I can honestly say it never occurred to me to go in cruise control when towing. But then, when you're hauling horses, it's a bit different. Interesting. Glad you made it home safe, and so glad we got some good camping time!

I only use cruise control for short periods to stretch my legs. So yeah, this isn't a real issue, just a mind bender. I sure enjoyed our time together. I hope we can do it again.

Just Subscribed. Just did this on my ,2004 Cadillac Escalade ext. . No Tow light was on. I turned on the Tow package then turned off and set the cruise problem fixed. Thanks for the Video.

Eric's shop is close to where we camp and he had a couple of cancellations so he had to time to check it out. Too bad I didn't think about the tow mode being off when he in the truck. It would have been fun to see what he could find out. But no matter, we had a good time.

I have a 2003 Silverado 1500 that i can't get the cruise control to work on. I even replaced the entire turn signal switch unit that the cruise control is located on.

It's an aggravating process because there are so many possibilities. Even the brake switch can be causing the issue.

Got a cousin that has an 05 Chevy 1500 and when you're going up a hill and cruise control it'll rev up till about 4500 unless you have Tow and haul mode on but that was just in a small town we haven't tried it on the big road chip

The first step in a repair is to be a good witness, notice variables that influence the situation. I agree, a board or software issue seems most likely. You'll want to look for codes when you get home, the PCM may see it from a better angle.

No codes have ever been displayed for this event, however, Eric has giving me some direction and I spent some time today researching possible updates to the engine computer that might address this issue. Nothing so far but never-the-less, I'm learning so that's a good thing. I appreciate your comment and suggestions.

Oh how I hate "magic box" problems! Imagine hearing the word "reflash" back in 1980? Had a different meaning then! HAHAHA! That is a strange one there, for sure. Those types of problems get me all fired up, especially on my own vehicles. How the heck can tow/haul affect cruise? Yep ... the magic box! Congrats on the 400 subs! That's great! It's looking like a software problem because all the modes of the cruise control work if you don't use the tow mode, or if you use the tow mode the cruise control "on" button has to be shut off before shutting off the ignition. I'm looking at the latest update for the truck now but it's all Greek to me.

Yeah, sounds that way to me. I've got a long way to go before I have programming capabilities. Need a laptop for starters, then the J-box. Hopefully my '07 Silverado can get by without any updates until then. Been driving around for a year with a "rejected" sticker, since the monitors won't run for whatever reason. Truck runs fine, so I'm not going to worry about it right now. She becomes exempt from emissions in 2022 - will be a great day for me! :)

I have a 02 silverado 1500 and at first it would intermittently engage and disengage. Now cruise control light dont come on nor does it engage. Im learning there are a few different things that can be wrong but not sure how i go about troubleshooting for correct part to replace. You are correct, many things can affect the cruise control circuit. That's why I will start by saying "you have to get a wiring diagram". Once you have a wiring diagram you can determine where the power is coming from and where the circuit is grounded. Wiring diagrams can be confusing but start with the basics. It the fuse okay? Is there a relay in the circuit that can be checked? Since it started as an intermittent problem, I'd check for loose connections or a bad grounding point. Even the brake switch can affect the cruise control circuit. Are your brake lights and signal lights all working as they should? As an example of how I would go about checking things, is find the wire that provides power to the cruise control switch. If you have power to the switch and no power comes out of the switch when the switch is turned on, then you have a bad switch. But remember the switch has to be grounded at some point as well so make sure both power and grounds are intact.

Did you add LED lights anywhere? You might need to install some inline resistors to those bulbs.

When it won't engage try putting your toe under the brake pedal and lifting up then try engaging cruise again. We had that happen on one of our Chevys, it needed a new switch.

Tow/Haul is designed to be most effective when the vehicle and trailer combined weight is at least 75 percent of the vehicle's Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR). Here in Texas we have Hills and overpasses. I am a chevy guy. I dog the heck out of mine. Overloaded And Hammered Down.. Tow mode is for Getting up to speed when loaded. Once I am up to speed I will shut Tow Mode off, So That I can Get the 6th gear and the cruise will work. Big downgrade, or Uphill I will Just kick it back on.. have a safe run.. keep the rubber side down...

All my vehicles have human cruise control it's called a right foot, lol. Have always thought that one day I will get a vehicle with that fancy cruise control but then I thought it is just another thing to go wrong so right foot it will stay. Had a similar problem with that on my '04 Duramax. Indeed replaced brake switch and other things. Found out it was the driver issue. Very glitchy. Did a update on the software on the ecm, it got solved. It now works on tow mode on or off.

That's great news that you found the issue. I've looked into the wiring schematics for the cruise control and the tow mode and the only common place both circuits share is the "logic" in the instrument panel cluster and of course the ECM. Thanks for the comment, it helps.

I'm still interested in your problem :) I don't know if you know, between 98 to 06 Duramax, corvette, z71, not sure of other vehicles, had a instrument cluster problems, being the chips going bad, stepper motors etc? Where you have to tap them to get them working. I had to repair my cluster with new chips, stepper motors etc. While I had that done. I had them put new blue LED bulbs in the cluster. :) Thought I'd share the info.

That's quite the wild and crazy crowd you were hanging out with up there. I would have guessed it would have been something that GM put in the software specifically for the tow mode. Just like back in the day when overdrive transmissions came out. You weren't supposed to tow anything in overdrive, just the drive gear. So now short of a flash on a control module you're stuck with it working that way. Interesting...

Hard Knocks Forge I'm thinking the same thing. The manufacturer suggests not to use the cruise control with tow mode on, yet it will engage if it is shut off before shutting off the ignition. That's the strange part.

It's really not an issue as I know what to do, but since entering the world of auto diagnostics it has become an interesting case. I may never get to the point of figuring it out but the research brings me to other learning points so it's all good.

He came straight from work to hang out with us. He's a cool guy. I had a scanner hooked up while I did this video. I didn't show it to keep the video short but yeah, no real help. The scanner showed every input as expected to include the failure of the cruise control to engage with the tow mode on. But thanks for the idea on the brake switch.

Hanging out with good people was indeed well worth the trip. The cruise control works if I make sure I shut it off before shutting off the engine. Or, leave the tow mode off, it works that was as well. Strange but small issue. I'll live with it until I have a reason to reflash the engine computer. That might be all it needs.
