Hooooollllllaaaaaaaa Everyone!!!
Welcome to another video on my channel. I am Navjot Kaur, a graduate student at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. Continuing our conversations about life of PhD scholars on MyPhDLife, let's look at what a usual day in the life of a PhD scholar looks like? The routine I share is for the time when a student is in campus, actively working on her/his research projects :) As I share in the video, there's no one single routine that students follow and there are all kinds of schedules that students follow depending on what suits them the most! I hope this video gives you a closer look into lives of PhD scholars!
Go pursue your passion for SCIENCE and RESEARCH!
Don't forget to LIKE, SHARE and SUBSCRIBE! :)
Sending out lots of love and positive energy.

Hello mam. I have always heard that in return of the stipend you get, you have to work for professors, maybe take lectures in his place or something like that. Can you please elaborate what kind of errands are those??
@ThePseudoDoctor_NavjotKaur
@ThePseudoDoctor_NavjotKaur 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Himanshu, At least at IISc there's nothing like that. You are paid stipend as you do your coursework and then research. You have to do one mandatory TAship for one semester. Other than that if you do more, you are paid separately for that. Similarly no other reputed institue should have anything different. But this might be different if suh requirements are described at the beginning of your program, I think in cases of sponsored PhD or lecturership with PhD.

@ThePseudoDoctor_NavjotKaur
@ThePseudoDoctor_NavjotKaur 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Anjali, I don't think it should until the institute has some rule for minimum score in BSc. Since your entrance exam ranks are/will be good, and MSc score is also good these should dominate and get you your ticket to the interviews. All the very best 👍🙂

I am in my last semester. so i am pretty worried about the fact that this would decrease my chances of selection in the interview round of iisc due to my Not so good Cv.

@@anjaligupta6180 Hey Anjali, Many students are going through this phase. Many many students at IISc have not been able to consistently work on their research due to multiple lockdowns so professors understand this and have been going through the same. You make sure you prepare your subjects well, understand concepts from your field, and perform really well in entrance exams. If you ensure this, I am sure you will have a very good chance of fulfilling your dream 🙂

@ThePseudoDoctor_NavjotKaur
@ThePseudoDoctor_NavjotKaur 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Akshaya, Including my school and tuition/coaching classes hours I think it was close to 10hours. I was ofcourse not studying all the 10 hours though i would say 8hours of focussed studying at that time. It all depends on your grasping abilities and prior background, I knew people who studied much less and did better so there's no one golden number! Being honest and devoted to goals one is after is one of the best ways to stay self-motivated and hence productive. Have short term goals chalked out, plan your activities accordingly, revisit your plans regularly to keep a check in your progress and make sure to have fun along the way 🙂

@ThePseudoDoctor_NavjotKaur
@ThePseudoDoctor_NavjotKaur 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Arnav! I do not agree with this statement. My PhD advisor was never like that and I know many others who are not. But unfortunately there are also some who are like that and it becomes very tough for students stuck in such situations. What I have found is that the students need to show independence and take charge of their PhD. If you want to participate in sports or extracurricular, please go ahead and do and find the right way to communicate this to your advisor. Also, VERY VERY IMPORTANT, it is always known in the community (research group, department, institute) that who are the professors infamous for such interfering behaviour, so do not join their research group to start with 😊

Hi Bidya, There are different rules and eligibility requirements for teaching in different types of institutes. Many mandate a PhD and postdoc, like IITs and IISc, while many other govt and private institutes allow teaching along with pursuing a part time PhD. So you will first have to figure out where do you want to be with your teaching and PhD and what do you eventually want to do with the experience and degree you gain.

@ThePseudoDoctor_NavjotKaur
@ThePseudoDoctor_NavjotKaur 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jyoteesh, Different universities have different versions/rules for part-time PhD. In Full time, the candidate is expected to only focus on the PhD research and cannot have any other job. She/he will be paid through the scholarship program they came through e.g. GATE, CSIR etc. and there will be a set of rules described for their graduation like when to complete comprehensive exam, criteria for graduation etc. In part-time PhD people can have a job and side by side do a PhD. So they can be paid for their job and continue education. Again the company one I working at and the university you enroll at will have their own set of rules for this. Another thing is sponsored PhD where the company one is working at sponsor your PhD and the research problem then chosen is something that the company is interested in. This usually happens when profs have collaborations with particular companies. I suggest you to watch this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKWuqIynf9-ckKM And other general videos about PhD program in my channel to get more details on full time PhD. Hope thi was helpful and good luck for your future plans 🙂

Hi Suparna, The questions asked in PhD interview are from subjects of your field, from any past research or project works you might have done and at times things to test your common sense and basic understanding of principles you have studied in the past. Profs try to see what is you problem solving approach and how good you are at understanding and implement the material you have studied. There are no short cuts here, you have to be thorough in your preparation, understand not mug up your subjects, have some level.of creativity and imagination to solve problems and whenever you don't know the answer the ability accept that and show interest in learning more.
