodness you shared (thanks!), seems to be stuck in my fascination. Did it make the boat faster? Easier to tack? More responsive? More balanced? Less weather helm?
@jackrabbit50476 жыл бұрын
Very enjoyable, and informative, too! You've made her better than new, and that's quite an achievement. Believe every time someone brings a worthy old boat back to life an angel gets his wings!
