Its so frustratingly baked into the game system though. Spells, monster abilities, paladins, magical items, and so many other bits of the game reference your alignment. Cutting alignment out of the game is so much work that its best to just sideline it as much as possible.

But it's such a good and detailed system that has varied and nuanced meaning and depth! Then again the amount of times I've seen Lawful Stupid paladins not only charge the BBEG during the OPENING SPEECH of some thing only for us all to DIE HORRIBLY cause his good guy boner was too busy pointing in the direction of the nearest evil he couldn't think straight past trying to scream SMITE! and running in the general direction of all the rocks about to fall and kill us. So maybe you have a point here.

Same here, but because I made a promise to not speed. I also subscribe to the bus drivers' response to tailgating: let off the gas until they go around you. The impatient B's usually crack at around 10-15 mph below the speed limit. I usually give them a warning shot by slowing down 5 mph and then returning to the limit.

Interestingly, old versions of D&D actually made you lose levels if you changed alignment, which is why a lot of players that started in those old editions treat alignment as a hard and fast rule as opposed to something that can change over time.

Lawful Good: Determined to get their party to stay away from the grass they're not allowed to walk on because there's a sign that clearly says they're not allowed to do that. Neutral Good: Doesn't walk on grass because they saw the sign and merely asks the party if they could be careful as they don't want to get into any trouble. Chaotic Good: Digs and entire path underground for his party to get past the grass. Lawful Neutral: Flies over the grass so they can take a shorter route and not crush the grass. True Neutral: Just walks around the grass and let's those who want to walk on grass get in trouble. He's not their dad. Chaotic Neutral: Takes the sign with them and probably draws a face on it. Leaving those who ignorantly walked on the grass to their fate. Lawful Evil: Chops a path through the grass so they're not walking on it. Neutral Evil: Ignores the sign and walks on grass normally. Chaotic Evil: Burns all of the grass so there is no grass to walk on.

My favorite character ever was LE. He was a fill in for a character that died early-mid campaign and was a straight up mercenary hired by the king to ensure that the 'Heroes' were sticking to the script of supporting his power plays with the neighboring counties. After a few sessions, the party had started planning to do many very naughty things, and as such, the response they received from an LE merc straightened them out right fast. "Good plan, but if you really want to burn out the cultists, we need to ensure proper air flow into the mines. use your spells to open up tiny shafts and then pump cloud kills and poison smoke into the main shaft, then collapse the exits." "Oh, good idea with taking out the foreign saboteurs, but why are we just going to let this chance at a good frame job go to waste? Animate that corpse, Then I'll put on that other ones outfit, and lets go get our neighbor in on this war.... Well it is one now that they are trying to kill the king, so lets make it 2v1 instead. Beside, the our soon to be allies pay well for adventurers right? We can double up and earn twice the pay" "Hey Leader, I love tha plan you have for these POWs, and I think you are making the right choice. You be good cop, and only burn them when they lie, I'll be bad cop, and burn them for fun! I think you will make a great Blackguard some day, just gotta take that last step from the old 'Boss', and the first step towards a new one, eh" Never did see a bunch of murder-hobos straighten up and fly right so fast as when my Merc started agreeing with them. DM even let me 'turn evil' at the end when the BBEG offered to buy my contract once the king was dead. I was balanced into the encounter and everything.

I kinda agree with that but don't at the same time, I have played most alignments (and get to choose them myself) including a chaotic evil character who made himself look lawful good and when the party wasn't looking snapped the neck of the tavern keep to gain ownership of the tavern so he could use the secret tunnels underneath to run his own smugglers ring. I do agree with it cause we had a chaotic stupid fey warlock hexblade who almost killed my character multiple times because they couldn't get the hint that the puzzle was solved.

I think it's probably best practice to just build your character and think about the roles you want them to play in the group/story and let the alignment come naturally from there. Starting with alignment and building off of it can often (but not always) lead to stale and rigid characters.

In my first campaign/game we just started playing, kinda neutral until we ended up siding with the cult of the dragon, befriending a black dragon and raising an army of lizardfolk. We had no idea what we were doing there just happened to be an encounter where we sided WITH the evil guys cause from our point of view the good guys were the assholes. Lots of fun 11/10 would be neutral again.

