I had never hear of this Dyson guy until I watched him debate Jordan Peterson at the Munk Debates. In a debate about Political Correctness he called Peterson "an angry white man" and when he couldn't come up with any good argumentative counterpoints to Peterson's points he resorted to personal attacks, rude uncivil language and provocative race-baiting tactics. He certainly failed to provide any convincing points to support his side of the argument in favour of political correctness. Indeed he tried to hijack the debate make it a race baiting exercise. He demonstrated that he is not only a terrible debater, an infantile intellectual and a blatant racist, but worse than all that a complete A-hole. Some people aren't ok with a Black man, extremely intelligent or educated speaking about something wrong that a White man in this case Bill whom other people including myself have liked and respect for years acknowledges that he used a word which is harmful to the people who it was invented for and used against for decades . In my opinion the word is so hurtful that it is not justified for the Rappers and other Black people to use under the guise of changing it to an endearment in order to excuse Black people using it. This doesn't make it hurt less when said by a White person or person of a different nationality considering the history of the word. For example, the Chinese community has much more license to use “The C Word” (The Other C Word) than me. It is condescending to treat black people as a special class that needs to be protected from having their feelings hurt! Almost everything that any comedian says will be offensive toward someone, whether that be women, gays, blacks, latinos, or heterosexual white men. If you really think that someone is your equal you won't treat them like a sensitive child that needs to be protected from " Trigger words". We all know that Bill apologized in order to save his job, and I don't blame him for doing so. But people need to quit demanding apologies from comedians in general. It is their job to try to make things funny, especially the things in life that hurt the most.

I thought it was funny too. Maybe because I'm not american? This debate about words seems a bit surreal, as an outsider, although I know the history of that word, and I wouldn't use it myself, even in a joke. However, I've come to know, and appreciate, Bill Maher because he makes jokes that very few other comedians would make. Isn't that why he's successful and he has a show on HBO? He's joked about almost every group he doesn't belong too. The debate is really about: can you joke about group X if you're not part of group X? Can you use stereotypes about group Y if you're not part of group Y? For example, Bill Maher is not gay, yet he has joked about gays so many times, jokes that I wouldn't dare to make myself, as a straight man! Maybe it's funny coming from him because we know there's no hate behind his jokes.

Exactly, which is why his "I'm a comedian, and sometimes we go for laughs before fully thinking" was a valid defense. But it doesn't matter how many times he apologizes or how sincerely (and I do believe he is sincere) he means it; nothing short of jumping in the De Loren and going back in time will resolve this 5 second flub for some. Or (more insidiously) perhaps they were waiting for him to say something off-color and have simply used it as an excuse to push for firing. There are those on both the far Right and Left who have had a vendetta against Maher for decades.

Chris Rock has made it clear that the reason why he doesn't play college campuses is because instead of listening if a joke is funny, the students sit there and police if any of the words could remotely "trigger" anyone. To use an overused word, it's Orwellian. And for Dyson to lecture Bill and then use the term "white boy" is pretty hypocritical and disgusting. Especially as a sociology professor. What would you think if someone had said during the Obama years, "Well, we have a black boy in the White House"? Would you think the guy's racist? Because I sure would. The use of "boy" in reference to men has been used to demean and disempower them by placing their social status on the level of children. Historically, since white men have held the reins of power throughout most of this country's existence, this has been directed towards black men and other minority men. But now that whites no longer have superior status, some minority speakers have felt at liberty to demean white men by using this term. It's just as racist as calling a black man "boy" and needs to be called out.

Its weird, that the obvious lack of understanding context, shows prominently, these days. Same thing happened on Colberts show. Stephen Colberts show routinely insults trump amongst others. But he's usually doing it in such a way, that it goes over a lot of peoples heads, including, embarrassingly, our president. So, when Colbert did his monologue that he got in trouble for, he started with high brow things that were more defamatory, i was laughing my ass off. Then when he got to the low brow, one or two-liner insults, i personally was thinking what the fuck. You're smarter than these jokes. But, almost immediately, it dawned on me. That it was on purpose so a dumber person would know he was being insulted. Then I laughed my head off again, knowing the premise. And it worked! The trump camp got offended from the lower intelligence styled, jokes. And they went to spin it like he was homophobic. Genius monologue rooting out stupid people. I feel this joke from maher wasn't delivered perfectly, but good enough. How else do you stick it to people who are about shameless. What especially sucks about maher wanting to apologize for this was he also had to go all in, and apologize to the republican whom he stuck it to in the first place. Ahhhhgony.

#2 opinion is that that is a wrong assumption. Bill is not afraid; he felt & knew what he said was wrong. He didn't feel comfortable during or afterward and was big enough to apologize. I didn't like Ice Cube's attitude and manner in which he brought in response to Bill's apology. Bill whom many people including myself have liked and respected for years acknowledged that he used a word which is harmful to the people whom it was invented for that purpose, and is still used against decades later, especially by illiterate or callous people. Harmful words can trigger people of all races. There is also someone who has not and can't be hurt by a word that was invented for a particular race different than theirs can easily criticize and accuse the affected person of proclaiming victimhood. Who are they to proclaim & judge what hurts others who were or are victimized or affected by something that can't affect the one judging. Black Rappers and people who use the word know it was invented to harm during murders, other victimization wrongly keep the word in use under the guise of changing it to an endearment as an excuse to keep using the foil word created as a weapon against people of African decent. This does not lessen the pain any more than it does when a Jewish or Polish or person of other descent is called a derogatory word regardless of a person who feel they have the right to judge and ridicule and dispute the fact that it is hurtful while mischaracterizing the person who rightfully feels hurt and speaks up disregarding the fact that people have a right to speak up when they are victimized. Bill is a decent, knowledgeable man who apologized for a word he knew was historically and currently used to victimize those it was invented for.
