A day in the life of an RV transporter. Tricky delivery and truck damage..

Today I helped transport a 5th wheel RV travel trailer from central Oregon to the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state. I recently bought a sliding 5th wheel hitch for my Ram 3500 and this was it's first test. I also picked up a new real axle housing for my truck since the one I currently have is bent and damaged from welding heat.

The longer the trailer (in relation to the tow vehicle), the easier it gets (of course judging the far back corners gets harder, which is a separate problem). But mostly it's just practice. Some of that is just getting time backing up, even without a trailer. Start by backing into every parking place - which is also safer than backing out anyway.

I did check the lug nuts, as well as air pressure and quite a few other things. But much like with the cement mixer video where so many people told me all the things I "missed"... If I showed the entire pre trip, the video would be an hour long before I even started the truck. As far as the break away switch, there isn't one on a 5th wheel trailer.

Correct, Sequim and Port Angeles are on the Olympic Peninsula, with the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the north, the Pacific Ocean to the west and Puget Sound to the east. I've camped on the Olympic Peninsula many times and it's an amazing place to visit. Wikipedia says Puget Sound runs from Olympia in the south to Port Townsend on the northwest side to Deception Pass / Fidalgo Island on the northeast side. I though the San Juan Islands were part of Puget Sound, but they are also in the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

Being from Tacoma, I know the state and get there by going up Hwy 16 and of course, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge to Hood Canal, then heading up I think Hwy 19 to Chinicum then to Pt Townsend. It's a beautiful drive and the rains sounds like home and is so typical of this area during the rainy season. The last time I was up that way was in 2019 when a niece married her husband at a former property her parents (my middle sister) owned, just north of Chinicum. Much of the wedding party stayed in Pt Townsend or up near it at any rate, all I think renting air BnB's. I have a sister that lives on Bainbridge Island and has since the 1980's and another one in Gig Harbor. There is a reason many of us prefer to live here despite it being dark and wet up to 9 months out of the year.

One refers to the land mass and the other to the body of water. The Olympic Peninsula is a large arm of land in western Washington that lies across Puget Sound from Seattle, and contains Olympic National Park. Your backing up skills are on point Casey! Absolutely awesome. I know your truck has a list of issues to rectify but your setup and the 5th wheel hook up you added seems absolutely prefect. Speaking of issues no wonder you were mad about having to buy a new rear axle. Wearing my Cascade Heavy Rescue Towing shirt today Casey!

You sure did a good job backing that trailer all the way down the road and then into that sloping spot, much better than what I would do! And WOW on your rear axle! That just sucks! For 5 years I lived in Winlock Wa, and you MIGHT have 2 weeks in the summer when it would not rain. I told my Wife, that if my job up here in this "Rain Forest" ever went to pot, I was NEVER going to get another one here. And then Mount St Hellens blew up, and since I worked for Weyerhaeuser, I moved to Nevada and got a job in a gold mine. I have seen it rain so hard up there that the water would be 1/2" deep on the road. It could not run off fast enough.

That particular body of water near where you delivered the trailer is Hood Canal. It is part of Puget Sound, and the Salish Sea. The Olympic Peninsula is the land mass that is bordered on the West by the Pacific Ocean, on the East by Puget Sound, and on the North by the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The “Puget Sound Region” is kind of the local term for the areas that are adjacent to the water. Basically the I-5 corridor from Olympia at the South to Bellingham at the North.

Pleasant Harbor is on the Olympic Peninsula side of the Hood Canal, which is a long fjord that's an inlet of Admiralty Inlet. Across the Hood Canal from Pleasant Harbor is the Kitsap Peninsula, where Bremerton is. The difficulty in remembering it all is that colloquially, it's all "the Puget Sound", even though that only technically refers to the water ways between the east side (Seattle) and the Kitsap Peninsula. Above the tip of Kitsap, between Port Townsend and Whidbey island is Admiralty Inlet. Bremerton faces Sinclair Inlet, which is bounded by Port Orchard and Bainbridge Island. The whole "Puget Sound" area has so many bays, inlets, and peninsulas even the locals can't keep track! There are huge bodies of water even local residents don't really know exist.

Such reminiscences when we drove from San Francisco up to the Olympic Peninsula and back to Seattle on our USA trip from the UK, all on the 101 so we must have passed Pleasant Harbour Road going south, also Hill Auto Body & Towing going north. We saw our first bear ambling across the road on the other side of the peninsula. Sadly I'm to old to rent a hire car now so it's all escorted trips and cruises (Covid allowing - we lost our son to it).

Backing up is easy if you know how to do it’s. Grab the steering wheel at the bottom between your legs. If you want the trailer to swing left, push the steering wheel to the left and the opposite for right. Easy peasy.
