Just wanted to add my two cents to the discussion about Mantz and Young's PMP (predicted marathon pace) workouts. From hearing Coach Eyestone talk about these sessions, it's not that they're using the workouts to predict their marathon race pace, but rather they're running the workout at their predicted marathon race pace. So, basically, like Matt said, they already have a firm idea of what the pace is before the workout. The purpose of the workout is to feel that pace out, get acquainted with it over a long distance, make sure they can get nutrition onboard at that effort, make sure nothing's tweaking, make sure it's not overly ambitious/under-ambitious, etc. The workout is a trial-run of the predicted pace, not a workout to predict the pace.

A convo so nice, I listened to it twice. The all-knowing algorithm recommended his video to me last week, really got a lot out of it. Second listening was worthwhile; so much good stuff in here

I, too, listened on both channels. Matt understands running so well and from so many unique perspectives, love how he can break it down on such a basic level, while still factoring in the nuances is so cool to see. So many nuggets of wisdom here. And it’s been fun watching Andrew improve even more since joining SE Academy. Thanks for doing this!

I think you guys think kaizen is good because it’s giving you better than expected predictions whereas my prediction is about 10 minutes slower than where I think I can run, but idk maybe if I pay for the app it will update my prediction to be more accurate

Hey @Alex-ut7el you can tailor your prediction via the hamburger menu top right. Pick the races/marathons where you performed well and Kaizen will update with a prediction that will better match expectations.

@@RunKaizenthis doesn’t help, funny thing is when I put in my goal is to run a half marathon which for me is coming up Oct 6th my prediction is 1:08:58, but when I put in the Indy marathon I plan to run Nov 9th my prediction is 2:33:02 which has been getting slightly better each week from 2:35 where it started. These aren’t quite equivalent predictions in my book, I’m hoping to run closer to 2:25. I think the algorithm may be heavily factoring in the fact that I have never run a marathon before, but as for my training I’ve been doing about 100mpw. I’m 26 and ran collegiately so I’ve got about 10 years in the game, so it’s not like I’m running this mileage out of no where I’ve been doing this for years. I think the algorithm will slowly catch up by the time Indy comes around but maybe something should be tweaked a bit here imo.

@@RunKaizenI think the prediction could also be off because of my heart rate. My heart rate is typically higher than a lot of good runners it will be 145-155 on easy runs 7:00/mile where I know some runners will be 125-135. I couldn’t hit those heart rate runners unless I ran maybe 9:00 pace. I’ve also recorded typically higher heart rates during efforts. In both hot and humid conditions this year I ran a 5 mile race in 25:37 where I averaged 185bpm with a max of 196 and during a half marathon where I ran 1:10:51 I averaged 183bpm and 193 max. Both measured by chest straps.

@@Alex-ut7el Your prediction for the half marathon is calibrated by your previous half marathon performance(s) and therefore an accurate prediction of your current fitness. Since you haven't run a full marathon yet, Kaizen isn't able to use a previous marathon to calibrate your marathon prediction. We are rolling out a new algorithm (possibly before 9 Nov) that will be able to take performances across any race distance and apply it to calibrate a race prediction from 3000m to 50k. Stay tuned.

Is there a lot of really good things here it’s funny cause well I’m a trail ultra runner doing 100 mile race this year and my coach is saying next year he wants me at the first half of the year to work on nothing but like 5K up to half marathon Road and trails to do more races and and I couldn’t understand really why and then you brought it up. I remember when Steven Scully said that lotta stuff over really really well real good video I had about the this year. What he put me on is because I’m 62 this year and I had some injuries and stuff and so he put me on a training plan for I’m maxing out at, 50 miles a week and I’m stronger than I’ve ever been. Give me a couple days to go to the gym and but I hit these hills. I’m like cruising up the hills and I’m amazed and he said yeah last year you were worn out I guess you get older do you wannafor recovery days and when you’re younger, you probably gotta push those to get what you’re trying to do so really good video. I’m getting a lot out of it subscribe.

This is where Stryd and the idea of CP really bares fruit. Mileage is king....until it isn't. Once you hit that level of aerobic efficiency the next big gains are power and RE. My last marathon moving time was sub 3:15 with RE of .84. If I am able to work on my RE and get that close to .90 (assuming my math is right) that same number of watts changes the time from sub 3:15 to somewhere near 3hr 3mins....that is MASSIVE.
@sweatelite
@sweatelite 5 күн бұрын
Before I respond would you mind clarifying what CP and RE mean?
@timtrenholm3698
@timtrenholm3698 5 күн бұрын
@@sweatelite CP = critical power. RE = Running Economy, basically power/velocity. How well you are able to apply your power to pace. I used to have a higher RE, but my cadence was out of control (197spm marathon, 200spm half marathon). So we fixed my cadence (186spm and 190spm) but my RE has dropped. Fix one thing, then need to work on another! LOL. What I have found to work really well are long hill reps at CP (1km to 1.6km all uphill). This results in a lower impact loading rate...basically CP wattage uphill has the same load as easy running on flats. Strength training for lazy people.

@Matt: just a general question about coaching in the US (and Australia): I got the impression that besides college or at professional level, there are rarely average Marathon runners or masters athletes in generell (which most if us are) that are coached by local running/ track and field clubs. that is so different than in germany/europe. is non professional "club running" a thing at all in the US??

interested to know your view on this as a coach. how fast can somebody with normal genetics and no running background get in running a marathon after 5 years of training? lets say starting with a base of running a 4hr marathon within the 1st year.
@sweatelite
@sweatelite 5 күн бұрын
Good question without a way of determining a specific answer - purely anecdotally I’ve noticed people end up at under 2:20 from that point and also at no faster than 3:20.. so it depends on many factors, mostly- how dedicated the athlete is but also the raw ingredients the athlete brings to the game- small things like whether the athlete played a game involving lots of running in his/her earlier years also factor in.
@fidru
@fidru 5 күн бұрын
"no running background" and "normal genetics" are pretty hard to define. also important is the starting age, time one can invest in running (while maintaining job and family) and injury resistance.

To me I really enjoyed this conversation too. I love very much Matt and also Andrew must be a really great athlete . I hope he will do a great time in The "Marines Marathon" on October 27, including the 10 km race, that must be really a national beautiful sporting event and much loved by all American athletes and People . A few weeks earlier, there will be here in Europe the half marathon of the "French foreign legion" in Castelnduary. (French) The Foreign Legion is a splendid and prestigious military corps, ( The historical battle of Camerone in 1863 by Captain DANJOU is the symbol and national celebration holiday of all legionaries in the world ) the equivalent of the American marines here in Europe, surrounded by the same glory, admiration and affection of every true military and the civilian population for the spirit and ethical code that distinguish those who are part of it."Semper Fidelis" firts of all to the Legion as the first Homeland and to the other legionary brothers as members of the corps.
