I prepped for writing assignments in school the same way: write down all the quotes I wanted to incorporate to elaborate, substantiate whatever argument I was making (in whichever section of the paper). And writing the bibliographic entries as I went.

Your videos always light the fire under my butt to strive for being able to be a full time writer. My day job already has me sitting in front of the computer for 8 mind numbing hours, and even having to consider writing before or after makes me want to just melt into a puddle of brain goo. Sometimes it feels so far off, and as such a small possibility, but watching your vlogs always keeps me inspired to keep striving for it.

I really like your research method. I used to take a lot of notes back when I was in university and I always ended up with more content than necessary. Editing it to reach the desired word/page limit was a task! And I totally get the reading multiple books on multiple mediums. I am currently between one physical book, one on my Kindle and listening to 2 audiobooks -one for my walks and the other while I'm doing chores! I really look forward to watching your vlogs. Happy reading and happy researching! :)

I never used to like the research part of writing - I always felt a bit overwhelmed and like there would be too much to know/too much I might get wrong. Now, though, I absolutely love it. It adds so much depth to creative writing and is just such an interesting process. Hope the rest of your reading and research goes well ☺️ this was such a cosy vlog, thanks for bringing us along!

I think I kind of wrote my college essays in the same way? I would write down quotes I found interesting from all the sources I had, then underneath them, write down what I thought about them. Then from there, I could kind of see where I was going with the essay, and I could pare down the quotes to just the ones that were useful to my argument, and I would write the rest of the essay around those quotes.

That note taking method is exactly how I used to do it at uni. It worked fine for undergraduate essays, but when I came to write my masters research thesis (which was 30,000 words), I ended up with a notes document which was over 100,000 words long, and it was frankly unmanageable. Partly because I had a bad habit of typing out every quote that I vaguely thought might be useful. In retrospect, advice for anyone using this method: be selective.
