I am just starting my college years and trying to m=find my path. ever since i was 7 i always thought i was suppose to be a chef and that i WANTED to be one. Throughout the year though i noticed that i'd try to search for something different to do and for most of the careers i felt interested in they were about helping someone in need. I've just recently changed my career path from wanting to become a chef into wanting to become a social worker. My head said 'chef' but when I thought of being a social worker and helping others it felt right in my heart. This video really helps me seeing how much i want to do/be this. thank you so much

Interesting thing about paperwork to me is that it can be annoying and tedious but sometimes it's a needed break. Don't know how your agency's like but from my experience, things can get chaotic and crazy with what happens on a given day. Most times, people like us thrive in that environment, but that's also what can be rly stressful in this field. So something like paperwork is a constant that can be relied on. Still tho, yea, I agree the best parts are interacting with clients.

But yea, That's really great that your field placement became your social work position. That's always great to see happen. In my class we took alot of tests and most of them pointed me in the direction of socail work. I love helping people no matter who they are. I have epilepsy so I can get driven to my house to another place but if I need to go 5 places in one it can be hard. I am in college and I HAVE to pick a major. Do you think socail work is right for me?

+Ben Simon Thats great LGBTQ is one of the most underserved populations and true social workers are needed because the trauma that gay youth experience affects their growth and deveopment and directs where they will probably end up in life-it's very challenging Ben but, I think it might be your calling if you want to help gay teens this is a good job and you will have use of resources but all cities in the USA don't have the funding these agencies need to operate but helping one person move in the right direction means alot.

+IT's My THING! In high school my social worker was like my mom i could trust her with anything and because i have a homophobic family she was the help i needed. If it wasn't for her i would not even be here today and i want to do what she did for me. All the time when i see LGBTQ youth kill themselves i keep thinking this needs to stop and i want to help that stop. If i can stop at least one gay kid from even thinking life is not worth living then i did my job. And there are also gay Deaf kids and if i work at a hearing school i can talk to Deaf youth as well.

Why do social workers get paid so little? Every social worker should be earning around 45,000 to 75,000 dollars.

There are several admin positions/ director positions you can get as a social worker. It all depends what field you go into.

It really depends on location. Sadly in the U.S. social workers get paid very little. In other western countries like the Canada, social workers get paid a decent amount, around 50-80k a year.

Where do you live? My aunt was a social worker, and I'm currently studying to be one. There are bad social workers, but nobody receives a "bonus" for taking away children. That's usually the last resort.

Nina True, in AB Canada, unless the parents are totally unfit to care for the kids and there are no relatives or even neighbours that could take them, then the kids get taken into care. If anything I've seen other social workers not take kids away from homes I would've thought were highly unsuitable for a child to be raised in.

I am aware he wasn't my child but the system of procedures for CPS is to place the child in the custody of a family member when available. I just pray that this was a negative experience due to the sub culture of a small community because if it is the same everywhere then their is minimal hope for the CPS organization. Hopefully this was a bad apple and not a bad tree and sorry that I came to the premature conclusion that all social workers are alike.

I'm so puzzled. How can social workers diagnose patients. I thought it was through a psychiatrist? I have heard of social workers diagnosing mental health patients. That's interesting for me. I know of brief assessments, however mental health is very specific and are from medical models of care as well as an integrated practice model of psycho education. Just curious from how other social workers in mental health function in other countries. Very interesting.

If you were truly wronged, then that is very unfortunate. However, we are only hearing your side of the story and there is usually much more that we do not here. To remove a child from a home it typically takes a history of problems...not just one. And the fact is that you were trying to gain custody of a child that is not yours. Never an easy or quick process. Sorry for your bad experience. Hope it works out well for you.
