A day in a small Finnish town

A day in the life of a retired expat in Finland. Today I am Perniö, a small town in southwest Finland. I own a small studio in Perniö. It is a place for friends and family to stay if they want some peace and quite near the Finnish countryside. I also stay here every couple weeks for a change of scenery.

@4:08 I noticed you had your washing machine drain hose snaking down the shower drain. I'm sure that was just a temporary setup, but in case you didn't know, that unused spout looking thing poking out of the wall next to the washing machine is a drain inlet. You can attach the drain hose to it with a simple hose clamp.

@KalleKilponen thanks for letting me know! I have been wondering what that was for. The sauna is on the other side of the wall and I thought it was somehow related to the sauna. I have been running the hose into the shower drain all this time. I am so glad you advised me.

You chairs can take winter temperatures, if you just protect them from snow and water. That's the usual advice for that material. Humidity in the air isn't a problem but water can be.

i can only dry my laundry outside during to really warm sunny day because lake 200 meter south of my apartment smells really strong sulphur when there is mist and that smell get stuck in clothes. you don't even have to see mist, you smell it.

@Gibbetoo that's a surprise. Finland has a image of pristine nature everywhere. Luckily, that has been my experience so far. 🌳

@@laterlife2931 at least 300 years agriculture, everything drained in the river that make a lake here, after that power plant that warms it for a few degree, overgrowth for weeds, phosphor, crap fish...

@@laterlife2931 i bet it is and things are getting better since powerplant isn't been washing their cooling waters donwstream for decade or two, we still smell it years back. they build that plant hurry at 90's depression as peat operated plant. plant only washed warm water and peat away.

​​@@laterlife2931 Paper mills, industrial towns, long history of agriculture. All this agricultural and industrial period has left it's mark. Many places have been cleaned and recovering, but still much is left.

So if I got this right, you have blocks of flats in two housing companies, where neither of them has laundry with professional equipment for their attendants to use. Seems like an unusual situation.

@just43tube you are right. They are both small buildings and everyone has their own washing machine.

@@laterlife2931 I have some experience of different house companies and about the possible challenges involved when there is a laundry facility by the company. Mostly it goes well and is really useful, but not always.

Hmm, now I am very interested. I thought maybe an apartment building (kerrostalo). A mansion or estate is much more interesting. I will add that hill to my walk the next time I am in Perniö. Thanks for letting me know.

@@laterlife2931 The main building was finished in 1830s it’s called ”Haarlan kartano” theres Wikipedia page for it but it lacks a lot of information. If i remember right my great grandmother used to work there as a maid.

The road on the other end next to the apartments lead there too. You can see the building somehow visibly too when driving in Perniöntie going to Tammisaari.

Nowadays it's privately owned, but I think it's safe to walk through there to the other end that leads to the apartments. If I remember correctly my great-grandmother used to work there as a maid. You can see it somehow visibly when driving on Salontie to Tammisaari after Perniön ABC.
