There is something to be said about how much fun it is to be the straight man. Usually when I play fighter it's because the rest of my party has chosen to be, shall we say... non-mainstream with their builds. (I'm looking at you 14 Wisdom Elven Cleric, and you too Dual Classed Sorcerer/Wizard.) I like fighter because it does one thing really, really dependably well. If nothing else you can count on the fighter to have a competent turn of probably hitting and dealing reasonable damage if nothing else.
@cyancyborg14776 жыл бұрын
Holy shit, you're right. Being the straight man is unique when being unique is the norm.
@memenumnoscopus6 жыл бұрын
I had fun with this. I played a character with the goal of being as un-unique as possible. I was a human fighter, whose backstory was "got drafted into the army and assigned to join the adventurers". None of his stats were hugely high, his feats were lucky and tough. He wasn't special, no tragic history, no prophecy, and no real experience of proper adventure. He kept getting freaked out by things other adventurers took in stride, and sometimes was needed to offer a sane man's perspective on things.
@Nixonitus6 жыл бұрын
@Gideon Chan nah, man. The best backstory is literally just to make a standard human fighter, who was at a young age recruited as a soldier, I'm simply served as a soldier for most his life. He is a simple person, born to Farmers, with simple goals in mind as he travels on adventures. Making some badass Leonidas type is all well and good, but, if you want to make something truly unique, I have to seriously recommend the mundane. There is something so special about playing a standard rank-and-file soldier in the game full of fantasy weirdos and anime edgelords.

my human fighter's name is Hue Mann, he was drafted into the army and the war ended after he finished basic but before he got to actual combat, he got to keep his equipment though, and since he had all this training and gear, he thought "well, might as well do something with it all..." and thus the simple but well mannered farm boy became an adventurer. no tragic backstory well, his Pa has a bad leg and can't help as much on the farm as he used to, but he's saving up his gold to hire a healer to head on to the farm to help him out. and maybe a few hired hands for his lil'sis and Ma as well. he didn't even realize he was a "hero" till he heard a bard in a tavern telling a story about the time him and his buddies all saved that merchant caravan from a Drow raid. he's a bit of an old fashioned gentleman, cause he was raised with country manners, sometimes city life confuses him. magic alternates between horrifying and wonder inducing to him, and the first non human he ever met was in the party, and he's always worrying he might offend by accident. Clayton Weyl that’s actually a super interesting character idea. A fighter I’m in the process of making is a Jaguar tabaxi champion who is a gladiator. Of all things I decided to make him a dual STR and DEX build with high CON and Charisma. His lowest stat is a 10 INT but that’s because he’s self centered and went from exotic slave to proud gladiator. Some ideas I have is that he uses an opportunity to join the party, re-awaken his wanderlust, get accustomed to a non-gladiator lifestyle (as he’s become somewhat stagnant because of it). I’d have a little tidbit where he’d get mistaken for a leopard and get angry, is self conscious of his short tail length (he’d lie and say it got cut up during a fight), and adores theatrics.

Honestly with all the different archetypes for Fighter you could easily have a typical party makeup of Tank, Caster, Range boi, and you wouldn’t even need a healer since Fighters get to just heal themselves whenever the fuck they want. @willferrellssweetnips5 жыл бұрын
My first (and only) epic character was a black Tiefling Arcane Archer who was inspired by Han Solo for the reasons Nightflash478 listed. I totally get the allure of being a "regular" character forced to use martial talent and cunning to overcome fantastical adversity. It's like bringing a knife to a gunfight. You are probably going to get the sh** kicked out of you. But for me there is nothing more satisfying than having a character that has an unremarkable upbringing claw his/her way out of a dire situation that might outright kill his Wizard companions, or beguile his Barbarian party members. My favorite example being when my lv.15 fighter defeated Orcus in his temple with the party, then got separated from the party and had to end up killing Fraz-Urb'luu by HIMSELF, with less than 25 hp. Needless to say a fair amount of that was luck, (not the feat) and how the dice rolled for me and Fraz. Action surge and indomitable, as well as rolling the highest initiative helped me cheat death lol. Maybe that experience of cheating death as a fighter is unique to me, but that character narrowly escaped A LOT of insta-kills and the like thanks to perks unique to his class. Which is why fighters and rogues will (probably) always be my favorite classes to choose from. Cheers!

