From memory operations started in 2003 and the reasons why they stop in Australia is because the aircraft don't have the range for an economical DXB-AKL. Also EK want evening departures from Australia and the flights arrive in the morning so rather than have them sitting on the ground in Australia they make the short return trip across the Tasman and make it back for the departure time to Dubai! Hope this helps!

I think their first route to Australia was Melbourne in '98 but that is open to be corrected, as to the reason, I don't think there was any specific factor other than to add another destination and continent to the route map!
