Ever wonder what working in the LTL Freight Industry looks like? In this driver review video I try and show you what it looks like being a pick up and delivery driver for Old Dominion Freight Line. Jobs at FedEx Freight, Yellow Roadway, XPO Logistics, Estes Express Lines, Saia, ABF Freight, Diamond Line, NPT, North Park Trucking, YRC, Yellow Cab Transit Co, Reddaway, USF would look pretty similar also.
If this video sparked your interest in working for Old Dominion Freight Line and you would like to apply for a job here is the link. I would greatly appreciate if you would put me down as your referral so we can see how many people this video is reaching.

@@LuthiRanchWY it was pretty easy really. A week at the LAS terminal in class about 8 hours a day. Really it pretty much was about getting you ready for the tests at DMV, then after that a month with a trainer doing P&D and then another week doing linehaul training. Then they send you out on your own. I always tell people that wanna start driving that the best way to do it is to go to work for a freight company and get paid to get your license instead of paying a school thousands of dollars and then not have a job when you’re done!

I worked at OD at the Portland Oregon location and it was a mess there. The Operational Managers on both shifts treated their employees bad. I had supervisor experience from being at Fedex Freight for 18 years and they didn't care to ask if I was interest in becoming a sup. The 1.5 year I worked there I seen 4 supervisors came and quit because the OM would ask them to work 15 hours shifts and talk down to them. Their motto there is "We pay you a lot, you don't like it here, then quit!" I am at a better company now and training to become a OM. I was given the opportunity and chance to advance, so thank you Oak Harbor Freight!!!!

I got my CDL through Viking Frt Systems which is now Fed Ex Freight. I worked the docks making $11 an hour for 6moths (avg whse work back then was $8) then went through driver training for 2mos. you then did city work for 2 yrs before you could be considered for line haul. At 60 I am winding down my career. But with a CDL and a good driving record you will never be out of a decent paying job at most LTL carriers,

Great video! I’ve been doing LTL for 10 years with the last 2 at OD in PHX. If you have a normal or smaller pallet under 2k lbs or so, try letting the front wheels of the Jack fall on the lift. It will stop there and gently roll off when it touches the ground, it’s a cool trick and customers get a kick from it. Keep in trucking.

I worked at Yellow. After they went bankrupt I worked at XPO and then Old Dominion, both of which made me leave the LtL world altogether. First and most importantly, the insurance was trash, I think the less I paid for the family plan was $117 a week and I still had to pay a $50 deductible at the doctor. At Yellow, we paid nothing for healthcare and no deductible. Second, and just as much important, is that OD and XPO make it to where you don’t get any overtime, period. None. Yellow didn’t give overtime away, they forced you to work it. Blame it one whoever you want, but the truth is that the LtL space got worse the day Yellow left the market.

I just got hired on with Old Dominion for a local p&D driver. No experience ,1 month out of a federally accredited 160 hour CDL program. I’m not too sure how they will start you off but I know they are needing drivers so you will probably go through a small training period with them before they turn you loose. This is what my supervisor told me about hiring drivers with little experience. “I’ve seen guys with 7 months get hired. They just had to attend a creditable school that OD recognizes. I’m just the opposite, I like driving the back roads especially at night since there is hardly any traffic. I’ve filled in up here doing line haul on occasion and there is about a 120 mile stretch once you get off the interstate you drive that you will only pass a handful of cars for 2-3 hours. I’ve really enjoyed working for OD if that makes any difference in your decision. I wouldn’t want to do a night shift full time though
