I grew up in Smithtown and my friends and I used to meet every Memorial Day for 10 years straight and canoe the Nissequoge River! We had some amazing times. The spot where you stopped for lunch used to have a rope swing. We would do a Tarzan swing and jump into the water. Thanks for bringing back those memories. Such a beautiful river and glad to see it is still thriving.

My home kayak/ canoe river ! Started many decades ago, with canoe, and then kayaks hit the scene. The key definitely is timing the tide. When you talked about losing the water, and getting stuck, that is just the tip of the iceberg. In the flats, there is no getting out, and walking the river. It’s mud, and it’s dangerous. As a retired, local fireman/emt, I can’t tell you how many times rescues had to be performed , for folks that decided to bail, and try to walk. I have always found putting in at the Bull, at high tide, and riding it out… is the safest, and most enjoyable way, with minimal need to paddle. Have a bud meet you at the park, on Landing Ave, with your cooking needs and supplies.

Definitely Purple Martin houses. Yes, they crank down so the houses can be cleaned. I lived in Aquebogue, near Riverhead. We had several Purple Martin houses, and they do eat tons of mosquitoes. Thanks for the vid! Go out and paddle Peconic Bay, if you haven't already. You can take the LIRR from Penn Station, NYC right to Riverhead and walk a short distance to put in in downtown Riverhead at the marina, which will take you out into Peconic Bay. Paddle over to Indian Island campground and stay a few days. It's a wonderful place. Maybe you've already done this and made a video about it. A bientot, mon ami!

I've been on the Nissequogue many times. It's an enjoyable and scenic paddle with interesting places to explore. It is very tidal though and if you're going to paddle it, check the tides. It pretty much empties out at low tide. At high tide though you can barely fit or not fit under the foot bridge and 25A bridge. Heading south from the put in, and going right,t, there is a stream going up to a small waterfall. The last time i was up there, a tree had fallen across the stream, so I couldn't go any further. Also heading south and going to the left, you come upon that pool with houses around it and the waterfall. Years ago, that house with the waterfall on the side was a gristmill or some other kind of facility that had a wheel on the side. It was turned by another spillway closer to the house. Where you stopped for lunch, there is often deer walking around. They are plentiful in that area. When I was race training, I would do a round trip on the Nissequogue if there was enough water. That is about 12 miles. If there was not enough water, I would go out to the sound and paddle west past Sunken Meadow, Callahan's Beach, Fort Salonga and up to Crab Meadow Beach, then turn around and come back. That was about 14 miles. Or I would go east to the entrance to Stony Brook Harbor and back. That is also about 14 miles. I often met up with other paddlers and had some great sunset and moon rise paddles. Paddling the sound was good training for racing or long distance paddles, but as the days shortened or I got out late and knew I would be returning when it was getting dark, no doubt, the Nissequogue is safer, especially if you're going out alone.

@@TwoFeetOutdoors If you happen to show up at the Nissequogue River at low tide, you will be able to go pretty much nowhere if you launch from the Paul Givens County Park. You can still paddle some of the northern part of the river if you launch from the Nissequogue State Park or Sunken Meadow. Or you can paddle in the sound.

@cncprogrammer3265 Yes, I'm 100% familiar with the tides. I did explain a lot of that in the video. Sometimes, I enjoy two-way paddles on the Nissequogue. As you know, it's all about timing the tides.

Hi Mike! Great video, been watching on my other profile. Really dig the camping out in the wilderness area of fire island, and loving these kayaking videos, especially the one in the city, never knew it was there! I’ve canoed this river before and it was fantastic.. my buddy lives in that old mill that you first showed, it’s interesting that it used to flood and her furniture is on pulleys for that reason.. was an old postal route station I believe. Question for you though; how do you get back to your car? Been really wanting to kayak some of the navigable rivers but always wonder how to get back.. Hiking I just Uber or have a friend/family get me.
@TwoFeetOutdoors
@TwoFeetOutdoors 6 ай бұрын
I really appreciate you watching and commenting! Thank you for subscribing too. Anytime I do a single direction paddle, I typically Uber back to the start. That wouldn't be possible with a hardshell kayak unless you left it at the finish then went back for it after getting back to your car. This is part of the reason I love my folding kayaks. Suits my adventures so much better. I like the versatility of them.

I really like your Kayak. I never knew that foldable Kayaks existed. I use a standard Kayak and it does get to be a pain to haul around, store, and I have to also use and keep a trailer. But this may be an option that I need to do some more research on. My main concern is how durable it is if you bottom out - which on the Nissequogue is sometimes the case.
@TwoFeetOutdoors

@@TwoFeetOutdoors Good to know it is holding up well. I am leaning towards the Tucktec version. I think the Ora is overall better and has easier portability the way it folds compacted and weighs a bit less. But, when it comes to budget the Tucktec has more appeal for me. Plus I do think the Tucktec solid plastic shell may be just a bit more durable in the long run. Thanks again for the video! It made me aware of products that I didn't know existed.

I'm sure it's brackish the whole way. I'm guessing there's a larger fresh water percentage closer to Paul T. Given Park to the south. The fresh water Nissequogue running into the Long Island Sound would be brackish the whole way especially involving the rising tides.