Warning: I'm gonna nerd out for a moment and talk about Dragon Ball. I often hear people point to Vegeta as the posterboy for chaotic good, but this example reminds me of Goku. Goku is chaotic good because he always saves the Earth from the big bad that wants to destroy it, but he also stays on Earth and waits for any villain to show up, that in actuality wants to kill him more than destroy the planet, and basically never takes a second to think that maybe when he hears some planet destroying dude is on their way, he should teleport to them, teleport them and himself to a world with oxygen but only like one power signature on it, and duke it out with them there, potentially using the dragon balls to restore said planet if it does end up destroyed. That or just challenge them to a fight in the Hyperbubonic Mime Shaver.

It’s hard to come up with a lawful evil character, the only one I’ve ever come used was a 12 year old Warlock contracted to a fiend who was acting as their parental figure. Meaning they always followed “moms rules” making them lawful but “moms rules” made me actively harm others or ignore them getting harmed, Making them evil. Lawful evil is surprising easy to role play and i never argued with my party members often because I “moms rules” never actively went against them.

My lawful evil character is quite nice to everyone, but just goes ham when someone hurts her or another party member. And she's not a hired criminal or anything, she's pretty lonely actually, having crashed on sea and not knowing where her home is. Her main goal is taking out her revenge on the kraken that sunk her ship and taking its teeth or something as a trophy. The lawful aspect is obvious, and all the intense thoughts of revenge made me choose evil as best representing her. Note that I first made the personality, *then* chose the alignment that fit best. First choosing alignment and then cramming in a fitting personality is way too limiting. The character works out quite well, and it's nice to have a lawful tiefling, despite the PHB saying that they tend towards being chaotic.
@shadowdroid776

It's pretty easy for my character to be lawful evil, because he's a cleric. He follows the rules and code his God laid out for His followers, and this deity is a chaotic evil being that wants to overthrow the world and enslave all non-elven races. So, my character is just a happy little cleric that loves his time destroying the lives of many while assisting and helping all elves he meets. Sometimes he even gets to bring back toys from the surface for his children and some weird food for his God, which is the "highlight of the trip" for him.

My lawful evil is quite willing to do good things, help people, be cordial, etc. The key is his "law" is ALWAYS thinking about what he gains from it in the long run, whether it be reputation, trust, money, allies, etc. If he will absolutely never be truly altruistic or selfless, it HAS to give him a benefit in some way. He will not be truly vulnerable with others, and is always planning things out, carefully playing on goodwill and "friendship". He feels no friendship or love, and believes it's just more efficient to blend in.

I disagree. Chaotic isn't about being selfish or ruthless, it is about not binding yourself to rules. A lawful good character might not do a good thing because they promised they wouldn't. A chaotic good character is going to stare at them like they are stupid, ignore all social norms, and do the thing anyway.

The best way to create a character in DnD is with two questions: (1) What does your character want? (2) What are they willing to do to get it? By answering those two and basing all your character choices around those answers, you've got like 80% of your character work done. The other 20% is deciding whether those answers change throughout the game. This is literally just the alignment chart but actually tailored to your character. What they want is the Good-Evil scale, and what they are willing to do is the lawful-chaotic scale, except these questions allow you to actually determine personal motivations for your character.

I don't think that counts as Lawful Evil. ...unless the murder victims are bandits, minions of an evil dragon, cultists who are literally trying to destroy the world, executed criminals, etc. It would also count as Lawful Evil if the people he killed are paladins, watchmen and people who strive to eradicate evil. Double Lawful Evil if he also promised to not screw the resurrected murder victims' mom, and screwed their dad instead.

But this might only apply to the early versions of the Myers-Briggs type indicator. After the Myers-Briggs company took over maintenance they revised the instrument multiple times, and have provided scientific reports based around it crediting the reliability of the instrument. That could of course all be biased, but at the same time most research debunking the Myers-Briggs instrument is rather old, so it's hard to tell what still applies. Also, when using it next, try using a Jungian perspective ( www.teamtechnology.co.uk/myers-briggs-criticisms.html ) which can solve some of the criticisms leveled against the instrument (while also explaining other criticisms, the main part I'm pointing at is Criticism 5). I had to argue about alligments with 2 people, both of whom were really against it, like it's an enemy or something, and in neither cases did I understand their standpoint. For me it's farly simply a projection of a characters personality and actions in the setting and group. Obviously it's subjective, altough it's weird when the chaotic good cleric tries to argue that the idea of threathening a city's underworld boss for money or he (and in extension us as a group) would let giants siege and capture the city and destroy them, namely the same city in which the same cleric has an orphanage fits as a chaotic good act, because he was just bluffing.... So what I'm trying to say is that just because your character has evil actions it doesn't mean that's a bad action, so being mad about the alligment isn't too useful on the long run. Except if you are a cleric or paladin. In which case your character CHOSE to serve tenets and dogmas, so everything outside of that alligment is a character flaw. (Since the characters themselves took their class with the intent of pursuing that ideal). And characters should have flaws, but when the player thinks that destroying half a village just because a peasant short-changed him with money FITS being good, then that's not okey, lol.

