After collecting most of the dash instruments for the boat-tail speedster, I'm able to lay out and machine the dashboard to fit them in. I also put in the extra effort to jewel, aka engine turn the entire dash.

What a superb job of engine turning. You have remarkable patience. As far as the clock goes, watch a few watch or clock videos before you mess with it. Understanding even a little bit will help you to service it. Also, DON'T be tempted to flood it with oil, or worse still WD-40. It may well have a watch-like movement that only needs tiny drops of oil in critical areas.
@BIGWIGGLE223
@BIGWIGGLE223 Жыл бұрын
I 100% agree!! It may look like a dash clock and may give you thoughts of simple, but I promise that that is gonna be as complicated as a pocket watch and there's all kinds of horror stories about people destroying family heirlooms because they thought they understood enough to go digging through it. And as far as oiling it goes, just like precision metrology instruments, which is literally an extension of precision watchmaking, you should only put oil where oil goes. And these locations are marked by a through hole that has a small divot like cup meant to hold a single drop of oil that would come off the tip of a sharp needle. That is all. And before you wind it up any more at all it needs to be gone through by someone who knows watch repair. It looks like a legit antique Bugatti or equivalent dash clock and I know that those were made by top swiss watchmakers back then. If it was just some mass produced dash clock I'd say tear into it and try to get it going yourself and just learn from it, but not on something that may have you kicking yourself if you can't get it back into working order

My uncle raced those huge sprint cars, seemed much taller than I was at the time. Folks and I visited with him and grandma when I must have been 7-8. Half bro came over to jewel the dash of his Studebaker Hawk using uncle's barn machine shop. Bro used something like a half inch diam. pink eraser from what I recall from 60+ years ago. I was quite fascinated by the whole process. You did quite an impressive bit of detailing yourself. Thanks for sharing and BTW I subscribed to your channel.

In watchmaking that pattern is called pearlage. Speaking of watchmaking, you should have a watchmaker take that clock apart. Usually you need to strip off the old oil to be able to add new oil. Not to mention almost all watchmakers have moved to synthetic oils for watches these days.

Just more stunning work. You mentioned oiling the clock to get it to go. Clocks need special oil, easily available but the best thing would be to strip and clean the clock, which for a man of your talents should not be too difficult. The oil will be turning to varnish in the pivot bearings and you need to use some wood and solvent to get the old oil out. I am thinking that a clock of the Jager Le Coutre will probably not be worn but I would replace the spring if you can get the correct size because the old spring may be a bit set and modern springs are much better.

Absolutely love what you have achieved. The body work is turning out amazing. I drove British vintage sports cars for years, most of which had aero-screens and what really finished them off was to a fairing bellow the glass. In some cars this was nothing more than a nice piece of polished timber shaped to fit the body contours, and on others like early Jags and MG's (you get the idea) they were hand shaped light alloy. I bet there are plenty of photo's about. 👍

Looks great! Thanks for the tip about the abrasive things. Not right for my car but handy to know. My mentor always told me off if I said dashboard when I was walking about the 'instrument panel' on pre-war cars. Proper chronometric tachos are hard to find and expensive. If that is a proper, period Delage face on your chronometric speedo that is worth money to someone. I am working on a little circuit to read off a spark plug wire to drive a modern tacho that I can modify to look suitably pre-war and emulate a chronometric tacho to some degree. But you can't easily replicate that clockwork look the real ones have in electronics with modern tachometer mechanisms. The other incredibly useful instrument is the ignition light. That tells you the state of the battery and the charging circuit (generator or alternator) in a simple way if you understand how it works.
@Birashanuman
@Birashanuman 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely ! I cringed when I saw him apply the electric drill drive to the pukka Delage instrument ,and could only imagine what Delage owbners were thinking . It was so out of character . When I had my SSK replica built in the 90's (on a mid 30's 8cyl chassis),I had replica instrumentation made , including Jeger tacho,though I finally managed to source a genuine Bosch ignition switch, ex period Alfa 8C ,or perhaps Bentley 8 litre , .Proper Bosch headlights, also common to to the 8C, and bull horns were eventually sourced . I would hope the epnonymously branded Delage instrument finds its way into more appreciative appropriate hands . PS: I follow your channel too
@asciimation
@asciimation 2 жыл бұрын
@@Birashanuman I am not sure it's a proper Delage gauge? It is a proper chronometric mechanism definitely but someone has put the wrong face on it? He mentions that in the video. The face seems to be missing the two little screws that hold that on as well as it being a clockwise mechanism but an anti clockwise face! It is an interesting bezel on it too. That ribbed aluminium kind was used on higher end cars I think. Also I think the right angle drives are hard to find so that's nice to have. Smiths in the UK bought the UK Jaeger company in 1927. I have come across other bitser type gauges before. Often sold with the sellers saying "no way to test". Finding absolutely correct period instruments is really hard and some of the prices now are insane.
