Beautiful dog. How confident are you with her off leesh? Does she have high prey drive?
@NataliePowellAGreytLife3 жыл бұрын
Olive doesn’t seem to have a very strong prey drive, she will look mildly interested at moving things and will watch a cat across the street if she sees one, but doesn’t demonstrate any urgent need to run after them. However, I am always mindful that it’s in her blood to chase, so if I do see any small creature I always make sure she’s on lead. She always runs in a big circle or figure 8 around me if she’s off for a run, and either comes back to me to be put back on lead or waits for me to get to her. Some greys however, will run and not come back, and if there’s no fence to stop them you may lose them and it could end up badly. I certainly carefully pick the time and place for her to have a run.

I worked with retired racing greys for a dozen years. I have owned three. They are NOT "made to race". Believe me. They love, love, love to race and run. Many owner, after the dog is retired, continue to enter them in lure coursing events so that they can race.

Olive was wondering why you keep filming her. 😀 I'm so glad you rescued her. I've heard about the horrors of what happens to Greyhounds when they are "retired." She's probably happier now than she's ever been.
@NataliePowellAGreytLife5 жыл бұрын
Dawn Pleasant she’s used to me sticking my iPhone in her face 😂 Yes, the stores of mass cruel disposal of finished Greyhounds is heartbreaking. Olive is such a loving pet, awful to think of others with the same potential being destroyed. Thanks for watching 😊
@greenshp5 жыл бұрын
Huh? I volunteered with greyhound "retirement" for a dozen years. Most of them have great lives. The tiny percentage who suffer abuse have that BEFORE retirement. After that, they are placed in loving homes. So I have no idea what you think you are talking about. Maybe you misspoke? (And most love racing, by the way - I used to lure course with mine and could hardly hold them, they'd get so excited to run.) Let's give credit to the 95% of breeders, trainers and racetracks who treat them well, the thousands of volunteers like myself who work WITH racetracks and loving breeders to put them in a greyt home, and the many forever families who, like Olive's, have given them fantastic retirement years. I might add . . . I have myself fostered over 50, and have owned 3. All three were very happy racing, and were treated well while racing; in two cases the people who have owned them in the racing years called me regularly to check and make sure they were happy and thriving.
@greenshp5 жыл бұрын
I replied to Dawn below, but I have to say - during the ten plus years I worked extensively with greyhounds as a volunteer, I really never encountered any "mass disposal" except in Spain, Portugal and the UK. In the U.S., where I was based, there were no mass killings by the time I was involved (the 1990s) but some emaciated, banged-up hounds came by truckloads out of Florida. Always Florida, for some reason. We got them from all over. A lot from Texas and New Mexico, and they were in good shape physically and emotionally. I fostered dozens through the years; the three I owned came from tracks in Iowa, Kansas, and Texas, and all were great. In the cases of Kansas and Texas, the breeders and racetrack called regularly through the years to say "hi" and check on the dog.

You so calmly let her off leash! I am still so scared my mindy would see something and bolt. She has a big fenced yard to zoom in,though.
@NataliePowellAGreytLife6 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is a risk to let them off lead, and technically not allowed. However, I am very lucky that Olive just loves to do figure of 8 zoomies around me and has always returned - so far! I know many Greyhounds would bolt if given the chance. I really do feel that Olive is a very special Greyhound! Thanks for watching! :)

I know I’m late to the video but seeing your grey and cat together really surprised me in a good way, I wish my grey would be nice around cats but she would not hesitate to chase and kill one but she is a ex racer so it makes sense
@NataliePowellAGreytLife3 жыл бұрын
Some greys are excellent with cats and some aren’t. Olive is an ex racer too, but when I was looking to adopt one, I specifically asked for a cat friendly one. Perhaps yours has a stronger prey drive than Olive does. How is yours with small dogs? Olive loves them sometimes more than she likes bigger dogs.
@kaijuaceanimations833 жыл бұрын
@@NataliePowellAGreytLife, my grey is fine with small dogs, her best friend is a small dog but the small dog also hates cats so they’re both always looking for them, my dog is actually not so good with big dogs she likes being the biggest dog around, she usually ok when I’m walking her but my mother gets tense so that goes to the dog and makes her tense, so of the leash my dog would be fine with any dog really, my girl is actually very large for a female, she’s a little smaller than most males but every other female we see my grey dwarfs them
@NataliePowellAGreytLife3 жыл бұрын
