Bleaching montiporas can be a result of a magnesium swing. Remember SPS corals can be reacting from something happened months ago. So although you haven’t had anything happen recently you may have had something mess up sometime ago. Stay the path and do not over react.

If all your parameters are within normal limits, maybe some fish or other corals(mainly soft) release something organic into the tank and some corals are fine but some can't tolerate it. I know you don't do any filtration but run some purit or carbon. If you saw their tissue peeling off, may have been RTN.

When you set up the light did you go off of manufacture recomendations? Rent a par meter and check the tank, you might have hot spots. Bleaching is mainly a light issue.

But why would it happen after about 9 months? The corals were growing fast, looking good.. and all of a sudden started bleaching. All over the tank, not in one specific spot. Thanks! :)

@@DannysAquariums , Oh, I see, that is strange. when they started growing they take up more elements, If everything is the same, the elements drop and can cause them stress when it gets low, then the light will be too much because they are weak. I have a 25G mix reef packed with coral, I noticed my sps that was starting to loose color all the other soft corals where thriving,except my hard corals,(did not change the light settings) turns out they where sucking up all the cal and mg, once I started adding Kalkwasser, and Cal/Mag they came back and started growing even faster, now I have to dose ALOT to keep the tank parameters normal. If you only use sea water that might be a problem. In the ocean these corals live deep under the water, not like in our aquariums, that light is only inches from the surface, when they start growing under perfect conditions they get spoiled and need need need...lol I bet your icp test will come back low. Reefing ifs fustrating but fun. Hope you figure it out, I really enjoy watching your videos. I watch them on the weakends in the morning with coffee and love the music you play, very relaxing.

alk and ph. keeps sps happy.. calcium and other stuff helps them grow. You can have sps that doesnt grow much due to low calcium / nutrients.. but stuff goes bad and dies with poor alk/ph parameters.

Regarding the bleaching: what are your nitrates? Where do you keep your alkalinity and how often do you test to make sure it is stable? Anything new added to the tank or new products used in the last month? Sps tend to react a week or two after an issue…
@DannysAquariums
@DannysAquariums 2 жыл бұрын
Never test, unless something seems off.. like now. I don’t want to chase numbers too much. Nitrates were at 0 as well as phosphates, I tested this after they started bleaching. I immediately started dosing nitrates and phosphates (for a month now). Alkalinity is around 8.0 I believe.
@tylerjaax4917
@tylerjaax4917 2 жыл бұрын
How do you know how much to dose (why are you dosing?) to maintain stable alkalinity? Bleaching like this is usually due to swings in alkalinity or low nutrients for me in the past. A combination of low nutrients and alkalinity swings can really take a toll on SPS. I test alkalinity at least every 2-3 days after I already have my dosing schedule locked in. Tested daily before that to make sure it was stable and locked in dosing schedule. Alkalinity is the most important element to keep stable IMHO.
@DannysAquariums
@DannysAquariums 2 жыл бұрын
I’m following the ‘average’ dosing schedule provided by Aquaforest on it’s packaging. I’ve been dosing the same for over 9 months now. The tank has been setup for over 15.
@tylerjaax4917
@tylerjaax4917 2 жыл бұрын
Just my 2cents being successful with sps for a while, but I wouldn’t recommend following any dosing schedule without testing Alk. Those are just a baseline from the manufacturer. Every tank is different. If alkalinity even goes up or down a single point and back to your regular levels between when you are testing, some sps wont like it and it will show. LPS and Soft corals won’t really be phased. Also recommend regularly testing N03 and P04 so they don’t bottom out.
@martijnvanbeek4387
@martijnvanbeek4387 2 жыл бұрын
@@DannysAquariums As your tank matures and mostly due to coral growth, you need to adapt your dosing schedule. Hence the need for testing. Please make it a habit for the future!?

I love your videos but in regards to the seahorses, maybe pass since you don't like to test often? they're incredibly sensitive to changes in the water and are high maintenance, but if that's something you're aware of and are willing to deal with, then it would be cool to see the little guys :)

Hey, I'm not the guy you asked but I thought I could help you a little without recommending anything crazy. Urchins will eat dino, before adding snails I would check the type of dino you have against an online pest algae id. If you don't have the toxic one, turbo snails or ninja star snails are big eaters. Also maintain the with a siphon, it's easy to attach a filter sock to a bucket handle or your sump and filter the water through the sock to not need to change it after cleaning. Hope this helps!

@@DannysAquariums In order for you to combat your dinos you need to raise your levels of nitrates and phosphates and keep them up so they are at least measurable (but you need to measure to be sure it is measurable;). Adding some UV might help as well together with a dark period for 3-4 days. Do this together as much as possible.
