Thank you so much for sharing! I’m curious what you are shooting with. Looks an awfully long lens to be using handheld!

Hi Jasmine, I was shooting with a Sony Alpha 1 and 400mm F2.8 Lens, the image stabilization is incredible! Formerly, I was using a 300 without IS and it was much more difficult to get steady shots at lower shutter speeds. Stoked on the Sony IS!

I was wondering about that, in the sense of it being hard on the back. Looks really heavy! Then again, I don't have much strength with my regular lenses, a spot in my back catches a lot. :)

is it usual for a camera man to exit the vehicle and perhaps dangerous to walk through long grasses to get a shot? Loving the video results.
@DonalBoyd12 жыл бұрын
Howdy Larry, thanks so much for watching, and great question. It is possible sometimes to exit the vehicle but never advised for the public or tourists unless you are with someone who has the experience to read the bush. Although I've built up knowledge over the years and can read the signs, cues, and signals of the animals and their behavior, I still rely on my good friend and professional guide, Stephen Croucamp to look out for me and advise. Since I'm focused on the photography, I'm not always able to constantly check my surroundings. He's there with a sort of 360 awareness to ensure I'm safe and is the default advisory for any exits from the vehicle.

Great video! I'm also wondering what the photographer was shooting with. Hand held at that range would require some really good stabilization! I also wonder what the camera in the protective case was for.

Hi Melani thanks so much for watching! It's a Sony 400mm F2.8. Although the lens isn't light, per se, it's for sure much less heavy than you expect for its size. I'm no bodybuilder, but I can easily hold up the lens, move it around, and carry it without much stress. A huge plus with the Sony 400 though is the IS. It's insane actually. I played with turning it on and off and was surprised at how much a difference it really did make in the shots at lower shutter speed.

The protective case... it's my custom "camera box" that I use to photograph Elephants, Lions, etc. from the ground. We've already filmed and have a video being published in May sharing the story and approach that I use to photograph wildlife from ground level with the box :D Stay tuned!

I just yesterday and the day before that I watched two episodes of Watch Animals Up Close with Bertie Gregory from National Geographic on Disney Plus and the first episode focuses on Bertie Gregory and his team of filmmakers observing and watching a family of pumas/cougars including a mother cougar raising her cubs in Peru in the Andes Mountains and how the pumas hunted Gunancos a relative of the llama and how some pumas entered some farms home to sheep and dogs and tried to hunt and eat some of the sheep and had close encounters with the dogs. It even teaches us how pumas are way more common to see in the Andes Mountains of South America than the American Southwest/Pacific Northwest and California in North America. The next episode focuses on Bertie Gregory and his team of filmmakers watching and witnessing some fish and other sea creatures living in the coral reefs of French Polynesia and how he while scuba diving witnessed some bottlenose dolphins, green sea turtles, blacktip reef sharks, manta rays, devil rays (The animal he came there to see in the first place.), barracudas and coral reef fish like moorish idols and bump head sheep fish and jellyfish (Climate change and overfishing has been causing jellyfish populations to increase.) and anchovies. This is an awesome series! I need to watch all the other episodes and this series as well as lots of other BBC Earth nature documentaries I have watched in my childhood including the ones narrated by David Attenborough have inspired me to become a nature and science book author and writer and nature wildlife photographer and filmmaker someday.

I try that every day, but since I am located in central europe there are no elephants outside nor giraffes....

Haha, just need to head a little more south. Or back in time to when there were Elephants roaming Europe.