But Aragorn is a Ranger.
@willferrellssweetnips5 жыл бұрын
I can appreciate that, he's got the specialized training for a specific region typical of a ranger. But I see him as a swiss army knife type character that can handle any battle situation pretty well, and come out on top, no matter what terrain he's in. For that reason I see him as more of a fighter.

IMO fighter is the best class, it gets the most customization options and you can roleplay any alignment, faith or motivation. not to mention it is the class that best embodies the fantasy of the everyman rising to the ocation. fighter is the guy who looked around him, saw a world full of dragons, wizards and eldetrich horrors and despite not having supernatural abilities, despite not being favored by the gods looked at the sharpenned piece of iron in their hand and decided to do something anyway. and if you think there's no roleplay potencial in that then I don't know what to say to you.

My first Fighter: a Fairy that adventures to act like the heroes in the books she has read. And they all have huge swords… with the Heavy trait… Luckily, she’s going to be a Rune Knight, and store a Large Greatsword she finds on her journey in her Bag of Holding, which will deal 4d6 damage per hit. The thing is, she will want to cast Enlarge more than once a day, and the party only has 1 caster. So she’ll multiclass into War Magic later, so most of her spells will be Reactions, and the penalty of Cantrips only won’t affect her Extra Attack and Action Surge.

i feel accomplished in having a fighter that has a happy backstory, their sibling died but rather than being all angsty she used it as a chance to become an adventurer to honor their legacy

I love how you say fighters are for newbies so much in this vid but honestly I think barb is easier for newbies. No armor means no worrying about whether you’re wearing it or not, and a lot of your stuff is passives instead of options you can do. EDIT: Barb as in barbarian, not bard 😅

@Robinson Meinander Both are capable of casting spells. Next time learn the classes instead of this weird gatekeeping thing because it clearly isn't going well.

@@petalb4677 barbarians may be great at hitting things too. In most cases yes, they are newbie-friendly. However, barbarians are not the choice if the person is new to DnD, but not to roleplay in general. A roleplayer like me (experienced several LARPS) needs something to roleplay, not just "hulk smash!". Personally, I love palladins, they have the spirit we go to High Fantasy worlds for.

I've always felt like barb was more the beginner choice in Neverwinter Nights than fighter. Feat choice can be a huge hurdle for any new player, so suggesting new players play the feat monkey sure sounds like some sort of hazing ritual. Once you know what you're doing, the amount of flavor you can get out of those feats is rather interesting, however. I cooked up a monk/fighter/champion of Torm build that has improved knockdown, improved disarm, and called shot as well as improved power attack and improved expertise.

"If you pick fighter, you are also likely to pick human." I am also True Neutral. But seriously, the extra feats of fighters and higher average ability scores of humans do give a lot of room for customization.

Fighter is great when you want to focus on RP, because he is so simple in combat you don't have to worry about it.

Also pretty versatile in terms of what backgrounds you can pick. Pretty much anyone of any race, culture, or socioeconomic background can learn how to hit things as long as they're physically fit enough to do it.

yeah, that was my main reasoning for the character I'm going to start playing tomorrow, because I've realised that I'm slow at combat, something I intend to improve on, but I wanted to have a relaxed, fun time to RP that character.

Whereas I pick it for the opposite reason. Roleplaying at the table is pretty low on my list of things to be doing. I wanna be in the dungeon, fighting things, and be left standing.

Depends on the DM! Spellcasters could easily be reduced to cantrips and a burst or two for the last encounters if the adventuring day is intense enough.

Love how the human fighter we know and love, Magnus Burnsides, was most of those stereotypes (sorta rough, likely straight, maybe white, man, tragic vengeful backstory) and then Griffin decided "let's give him a two handed weapon as well" and five arcs later decided to go for broke and in a couple episodes made him also middle aged, grisled, with a VERY tragic and MYSTERIOUS backstory basically ticking the last few boxes And he still fits in super well with his compatriots and was the source of like, one of three or so cries the entire Balance season
