A recent UN report revealed that one in eight men in rural Bangladesh admit to having committed rape. Although it is a crime punishable by death, there are no accurate government figures for rape in Bangladesh, largely due to social stigma and a failure by local authorities to investigate alleged crimes.
VICE News correspondent Tania Rashid traveled to Sylhet and met with both perpetrators and victims of rape as well as local police to find out what is driving Bangladeshi men to rape and abuse women, and what steps the authorities are taking to put an end to it.

Her comment on class (wealth) reminds me of a social theory I read about, regarding women's choice of dress. The argument put forth was that women dress in a revealing manner in part to assert their social rank. A woman of high social rank can maintain high visibility while walking among the lowly classes, because nobody would dare touch her (she's protected). Think of a princess, the king's daughter, as _the_ ideal example. A poor woman on the other hand, especially one without a husband, has to maintain a low profile in public and always fear for her safety. Thus fashion could be seen as instinctive legacy of hierarchy negotiation. I'm not saying I fully buy that, but considering the important role fashion retains in modern society, it does make you think.

Dont forget those ridiculous high high heels, overly long nails, breast so big you wonder if their back is OK or not. it imply that they're priveleged enough not to work in labour or even have to fear for their life (taking away their mobility by wearing super ridiculous high heels and a breast and butt so big they pratically physically disabled)

This will never not make me sick. It's really horrible to think that the society shuns the victims to such an extent. I...really don't think I can put to words just how this makes me feel outside of that's just...fucking stupid. The worst part is its going to be a long....long...process that will take a long time before anything even remotely starts to change. It's something so ingrained in tradition and common practice-I really don't see it changing any time soon and that makes me just...ugh...

For non Islamist nations, there are really only 3 feasible options to take. 1: Do nothing and hope that they'll eventually progress as a society to a point where these sort of things aren't tolerated just like they aren't here, in the civilised world. Which is unlikely given how dogmatic their current society is. 2: Go on an old school crusade and wipe them off the face of the Earth so that the rest of the Planet may progress unhindered. Which is also unlikely to happen in this day and age. 3: Allow them grow to a point where they dominate every nation and plunge the planet back into the medieval ages where anything they consider heretical is destroyed (such as science).

Ecselsiour That's a very black & white point of view. Im not an expert on bangladeshi society, but my guess is, that its not religion or culture, but poverty and unregulated capitalism that's causing this dangerous, horrible situation for women. While rape may always have taken place in bangladeshi society (as in every society), I would guess that western capitalism has: 1.) softened strict cultural traditions preventing rape in bangladeshi society and 2.) introduced such unregulated capitalism, that the poor are left to rot with no support from the government meaning = the poorer you are, the less anybody gives a fuck about your rights. I'm pretty sure thats true for rape, but also for things like traffic casualties and murder victims. That's the impression I got from traveling in South Asia and watching this documentary. Not that that Islam or this specific culture carries the blame.

Linguistic tangent not related to the aim of the video: it's interesting to see English loan words pop up so regularly, for precisely the same reason and in the same context as many Latin (and French) words show up in English. In the case of England, a lot of legal custom came from the Roman experience and filtered through French-speaking nobility. In the case of Bangladesh and India, the English loan words are also frequently those dealing with jurisprudence and administration, due to the long era of British rule.

It’s the culture. I don’t know why it’s like that but a lot of times, they put the blame on the woman more than they do on the man. I watched the other video they had about this and they said stuff like “if the woman was fully veiled, the man wouldn’t have been attracted to her” and such. It might also be something to do with purity and such. Whatever it is, it’s sick.

So let me guess, with religion and the fact that these girls are forced to marry their rapist, it must have nothing to do with the fact in the Quran, it's a pretty damn important rule that two people are married if they are having sex(they go to hell if they aren't). Ya, no it must be some cultural and sociological issue as to why their society shuns someone who has had sex before marriage regardless if it's rape or not. Ya no this must not be influenced by religion in any way it's gotta be something else.

How is any of this motivated by islam? I understand the marrying your rapist part,; but has been carried out in Mid-East and Asia in pre-Islamic times. Even that is largely because, as a woman needs to depend on a man's income and no one marries the victim, the rapist is forced the responsibility of providing for the woman and her family. If there is any motivation for what urges men to rape, it is, like the lady said, poverty, class structure, a lack of understanding of Islam (Islam is brutal on rapists and oppressors) and the wild sexual urges of men.
