Spot on analysis by McCourty and Hawkins. If you're Pickens the quickest way to discourage teams from doubling you is by running your routes hard and drawing as much attention as you can while trusting your QB to make plays to other guys. When you pre-emptively take yourself out of the play by not running your route because you're getting doubled then you're just making it easy on the defense and encouraging them to keep doing what they're doing. So even from a selfish perspective it's dumb. That thing Pickens does sometimes where he just dances a little bit in front of press coverage and then turns around like he did on the interception vs KC is just nonsense.
