Dark Matter and The Hollow Places genuinely scared me which is a huge deal for me and they're some of my favourite books! Also have you read Stolen Tongues? I listened to the prologue at night and it freaked me out

Some great looking books there, loved both the T.Kingfisher's Cara is Carrot don't worry. Used to love James Herbert back in the day, they used to scare me then but wouldn't now. Heart Shaped Box is great too.

For the T. Kingfisher, Carrot is Cara. It's been a while since I have read, but I think “Carrot” is a nickname given by her uncle. The blurb about portals is more accurate to the book. The shop mentioned is still the book, but it is misleading. I didn't like the book because my expectations were different due to these blurbs.
