Here it is friends: the new adventure we've been dreaming and saving for since we first met 8 years ago. We've always envisioned moving into the woods by the lake and building our dream tiny cabin as a home base for us to come back to in between our international travels. We cannot wait to have a place to call our own!! Now that we've lived remote for over a month we've established some daily routines we wanted to share with you all... but there really is nothing routine about living in a construction site with many different projects on the go 😝

How Did We Get Here?

After an incredible 3 years of living, working, and traveling in our self converted Sprinter Van we made the very tough decision to abandon it in Africa to take a rescue flight back to Canada. As it has for all of us this global pandemic has flipped our world upside down. When our Prime Minister announced that he was sending repatriation flights over to Africa to pick up Canadians who were stuck (due to border closures) we consulted with friends and family closest to us and realized that in this time of crisis we should be back in our home country. Halting our dream of driving around the world was a hard pill to swallow which is why we knew we needed a big project to keep our mind + body busy while social distancing back here in Toronto. Enter building an off-grid tiny house on wheels!! But after nearly 6 months, we realized that our dreams of continuing van life across North America in our new van build were not a current reality with the state of the world. So, we've found ourselves pursuing something we've dreamed of since we first got together 8 years ago... a cabin in the woods 😊

Hot tip: your skin will thank you. Put a dish with water on top of fireplace so moisture is released into the air will fire burns. Learned this from my grandpa who used to live full time in a tiny cabin. Love the video!

I love that you had that conversation. I was brought up Catholic and went to Catholic school from kindergarten to graduation. I no longer consider myself Christian, but I am spiritual. I used to question everything and take it literally. I was quite resentful. Today I respect whatever people believe. No more arguing and trying to make my point or opinion "the right one'. It’s a lovely name but very overused. As an alternative, how about “Serendipity” - an unplanned fortunate discovery. Very fitting to both buying a cabin because of covid and well the act of travelling and van-life generally. You never know what you’ll come across but if you have faith, a positive attitude and a spirit of adventure you are sure to come across many fortunate discoveries! Plus it includes “seren” that everyone loves.

Several of my ancestors are from a little town called "Traveler's Rest." I love the name, and I think it fittingly applies to your new home, where you and your traveler friends can rest together. It will not just name the cabin, but all your land and lake.

Okay... Hear me out... and I know this is long, but I think it'll be worth your time to read :) The name that I think yall should name your cabin is Hygge. Before thinking it's an odd name, listen to what it means... "Hygge" has origins in Denmark and Norway (where I would consider to be two of the most beautiful places on earth). It means happiness... but not just any form of happiness... it's the rare kind of joy and contentness that comes when everything just feels... right. It's the moments in life that are brimming with happiness, comfort, loved ones, favorite things and beautiful places. When everything fades away and you are simply in the present moment. All frustrations melt away and you feel content with life. Blankets and candlelight and movies. Lakeside views and laughter and bonfires and coffee and happiness. This name represents something that I'm sure yall hope to have lots of in this cabin. I think you both hope to have "hyggelig" moments in this cabin and on this land... to have moments where your soul is content and cozy. Hygge. 💛

There still are strict rules about social distancing and so on but it is still pretty chill. I grew up in Alaska and I love having a wood stove in the house even though we had a Toyo oil stove as well. It heats the place up so nicely and gets rid of moisture and the chill so quickly. Every house in the north needs a good quality wood stove.

My how the table has turned . I've been watching you guys for years and usually in warmer climate's as you traveled . I left Maine in November after doing a quick 1 month Van Build and here i am watching you work on your cabin in the cold , while i'm basking in 73 degree's here today in Sun City, Arizona ... I started watching your older videos when I went into lockdown and needed to get my travel fix. When you changed you vlog to more a cabin style then a van life I was nervous but ultimately I appreciate seeing you adapt to the new life we live in, make the most of it and thrive. I always look forward to Sunday’s and love seeing how the cabin is going. As you were "breaking" into the truck I noticed something unusual. That little air wedge you were using is EXACTLY what we use in the tow business to gain entry to locked vehicles. I'm dying to know how you happened to have a mini air wedge handy out there in the middle of nowhere ??! =P
