I have a question laoshi 🙋♂️. Around the 4:19 mark, you're talking about rules for 2 third tone syllables. The example, ni hao: is that one word in mandarin? It's two words in english. I'm asking cause if i were reading chinese, do i treat it as one word? Cause say you're reading something and between two words, one ends with third tone, but the beginning of the next word is also third tone. So is the rule for between syllables of a word or for any time 2 third tones come up? Apologies if you've already answered this somewhere else (i haven't watched all the videos on your channel). Thank you for putting out the content 🙏

Hi there, it’s a good question. You can treat 你好 as one word but also you need to remember them separately because 你 is second person pronoun and 好 can mean “good” as an adjective and “very” as a adverb. Technically if two third tones meet (one from the end of the first word and one from the beginning of the second word), they can all change. An example, 你好可爱。this is a sentence (你: you, third tone; 好: very, third tone: 可爱: cute, third tone + fourth tone). When we say this sentence, the tones becomes (second tone + second tone + third tone + fourth tone). However, it depends, in this example, 你 is the pronoun; 好 is the adverb modifying the adjective 可爱; so all these words are grammatically connected in this sentence. I’ll give you another example, 小米手机 (小米 is a Chinese tech company, third tone + third tone; 手机 means cell phone, third tone + first tone). When saying this word together, the tones become second tone + third tone + third tone + first tone. You can see when the second character (米 in third tone) meets the third character (手 in third tone), 米’s third tone didn’t change, because in this case, we consider 小米 and 手机as two separate words. This is one of the biggest challenges for Chinese learners and even for advanced learners they still make this kinda mistakes when saying sentences. But one or two minor mistakes like this usually wouldn’t affect conveying meaning. You will also get better in this as learn and practice more. I hope I answered your questions.

I am always confuse with the 2nd and the 3rd tones, they seem almost similar
@keystochinese09215 күн бұрын
The 2nd tone is like saying "what?" which sounds like asking a question with intonation raised. The 3rd tone in a word often omits the "going up" part (shortened to a low, flat tone without the upward rise.) This is especially true when the third tone appears before another tone. Tip: Focus on keeping your voice low and steady, almost like holding a whisper.
