Hi Faye! I think this kind of struggle at the end of the video is such a thing for many of us. How our generations realise about the academic culture we reject to join, how we don't want our jobs to be our full identity, to explore more things in life etc. I would say (since I understood this from your vid) if you really want to study medicine and be a doctor (as a profession) do it. You can always find the path to be the kind of doctor you want to be, you can find other ways to practise medicine (maybe not in a hospital, but as e.g. Uché Blackstock did for her community), in summary: you can always create your way into the medical world and be the change. Best of luck to you and Merry Christmas!

Personally, I think that the doctors I know are too closed off. They make me feel guilty and ashamed for being sick. I would love to have a doctor that you actually talk with and that becomes vulnerable as you do. So that it doesn´t feel one-sided. Faye you are such a lovely being, you don´t have to fit the mold to be a good doctor. Just be yourself and reinvent what it means to be a doctor on your own terms!

If you want to be a doctor, become a doctor. Ignore the culture, it will evolve - definitely if strong women that have a personality apart from being ‘a doctor’ get ahead in the career paths! Coming from a doctor that finds your channel refreshing ;).

you would be an incredible doctor, but there are also so many other options. you're really smart and a genuinely lovely person, and no matter if you continue with medicine or change your mind you will be amazing. it's never too late to pick something else, and people will support you either way. do what is going to make you the happiest, and know that what will do that might change many times, and that it's completely fine. i love your videos, have a wonderful Christmas 🥰🎄

hi, what you said about medicine culture near the end really resonated with me. I'm very queer; I have tattoos and piercings and such; I am a person of colour - I know what people of colour go through in the healthcare profession, I have heard horror stories about racism and reports to the GMC etc. As for gay doctors who actually are camp and very visible, it feels like we are non existent. I mean I know that the head of tropical medicine at Barts has purple hair and is very butch. I think that's the only example I can think of. Aside from that, I am very outspoken and 'high energy' which has led to people telling me that I seem too energetic to be a medical student ('energetic'. I simply have adhd (!)). Well speaking of ADHD, I have struggled really hard with my neurodivergence and it is very alienating because I do not think the same way as most of my peers, and I handle work differently. I haven't found people like me in my med cohort; but what my friends say is that they want to see more doctors who are like me in the profession. They've all said that they would feel so much more comfortable if there was a doctor who looked like me, that they would be far happier to disclose information to me, and that I shouldn't give up just because there's a couple rude consultants and patients that might write me up. That information has kept me going; it's the main reason I haven't dropped out yet (i'm in first year. I'm sure I will have lots more reasons down the line.). I think what's not pressed on often enough is that doctors NEED to be diverse; not just in race, class, sexuality and gender, but personality! We cannot all mould into a single box. We are all people and we should be as diverse as the population!

Faye, my opinion is that we aren't gonna enjoy or like every part of our job or what is expected of us at a particular job. But we mould (still keeping our core values intact) accordingly because passion/goal with which we came is bigger than anything, for you it is helping people and learning science. Also times are changing, stereotypes are being broken, it is nobody's business what you wear, you can be the pivot other women in your field are hoping for and make it better for generations to come. And you have it in you, proof being this channel, a KZbinr and a med student. All the best.

i feel like people are attempting to come around the idea that professionals have a life outside of work. youtube doctors like dr mike or mama doctor jones do a great thing in showing that. sure they are medical professionals, but they're human beings like the rest of us with a family and a personality and you shouldn't let that aspect of the profession steer you away from it. you're doing great, faye. keep at it!

Unless you work for yourself or have a very cool employer, I think you do give up a part of who you are to 'fit' into what that employer or profession needs. I wasn't ready to do this when I finished uni, I left what I thought was my dream job and just lived for a while, travelled the world, lived in another country for a year etc. At 28 I came back at home and felt I was ready to start a career. The opportunities in the medical field are so vast, I'm sure there is a place for you :)

Last time I commented, it was on of Faye's early videos of being a medical student but normalising having fun and taking time to have a life - that really helped me realise yes, I can have time to myself *without* feeling guilty. Even in this video, she remains talking her thoughts outloud, something that is SO feared in the medical culture. Also, can we just appreciate, youtube has connected these 4 literal bosswomen, they're cheering eachother on, publicly pushing eachothers careers forward, none of that catty business that many media streams like to create for entertainment, just a pure good bunch - Go Little Rockstars! xx

Maybe gaining a bigger audience and earning more from social media changes your view of medicine just like Ali's? Like, it's not demanded you do that for a job so you can as well give it up for something that is more enjoyable and more selfish than altruistic. It's a hard pill to swallow but I think doing what feels best for you IS best. 🤷‍♀️ People who need to work in medicine or who love it more than you will continue to do it. And it's somewhat sad but true that NHS didn't lose anything because -your place- will get replaced fast 😬

Omg yes the part about medical expectations is just too much, I’m a forth year medical student too and I’ve seriously been doubting my decision of becoming a doctor for months now. I feel like as a doctor you’re expected to act in a way that really throws off the real you, it’s like we all have to act in the same robotic way and since I’ve realized that it’s made me really depressed I don’t think I’m ready to forget who I am or to change myself for medicine so I understand you Faye and it is an unfortunately sad inevitable realization that you kind of come to someway along the road of being a medic but I really hope these toxic expectations change in the near future.

Hey Nora! It’s really reassuring to know I’m not just being dramatic and others can empathise but I’ve read a few comments about how it’s important for us to carry on so we can change the culture ourselves. Keep going because I’m sure you’ll make an incredible doctor and we can become the change we want to see when we get there ❤️❤️

As a junior doctor, I think your idea of doctors and their personalities might be warped by the people you're currently surrounded by at your hospitals perhaps? The majority of doctors I've met are very personable, chilled, down to earth and definitely not always super professional, even with patients! There's definitely scope to be a more personable doctor in medicine, we're not all uptight haha but also I think there is a lot less pressure to be a perfect doctor nowadays which is such a relief. Having a great personality is what is needed in a good doctor! x

im in med school and everyone lectures me about professionalism. Whenever I think about that word, I think back to the time I was sat on the bus and this man asked me to hold his gin and tonic for him while he tied his shoelaces. We had a chat and then i discovered he was a junior doctor, and quite tipsy. it was 2pm. Now the SJT would have hung drawn and quartered him but my opinion was that he was just a british lad day drinking , and it is what it is. I don't like british alcohol culture. but there you are. at least it wasnt the ward.