@@Limrasson In my experience a lot of people just feel like it puts them too much in a box. Now, personally I kind of lean towards that being a good thing, because new players especially really struggle with nuanced characters, they just become bland and undefinable. But say you want to play a character who's very utilitarian, it's really fucking hard to argue that such a character would be "evil", because they are very much doing everything in their power to bring the best outcome to the most amount of people. Yet at the same time, it's hard to accept them as good too, if you're not a utilitarian yourself, because they just pushed a guy in-front of a trolley to keep it from killing those five other people. If you're with moderatley experienced players, and you want to play something like GoT, chuck away the alignments and just be careful about designing your moral codes. If you're with new players or you're more of a LoTR person, keep your alignments but dont lean too hard on them. That's my take.
@Limrasson
@Limrasson 4 жыл бұрын
@@DiddntFindANameLol As I said, I think it's the reverse. You can very easily use the aligments on GoT characters too. Or in real world for that matter. But yes, the chart can help players design their characters, but I think, for the most part, it is not meant to be used before the character, but after. Like you figure "well my characters is an utilitarian, which puts him on neutral. But he stays from being too underhanded and tends to ignore the possibility of rewards if the reward has no key role. That puts him towards good. On the other hand he strongly opposes characters who act out of this mindset, which puts him towards lawful. Like this. The obvious exception being paladins and clerics where you have to figure out the code or god you serve. But that's a player choice as well. So don't understand the hate against the chart.

Because Alignment is badly put together in D&D and anything that tries to take it seriously is stuck with the fact it is terrible. Thus this is better because this is critically taking the system apart from a cynical standpoint of what the system is, as an argument as to not use alignment in the first place.

@@Draiocht012 Literally all of that is true, which is why we see alignment being slowly removed, it's almost entirely pointless at this point. If people play to the alignment then they do end out as bland stereotypes like this video shows, if you want a good character then play them as a character and not an alignment. What purpose does alignment really serve? I'd argue, none. Now a system which has consequences and rewards for certain behaviors, is a much different and fundamentally better system.

Lawful Evil is the most fun I've ever had! Everyone expected me to be Palpatine levels of evil, but I ended up being the most moral (relatively speaking) when it came to non-combat moments (I'm evil, but I had standards and integrity lol). Which resulted in people being occasionally blindsided whenever it was time to be an evil monster (I definitely swung for the fences whenever those times came up 😆)

I use a system I made called Morality and Discipline scores. You have two scores from 0-100 which correspond to coordinates on the alignment chart. Your morality score is how good/evil you are, and your discipline score is how lawful/chaotic you are. 0,0 is as chaotic evil as possible, and 100,100 is as lawful good as possible. Your alignment changes when one or both scores change between 33/34 and 65/66. The DM instructs you to add or subtract from either score based on your actions/decisions. Usually only 1 or 2 points at a time, unless you do something really out of fucking character like have your lawful good paladin murder 20 peasants on the streets while singing a lullaby. This becomes really relevant if you add in some magic items that are alignment locked, and bring back alignment restrictions for deities, oaths, commitments, etc.

My favorite character I've played took so long to figure out an alignment for. He's a Tiefling Barbarian who speaks in a folksy accent, insists on acting politely, is utterly faithful to his wife, and believes ripping someone limb from limb is "having a spirited debate". He is both the most gentle character I've ever created and the most brutal. After over two years, I decided he qualifies as Lawful Evil. He's just the strangest character ever to exist in said alignment.

In most cases I'm confident in people catching on the sarcasm but alignment in general is such a touchy and debatable subject in D&D that I wanna be extra clear in this disalimer that however you choose to do alignment, as well asyour own beliefs as to what defines each alignment is totally valid, and up to you and your play group. and if you dont care at all about alignment and never bother with it, then that is valid too."

Your description of alignment is very accurate, and gives a very good guideline for how a stereotypical person of that alignment would behave. Now all a player has to do is take their chosen alignment and figure out how their PC would behave in certain situations: by the "book" in some, and totally different in others. And they better be ready to shift alignment at least once in a campaign because a character that never changes is (usually) a dull character.
