Helping a homeless veteran start a new life. Off road recovery with a twist

John is 70 years old and spent 17 years in the army until he could no longer pass the hearing test and was medically retired. He has found himself homeless for the last few years and has been living in his van in the mountains. Recently a big storm stranded John in town with no access back to his van, and he ended up having to stay in a homeless shelter for 6 weeks until the VA and the Central Oregon Outreach Association were able to set him up with a temporary motel, and a two year stay at a tiny home community. The only problem was that everything he owned was in his van stranded in the mountains. Luckily this wee we had a break in the weather and I was able to take him up to get his van, and bring it back to town to a spot he can park it for the week until it can be moved to his new tiny home.
I don't post these things for any sort of clout or recognition, I post them in hopes of it inspiring someone else to help others as well. John was well aware of the KZbin channel before hand and was all for being on and hoping this inspires someone else as well. His goal for the year is to get himself into a better position so that he can help other veterans receive the same type of help that he did. Awesome guy.

For all of those wanting to know how you can help John.. first of all, thank you! And secondly, I'm going to talk to him later this week when I help get him moved into his tiny home and see what it is that he needs, and what type of assistance he thinks will be the most beneficial to him. After that I will let you guys know and I will get some sort of fundraiser setup. But I have to be smart about it so that anything we do doesn't have a negative effect on the assistance he's receiving from the VA. My initial thought is to setup a fundraiser to get his van fixed so that he has reliable transportation. He talked of maybe trying to find another cheap vehicle, but his van is very sentimental to him and I can see him getting choked up at the thought of replacing it.

Casey thank you so much for helping John. So many of our Veterans are forgotten 😢 💔 we help to many countries that have done nothing for us 🇺🇸 😕. What a beautiful story and fantastic video! I loved the moment when John decided to narrate the video - I felt in that moment that for once in a very long time, he felt valued again and contributing to the world around him as the intelligent Man that he truly is. I had a good chuckle during the scene when you had to run ~ 100 foot of winch line to move the truck a foot. Most of us who own or have owned a winch, can totally relate to that situation. I am a Viet Nam veteran and I use the VA when their benefits outweigh the hassle of getting them. The VA is the largest providor of hearing aids in the world. Anyone in the VA medical system is eligible for testing and free or low cost hearing aids. I just got my second set and they are Phonak Paradise P90's which would cost $7000 plus from a local Audiologist. Mine were free because I was in a Combat Arms MOS (Combat Engineer) and the VA admits just the training trashed my hearing, My brother in law was in the Navy ,not Combat Arms, and he paid two or three copays of $50 for his hearing aids. The VA may attempt to fit low tech hearing aids. Do some research and get high tech rechargeable hearing aids. You will have 5 months to return your hearing aids for any reason and upgrade. I suggest starting out with high level equiptment Disability payments are available for severe hearing loss and for tinnatis, but they are not very high. Lessons: If you are in the VA medical system, get your hearing evaluated, If you are not in the system; get in.

John is a natural behind the camera and so thoughtful about wanting to save the battery. As an ex British army mechanic i thank you for the help and support. We need more people like you and less Karens in the world i wish John all the best for the future and hope he can get back onto his feet and heading in the right direction.
