The root cause is 17 regular season NFL games are too many. The financial incentives to keep adding more regular season games is obvious, but it means everyone is beat up after 16 games. If you've locked your spot in the playoffs (if any) then it's perfectly logical to use Week 17 to play your backups in a real game. This issue will only get worse if the NFL expands to 18 regular season games.

Why, the chiefs have nothing to play for, they had locked the number 1 seed, they had their bye in week 6, they played 3 games in 11 days. They don't need to risk injuring players on the last week of the regular season when they have to go play in the playoffs. Look at Christian Watson, Zay Flowers, John Metchie all injured in week 18

There's no reason to put unmotivated star players in a meaningless game and putting them at risk of injury. There's a reason starters only play a limited amount of time in preseason games(the definition of meaningless games)

Patriots and Giants had nothing to play for in Week 18 the Bills and Eagles when they rested their starters, the Broncos still had their playoff chances on the line against the Chiefs so obviously they are going to play hard to ensure they get in. What else do you expect?

I agree 100%. They basically fixed that game, but players can't bet on games?? When it's that obvious that you're throwing a game the league should at minimum fine you. Edit: That goes for tanking as well.

What does Mad Dog think about Green Bay? Their starting AND backup QBs were both injured in Game 17! It appears Jordan Love will "probably" be available for the Packer's playoff game against the Eagles, but their top wide receiver got hurt and is out. So Green Bay nearly lost their starting QB AND top wide out to injuries in Game 17. That would've crushed the Packer's playoff hopes.

The Chiefs have a responsibility to the Chiefs. They do not care about any other team nor do they care about how close their backups keep it with Denver. The Chiefs not only rested starters but also played a vanilla like preseason scheme on offense and defense, not wanting to put anything on tape for playoff opponents. With Denver playing starters and approaching the game like a playoff game, that's a recipe for a whooping. Again...KC did not care. They have a responsibility to themselves and nobody else. Fans and talking heads can punch the air all the want. Ask Packer fans if they wish their team had sat Christian Watson in week 18
