I'm loving this series of videos on the #2ndChapterofActs, #JesusRevolution and those times in general. Having grown up in the fifties and sixties it's all very relevant. Becoming a christian and enjoying the music makes it even more so.

Glad he shared. I was able to look back at my life as he spoke and reflected on my early days of simple obedience to the Lord. During those days, obeying the Lord did not receive social media post and approval. And newsletters (or books) were not written about the experience. Obedience involved his last statement: if you love me, you will obey and keep my words (Jesus). That was the outcome, you obeyed because of love, selfless love for the Lord. Buck Herring is one unusual man. I had the great blessing to work twice with Buck, Annie & the group for two concerts in Milwaukee in 1980-81. Buck could be intimidating: 6'5" (I'd guess), square-shouldered and the unquestioned leader of 2d Chapter's entire entourage, yet he was the most gentle, most genuine of leaders. Here are a few precious anecdotes: The first concert in May of 1980 was held in Waukesha (outside Milw) in a, 1,100-seat venue. Before that our largest turnout was 350. We had no regular Contemporary Christian radio at the time, so word-of-mouth was our primary means of promotion. After sound check, the troupe of about 20 of us hopped in their bus and headed out for dinner at a local restaurant. After all orders were placed we waited about 20 minutes for food. Everyone was served but Buck, who was told they had run out of his order. Gently, he just smiled and re-ordered. 15 minutes later, the very apologetic waitress brought the same message. He had every reason to be upset -- the delay, the lack of customers and the fact that we were on a schedule. But Buck never complained; he was more concerned about the waitress than about his meal. He ordered a side order and all was well. We got to the venue late, of course, but what we found was truly a blessing -- both the parking lot and auditorium were packed with an enthusiastic and eager crowd of believers... an incredible work of God. The next year we were at Milwaukee's Bruce Hall with a crowd of about 3,000. Free will offerings are notoriously low and the usual agreement was the promoter and artist(s) would split it 50/50, out of which the promoter would pay all promo and accommodation costs. The hall rental was considerable for us and as we counted, the "take" looked like it may be lower than hoped. Buck pulled me aside and told me, "You take what you need, Brother, and if that leaves one dollar for us, praise God." All worked out fine and, of course, the concert was great... but that comment by Buck was among my most treasured memories of it. He meant it... and this interview reflects that. One more... Bruce Hall (a/k/a Milwaukee Auditorium) was part of MECCA, at that time the main downtown entertainment venue. It shared an expansive basement with the Milwaukee Arena, home of the Milwaukee Bucks, etc. The night of the 1981 concert, the Ringing Brothers Circus was at the Arena. After sound check and prayer time (BTW, being invited by Annie Herring to join them to sing "We Worship and Adore Thee" was unbelievable!), Annie, Nellie and I roamed around the facility. We went downstairs into this vast underbelly where all of the equipment, etc., was stored for the shows. Right beneath our stage the caged circus lions were waiting their turn (and they let us know we weren't particularly welcome in their temporary den). "The Roar of Love" had just been released and the three of us had a great time brainstorming how we could get those on stage for that song! (We chickened out... Ha!) What great memories! Thank you, Brian -- and Buck (and Annie, Nellie, Matt, Steve, et al)! And thank you to the Lord of Music!

I am from Wisconsin, too! I was not yet born again at that time. Wish I had known all that was going on! Sounds awesome! Am thankful to be a part of God's Kingdom now and am so blessed by these stories and the music God gave these willing souls. ❤

@@carrienottingham5215 Where in Wisconsin? I'm now in Stevens Point. Yes, they were exciting times. Though I had only a minor role to play, because CCM was so new and so foreign to the rock music that had so thrilled our generation, all of us felt strongly that we were on a divine adventure. This was the tail-end of the "Jesus Revolution." With few exceptions, the industry people I was privileged to meet and work with were fine examples of God's grace. Keith Green, for example, called me several weeks before his Milwaukee concert. As Buck described in this video, Keith told me God had been speaking to him concerning promoters' costs so he didn't want any hotel or restaurant meals, which were normally expensed by the promoter. Keith asked only for a place to park their bus ("a Walmart parking lot is fine") and, if possible, a home-cooked meal. One of our key volunteers arranged for both. I can't imagine that happening today. God's best to you, Carrie.

Amazing interview! I grew up in Sacramento and at the age of 12 went to my first concert: How The West Was One tour! What a blessing! I love the 2nd Chapter of Acts but Keaggy has always been my favorite due to the emotional ties with the death of my best friend in 1980. “What A Day” it will be as I will reunite with him someday in the heavenly realms before the Lamb! 😊

As I'm listening about How the West Was One I'm thinking "Time was 9 minutes, Rejoice was 15." I still listen to that album set and those songs in particular regularly. Thanks for these great stories. With Footnotes is my favorite CCM album ever, I don't see that ever changing, Keaggy's Love Broke Thru is right up there.

Bummer about the Keaggy Time solo that wasn’t recorded. He’s just the greatest…and I’m a deep fan of players like Landau, Lukather, Huff, Pierce, etc. But Phil is…as Buck said “Other worldly” as a player. The greatest gift I’ve ever seen…

Brian, the interviews with Annie and Buck were phenomenal. You and Buck referenced some things that Annie had shared in her interview that didn't make the final cut. Is there any chance of a Part II interview with Annie? So many of us would love that.

I’m not a Christian but I’ve always been intrigued with this musical entity and their earnestness. Such a uniquely frenetic sound. I always theorized the inspiration of their sound originated with the Beatles “Because” from Abbey Road. Their complex, Spector-esque “wall of sound” recording approach was utilized by huge mainstream acts like Queen and ABBA but aside from those 2 bands it was rarely as crisp and flawless as 2nd Chapter. Would be cool to see them reunite for a new recording, even if it’s just an EP.

The beautiful thing about this group of people, is that they got their inspiration and power by God through the infilling of His Holy Spirit. Not by man or some other song. Not my might, not by power, but by my Spirit says the Lord! Amen.
