Its really amazing where God has led me. I lived most of my life in the world of "whats in it for me Christianity." The churches i attended were always about seeking signs and wonders. The idea that we all had supernatural gifts that we could wield like harry potter characters. And here i am now, embracing a teaching of accepting hardships, expecting nothing from God in return for our worship, etc. My old church told me that if I had enough faith, God would bless me with worldy riches and an easy life. My new church tells me that when i grow closer to God, i will suffer. And for some reason, i have comfort in that. It is truly humbling.

There is a wonderful Orthodox Icon you may have seen. It has Christ on the left side of the icon, carrying the cross across His back, on the way up the mount to be crucified. On the right side of the icon are a number of recognizable Orthodox Saints, each with a heavy cross strewn across each their backs, following Christ up the mount. "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me."

How do I find a church like this? All the churches around me seem so superficial and self obsessed. Almost like they use God as a status for themselves or to excuse themselves of any wrongdoing.
@user-wz5gc2td9s2 ай бұрын
@@lahmsauce5759 there were two orthodox churches within traveling distance from me, and the closest one was the one I ended up going to. If I had to point to its benefits, I'd say the most important one is that we have an amazing priest. The man relishes teaching the Word and is exceedingly intelligent. Another great thing I enjoy is that a majority of the church I go to are converts. I've heard stories where newcomers go to a church where everyone is ethnically Greek or Russian and the parishioners weren't exactly welcoming. So I'd say the most important thing is that you can trust your priest. If you can do that, everyone else is background noise. We are there for God after all. Let those who are prideful work out their own salvation with fear and trembling.

It is true that when we attempt to repent and turn to God, it displeases the demons. But God restricts them, if He didn’t, we would all be dead. However, there is also an experience most people have when they seek Orthodoxy of God testing our desire for Him, offering us the opportunity to show how much we truly want Him. God bless you.

Stop counting, start praying (more). Be the person who doesn't self harm, not someone who hasn't for a time. I speak entirely from personal experience in this matter, may God forgive me if I do not speak truth. You will not become free if you recognize yourself as a sinner in abstinence. You must accept that the sin does not define you and move from it. Then it will be harder to return to it. It will actually be difficult to desire it, let alone follow through. You did 30 days. That's very good. You can do it. I am over a year and a 3rd with no desire. (You can count backwards later for times like these)

At the risk of being irrelevant if there is some misunderstanding on my part, I would say one thing (since it’s apparently common anyway): You are stepping into another world. Do not be dismayed if the path appears difficult, or even if things are seemingly worse than before. It happens. With faith, humility and fear, press on toward the goal and prove your desire to be with Christ in His Church regardless of what or how many obstacles appear (that will work out for our good if we have the right disposition). I certainly cannot regret seeing it through. Forgive me if I wasted your time with something you never had in mind. Good day!

I am 18 and really want to convert to the Orthodox Church, but I have some big non-theological barriers. I was raised Lutheran, with some dispensationalism mixed in. My dad especially is a die-hard pre-trib rapture dispensationalist. If I were to tell him about my Orthodox direction, he’d be enraged, constantly trying to refute me and accuse me of apostasy. I can humbly say I don’t know the answers to all the possible questions my Protestant family could raise, but I can’t seek out it those answers from a local parish because they wouldn’t let me go. A rock in a hard place, is a good way to describe this situation. As long as I am still under their roof, I won’t be able to attend an Orthodox Church. The dispensationalist doctrines being uttered by my family are troubling me more and more, they are becoming more crazy, out of line and butchering scripture even more. I just don’t have the capacity to bring the truth to them yet. I can definitely see what Father Spyridon means when he says it keeps me in an “infantile spiritual state”. Any advice?

I am in a similar position, I want to join the one true Orthodox Church but my parents are Protestant and will probably disown me when I do. Just continue to learn and study holy orthodoxy while you bide your time, patristic nectar and faith unaltered episodes with Jay dyer and Father Ivanoff are very good. Jay dyer has helped me to understand the truth of orthodoxy on his personal KZbin channel so he is definitely a good resource to learn theology as well as why Protestantism and Roman Catholicism are clearly heretical and a-historical. God be with you!

@andreaslaugh24872 ай бұрын
Could I offer a suggestion that might help you navigate this? You mention at this point you couldn't answer all the questions your family would raise, and that's okay. News flash: Most "cradle Orthodox" (me included) wouldn't be able to do so, either. But God's put you into this family for a reason. Run with that. Maybe this is your chance to do "research"--almost like an anthropologist investigating another culture, in which you try to understand why these people believe what they do. So when a religious topic comes up, ask them (in a non-confrontational, non-emotional way) to explain how they came to believe as they do. Don't debate. Just try to sincerely understand their line of reasoning. Remember, you're an anthropologist doing field research! So ask questions and make your responses very simple. "I see." "Can you elaborate on that?" "Hmmm, interesting." If they quote Bible verses to support their position, take notes exactly as any scientist would. In a sense, you have your own private research lab at your fingertips. Afterwards, find out how the Orthodox Church differs from your parents' faith, why it does, and how that view is supported by Scripture or Tradition passed down from the Church Fathers. (It's truly amazing how many things we think are new issues, unique to our age, that also happened centuries ago & were addressed brilliantly by the Saints). Write up a summary of what you learned--a kind of "compare and contrast" chart. Doesn't have to be complicated; a nice little synopsis of major points will do nicely. Over time you'll amass a valuable treasury of information that will not only sharpen your understanding of your own beliefs, but will also give you tools to explain your beliefs to folks like your parents. Most of all, be patient & trust in God to guide you! Hope this helps.
