Its so frustratingly baked into the game system though. Spells, monster abilities, paladins, magical items, and so many other bits of the game reference your alignment. Cutting alignment out of the game is so much work that its best to just sideline it as much as possible.
@7h3m41n94m34 жыл бұрын
But it's such a good and detailed system that has varied and nuanced meaning and depth! Then again the amount of times I've seen Lawful Stupid paladins not only charge the BBEG during the OPENING SPEECH of some thing only for us all to DIE HORRIBLY cause his good guy boner was too busy pointing in the direction of the nearest evil he couldn't think straight past trying to scream SMITE! and running in the general direction of all the rocks about to fall and kill us. So maybe you have a point here.

I kinda agree with that but don't at the same time, I have played most alignments (and get to choose them myself) including a chaotic evil character who made himself look lawful good and when the party wasn't looking snapped the neck of the tavern keep to gain ownership of the tavern so he could use the secret tunnels underneath to run his own smugglers ring. I do agree with it cause we had a chaotic stupid fey warlock hexblade who almost killed my character multiple times because they couldn't get the hint that the puzzle was solved.

I think it's probably best practice to just build your character and think about the roles you want them to play in the group/story and let the alignment come naturally from there. Starting with alignment and building off of it can often (but not always) lead to stale and rigid characters.

My favorite character ever was LE. He was a fill in for a character that died early-mid campaign and was a straight up mercenary hired by the king to ensure that the 'Heroes' were sticking to the script of supporting his power plays with the neighboring counties. After a few sessions, the party had started planning to do many very naughty things, and as such, the response they received from an LE merc straightened them out right fast. "Good plan, but if you really want to burn out the cultists, we need to ensure proper air flow into the mines. use your spells to open up tiny shafts and then pump cloud kills and poison smoke into the main shaft, then collapse the exits." "Oh, good idea with taking out the foreign saboteurs, but why are we just going to let this chance at a good frame job go to waste? Animate that corpse, Then I'll put on that other ones outfit, and lets go get our neighbor in on this war.... Well it is one now that they are trying to kill the king, so lets make it 2v1 instead. Beside, the our soon to be allies pay well for adventurers right? We can double up and earn twice the pay" "Hey Leader, I love tha plan you have for these POWs, and I think you are making the right choice. You be good cop, and only burn them when they lie, I'll be bad cop, and burn them for fun! I think you will make a great Blackguard some day, just gotta take that last step from the old 'Boss', and the first step towards a new one, eh" Never did see a bunch of murder-hobos straighten up and fly right so fast as when my Merc started agreeing with them. DM even let me 'turn evil' at the end when the BBEG offered to buy my contract once the king was dead. I was balanced into the encounter and everything.

But this might only apply to the early versions of the Myers-Briggs type indicator. After the Myers-Briggs company took over maintenance they revised the instrument multiple times, and have provided scientific reports based around it crediting the reliability of the instrument. That could of course all be biased, but at the same time most research debunking the Myers-Briggs instrument is rather old, so it's hard to tell what still applies. Also, when using it next, try using a Jungian perspective ( www.teamtechnology.co.uk/myers-briggs-criticisms.html ) which can solve some of the criticisms leveled against the instrument (while also explaining other criticisms, the main part I'm pointing at is Criticism 5). I had to argue about alligments with 2 people, both of whom were really against it, like it's an enemy or something, and in neither cases did I understand their standpoint. For me it's farly simply a projection of a characters personality and actions in the setting and group. Obviously it's subjective, altough it's weird when the chaotic good cleric tries to argue that the idea of threathening a city's underworld boss for money or he (and in extension us as a group) would let giants siege and capture the city and destroy them, namely the same city in which the same cleric has an orphanage fits as a chaotic good act, because he was just bluffing.... So what I'm trying to say is that just because your character has evil actions it doesn't mean that's a bad action, so being mad about the alligment isn't too useful on the long run. Except if you are a cleric or paladin. In which case your character CHOSE to serve tenets and dogmas, so everything outside of that alligment is a character flaw. (Since the characters themselves took their class with the intent of pursuing that ideal). And characters should have flaws, but when the player thinks that destroying half a village just because a peasant short-changed him with money FITS being good, then that's not okey, lol.

@@Limrasson In my experience a lot of people just feel like it puts them too much in a box. Now, personally I kind of lean towards that being a good thing, because new players especially really struggle with nuanced characters, they just become bland and undefinable. But say you want to play a character who's very utilitarian, it's really fucking hard to argue that such a character would be "evil", because they are very much doing everything in their power to bring the best outcome to the most amount of people. Yet at the same time, it's hard to accept them as good too, if you're not a utilitarian yourself, because they just pushed a guy in-front of a trolley to keep it from killing those five other people. If you're with moderatley experienced players, and you want to play something like GoT, chuck away the alignments and just be careful about designing your moral codes. If you're with new players or you're more of a LoTR person, keep your alignments but dont lean too hard on them. That's my take.

