@@brandonschwertley2723 The F-14, starting with the earliest A models had the Link-4 datalink. For its time very advanced, but in the 90s thoroughly outdated, it had two modes. Link 4A to communicate with a single donor (AWACS) and Link 4C to share data within a flight, both were AFAIK mutually exclusive and the peer to peer members had to be selected on the ground. The Tomcat and the F-15C had also the standard IFF capabilities, beyond that the Eagle had a more modern datalink, supposedly an early form of NCTR and most importantly nothing else to do. Not a pound for air to ground got the Airforce into the nice situation that they would always get priority on the AA assignments, otherwise their most modern jets would sit idling on the ground, a luxury the Navy didn't have.

We do get plenty of warnings about such things, but take for instance the Formosa Strait in current days. The last time I was there, the Chinese were operating very heavily in international waters, and there was a LOT of warnings flying back and forth between the Chinese and various other nationalities on the guard frequency. Meanwhile, us civilian airliners were just doing our thing in and out of Taipei. All it would take is either one itchy trigger finger, or a sneak attack, and you could see this sort of intermixing very easily. Then it just boils down to the RoE and ethics of the combatants.

Something I rarely if ever see is people holding TMS up (the lock button) on an enemy that radar hasn't picked up yet, but is visible on datalink. I'm not a definitely sure it does this, but it seems that holding it focuses the radar on the vector of the cursor, instead of still searching the entire width that is set on the MFD. It feels like this helps aquiring a target that radar shows up on datalink, but the on-board radar has trouble picking up

Dude these scenarios with civilians are super interesting. I wonder if you could do more with a bandit hiding behind an airliner. Scenario: Outside of a major city, a badguy steals a Hornet out of a neighboring air base carrying bombs for a training mission, but he's out to blow up the [silly objective / baby milk factory]. The badguy knows the city is heavily monitored, so he's going to fly near an airliner headed for the local international airport, then veer off at the last second to hit the target. Growling Sidewinder and Longshot scramble Vipers out of a different airbase to intercept, but they have to interrogate all of the planes to find the bandit. Then once they've found the bandit, either use guns to NOT hit the Chick (friendly aircraft), or wait till they have a clear shot with missiles. Pre-post-edit: Actually this is kind of scary... and I rewrote it to not be like a certain historical event that happened in the year 2001. But something like that would be really cool. Might have to play around with which aircraft you would use for the quality of the radar, and possibly no datalink, to make it so you would have to find and identify the bandit.

Whilst avoiding collateral civilian deaths is very much a Western thought process, there are nations who would put military operations above preservation of civilian life.
