Hi buddy, I got so many questions after watching this 😂 why is there no filtration? Not needed? How do you maintain the water quality? Do you need to refresh? And what is the set up price of something like this. I really like it
@DannysAquariums3 жыл бұрын
Hi man! Haha I hope I can answer them for you. There’s no filtration on this tank because I do weekly water changes of about 10%, I believe this little ecosystem can do a great job balancing everything by itself. I can’t give you exact numbers on the set up price but I believe it’s around € 1000,- excluding corals. You’re Dutch, right? Send me a DM on Instagram so I can send you some links of things I used for the tank. Thank you! 😁😉

I saw a neat trick recently for clams - get some reef putty, make a flat disc and then press the bottom of the clam into it. Then take the clam out and let the putty harden. Once dry, you can then use the putty as a "stand" that you bury in the sand for the clam, which will keep it steady and also prevent big bristle worms from eating it from underneath :)

I had good luck with small wrasse eating pests like flatworms. I had a yellow wrasse that left my shrimp and coral alone, but ate most of the pests. It and my cleaner shrimp would both try to clean my hands when I was tending to the tank. I haven't kept an aquarium in a long time though...probably over a decade. Your tanks are so gorgeous, and motivated me to start a little pico that's been up and stable for a couple months now, just waiting to be stocked with, hopefully, some zoas, 2-3 sexy anemone shrimp, and possibly a green clown goby.

You need some sort of surface skimming. That film on the surface traps the nitrogen gasses and prevents good gas exchange between the water and air. The fact you also don’t have a skimmer means there’s no air getting into the water. That’s going to keep your pH low. There’s a bad LFS in my town that always has that film on the surface and that one tank crashes every summer when it gets warm. Sometimes multiple times a summer

Next time dip dip dip your corals and shake then really good in the dip. You shouldnt be having flat worms this early unless you made mistakes. You also need way more surface agitation. You have too much surface film. I recomend getting a koralia pump or something so you can aim it up at the surface. Those mp40s or other pumps people use are good for flow.. but they cant be aimed at the top of the tank
@DannysAquariums3 жыл бұрын
I dipped all the corals in this tank before I added them to the tank. So either some survived the dip or something else caused this. I use natural seawater, maybe there were some in the water already? I'm working on the surface film.

I made a reef tank out of a 20 gallon "Show" tank 16.5 tall x 12 wide x 24 long. I actually put an under gravel filter on it run by two pumps that I aimed one across the back of the rock and the other at the front of the tank creating a vortex effect along with the 2 gallon filter I had hanging on the back with a protein skimmer and mechanical filtration, then chemical filtration if needed. I used 1/2 inch coral rock about 1 inch thick with a coral rock layer then after it ran for a month and cycled with four fish in it I put in a layer of live rock once I finished building my light hood with 3 ultralume 5000s and one actinic bulb. It was 1989 and no LEDs yet. I put a red light on for night observations, well worth it. I caught a big spiky worm at night almost as big as a centipede eating my corals. I would put baited with mashed shrimp in pantyhose pieces and the fire worms would get caught in it and I'd remove them in the morning, little beggars sting pretty bad if you handle them without gloves. I soon got rid of all of them judging from I stopped catching or seeing any. I had more Halimeda calcareous algae that I trimmed it back with the caulerpa grape algae. My tap water had a PH of almost 9 and was loaded with calcium and I used it to top my tank for evaporation. I had no nitrates and one turbo snail is all I needed for algae control. I changed 5 gallons a month just cause although I don't know if it needed it, except for micronutrients it probably didn't. I had a mandarin goby in there that got all its food from the rock and I fed the corals with pureed shrimp, clams. I had two clownfish who lived in my big coral that lasted forever. I had to move cross country and sold the tank with everything Luckily it is a lot easier moving twenty gallons in buckets, but the guy essentially got a finished and cycled tank for $200. We only took two hours to move it as he showed up with two buckets to go with my two buckets.

I’m not saying it’s not a gorgeous tank - it’s definitely beautiful. The only criticism I can offer (and I hope you think it’s constructive) is that surface film on top of the water, maybe you’re fine with it but it would drive me CRAZY (not to mention it interferes with gas exchange and light penetration). You can buy really cheap, small surface skimmers on eBay for like $10. They’re mostly used in freshwater but I don’t think there’s any reason not to try it in a saltwater tank if you don’t have an overflow/sump.
@DannysAquariums2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! Yeah, it drives me crazy as well haha. It looks gross. ;) I sometimes place an EHEIM surface skimmer in the tank and that gets rid of the film in minutes. The only thing is, I can’t stand the “slurping” sound the surface skimmer makes. Especially at night. I’ve been thinking about installing one in each of my tanks and put them on a timer, so it skims a few times a day and stays off during the night.