@@DiddntFindANameLol As I said, I think it's the reverse. You can very easily use the aligments on GoT characters too. Or in real world for that matter. Like you figure "well my characters is an utilitarian, which puts him on neutral. But he stays from being too underhanded and tends to ignore the possibility of rewards if the reward has no key role. That puts him towards good. On the other hand he strongly opposes characters who act out of this mindset, which puts him towards lawful. Like this. The obvious exception being paladins and clerics where you have to figure out the code or god you serve. But that's a player choice as well. So don't understand the hate against the chart.

My lawful evil character is quite nice to everyone, but just goes ham when someone hurts her or another party member. And she's not a hired criminal or anything, she's pretty lonely actually, having crashed on sea and not knowing where her home is. Her main goal is taking out her revenge on the kraken that sunk her ship and taking its teeth or something as a trophy. The lawful aspect is obvious, and all the intense thoughts of revenge made me choose evil as best representing her. Note that I first made the personality, *then* chose the alignment that fit best. First choosing alignment and then cramming in a fitting personality is way too limiting. The character works out quite well, and it's nice to have a lawful tiefling, despite the PHB saying that they tend towards being chaotic.

The best way to create a character in DnD is with two questions: (1) What does your character want? (2) What are they willing to do to get it? By answering those two and basing all your character choices around those answers, you've got like 80% of your character work done. The other 20% is deciding whether those answers change throughout the game. This is literally just the alignment chart but actually tailored to your character. What they want is the Good-Evil scale, and what they are willing to do is the lawful-chaotic scale, except these questions allow you to actually determine personal motivations for your character.

The codes are kinda binding to keep playing their character and if the evil asshole does evil asshole things in front of the Paladin and he DOESN'T have some greater good he's needing to work with them for his only options are leave the party, arrest them, or kill them. The rogue would PROBABLY get more leeway then the warlock though because rogue evil is 'I pickpocket someone' to 'random murder', while warlock evil ranges from 'I'm serving a devil for my power and he is furthering his evil goals through me' to 'lol I burnt down the orphanage for the luls.'. 5e gives a bit more bredth to Paladin with no need to be Lawful Good and having a couple different oaths they can take that don't give a crap about other people being evil.....but in both versions if you are going to have Evil party members and a Paladin in the same group you need to talk this out and either work it out, agree that you don't mind interparty conflict in this adventure or that its part of the adventure, or one side needs to back down. You don't shove two non-functioning things together then blame only one of them, both are at fault for not working out this obvious problem before it even happened.

I would say, if you have players of opposite alignments who are going to find themselves trying to kill each other, really the only way to do it is to have a group talk about it and turn some of the characters into NPCs. An in-game spontaneous fight between players seems like a very definite route to a disaster. For a final battle a serious PVP like this could be really awesome (tough the DM must ensure it is balanced enough to be climactic and that no character suffers an insignificant death), but anything more would be really hard to run.

4:37 just wanted to say this is completely accurate. In my most recent campaign, I had to dissuade someone from playing the stereotypical Rogue (he was just going to slowly kill the party because "lol I'm so random! :p" and instead asked him "what do you think a LAWFUL ____ rogue would be like?" We eventually came up with an adequate background, and we have a Lawful Neutral, professional Rogue who's sole specialty is... Lock Picking! (He's got a fuggin +9 on lockpicking checks and he's only level 5 ;-;). He came from a rough childhood, where his friends taught him how to rob and steal, but he always hated it, but only did it because, well, he was going to starve to death. After being kicked out of his home, he decided to do the only thing he knew how to, lockpick! BUT! He's an ethical lock picker! He goes to company's and banks, picks their vaults, and tells them all the faults of their systems. He sneaks in, opens the vault, leaves it open with a note saying "You might want to update your system. If you want some advice or a consultation, please refer to '______'. I'm currently staying at the Flying Crane (Tavern)." Being a lawful neutral rogue, he's willing to open locks, but not steal. Willing to jump in and be a good Samaritan, but refuses to kill. If the opponent does die somehow though, he feels nothing for the death, just disappointment at his lack of being able to calmly subdue the man. The character has had some "growing up" to do in the campaign as the rest of the party is either chaotic neutral, neutral evil, or just plain chaotic evil. Being the only lawful character in the group, he's had a tough time fitting in, and the rest of the crew basically more or less are just using him for picking locks, and essentially treating him like a tool. The party dynamic is also really interesting in how it's been put forth. I like it thus far, just wish the rest of the party weren't such... murder hobos...

Lawful is the one I see the most disagreement about Most useful interpretation I think is Lawful = principled / has principles they adhere to, making them more predictable in some ways. Chaotic has no constraints and goes with the flow. Good vs. Evil can just be Kindness/Selflessness vs. Generally Agreed Upon As Detrimental Selfishness (sadistic schadenfreude included only on a personality specific basis) True Neutral would entail being able to make dynamic exceptions on your principles as needed, relegating them to guidelines, while being self-serving and other-serving in equal measure

Awesome summary.
@erockandroll393 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if principle is the right word. One may have a principle to only steal from the rich and give to the poor. (A classically chaotic good act.) I mostly associate lawfulness with honesty. That they treat a gentleman's agreement like a formal contract. Chaotic people would rather not be tied down by such commitments.
@baitposter3 жыл бұрын
@@erockandroll39 _(final clarity/conveyance edit, for real this time)_ That's a fine criterion to tack on, esp. for Lawful Good characters, though I think I can see a Lawful Evil character being fairly dishonest, such as in contract wording or technically correct deceptions (which are dishonest), while still consistent and predictable in how they operate and adhere to their own code of conduct or an intricate philosophy. Meanwhile, the chaotic operate predominantly on whim and whimsy.
@baitposter3 жыл бұрын
@@erockandroll39 You did get me thinking on this again anew, though, and I think we just need a new pair of alignment scales altogether. Perhaps a Y axis based on _presentation/appearance_ of character (e.g. light vs. dark), and an X axis of Stability-Volatility. (e.g. A stable light-presenting character could still be quite evil, but outwardly, you could assume they look like a paragon of what's good and holy, without giving away their actual personality. Like games with uncaring apathetic angels) Alignment detection spells should just be relegated to determining whether someone intends harm to your party or not, contextually based on what the party considers harm (e.g. injury, theft, etc.)
@erockandroll393 жыл бұрын
@@baitposter I wouldn't try over thinking alignment. Especially when it doesn't have the same stake as it did in older editions. I'm inclined to believe the main determinant should be a character's core philosophy. In 3.5, they mention that while a dog may be loyal and a cat free spirited, they don't have the capacity to understand morals and ethics, and thus will always be true neutral. And I generally believe that characters will have pragmatic reasons to adopt those philosophies. (Good, because helping eachother means we all do better. Evil, if the best way to get ahead it to step on everyone else. Law, because honesty and honor gives you status. Chaos, if it's better to keep people guessing )

@Naoise0124 жыл бұрын
It is, the problem is a combination of characters not turning out to be what you intended and people trying to frame their acts in a certain way because they think alignment is subjective. Your alignment can and should change based on your actions and what you set it as in the beginning is just what you intend for the character.

So not wanting to kill undead makes me chaotic evil now. It's not like I literally devoted my life to charity and vowed to always help and heal those in need, even those who are evil. It's actually worse in context. First of all, the vampire was clearly a victim, no arms or legs, bleeding to death when we reached her, and had seemed to undergo some kind of trauma and torture from somebody we just killed. Second, the DM actually sided with me after the event, and was even taking my side while everyone was arguing with me by supporting things I was saying like "I never said that" or "Yeah, she's only a quarter vampire", and when the whole debacle was over, the DM said that I was in the right. He even said he was trying to get the team to help her, since she could help us in our quest. Third, WE HAVE A HALF ORC IN OUR PARTY! In one of the campaigns I ran a child disappeared and while the PCs were exploring a cave they met an important NPC who had been turned into a rat, who was supposed to give them clues as to how the child disappeared (the child had also been turned into a rat, as well as many of the villagers). One of my players was a druid who was purely driven by greed. He hated humans and the only reason he had for being in the town was an informant was supposed to meet him there to provide information about his deceased father's hidden riches. He was very excited to talk to the rat until he found out he used to be human, at which point he refused to listen to him. I gently pressed him into conversing with said NPC who described his role in the village as being a fisherman with a wife and baby girl who was the sole provider of one of the town's most important resources: river bass and other fish. This PC at first refused to help him, then admitted he would only do so if the man could pay him (which was impossible because not only was he a rat but he hadn't been at the fishery for a couple days so he would be behind in work orders). Eventually he finally conceded to helping the man... if the NPC would forget about his predicament, the town and his family for at least a day and assist the player as one of his pets, stripping him of all pride and dignity. Even after all of this my player wouldn't believe I considered his character to be an evil character.
