A DAY TRIP TO MILLPORT (lets take a drive) October 2024

Last time I was on Cumbrae was in the 80s. I got chased off the island by a swarm of wasps! They'd previously been nesting on a small boat just offshore. Locals scuttled it the previous year to get rid of them, but the wee sods just moved to a nearby tree in such numbers that they completely covered it. I had the misfortune of discovering their new home. Luckily, I got away without getting stung, but it's not pleasant when you think you've got away only to discover they've got under your jacket! The wasps didn't stop me going back. Moving up north did. It's still one of my favourite places in Scotland and it doesn't look much different to what I remember. Thanks for the memories, Paul.

Best yet Paul! Fiana is the star o the video. Used to work on Millport back in the late 80s with the Waterboard outta Kilwinning..the road te the golf course is where the filter station that supplies the island water is. Round the back of the island, Sam.Torrance the golfer used te have a holiday home and lots of the houses on the main drag were holiday homes/lets too. Tech wise get a mic wi a wind muff cuts oot the wind bluster. Keep On Truckin Guys.

Great vid and hope you enjoyed your visit to Cumbrae!! I grew up on the island and family still live on the island. To answer your question regarding locals getting the ferry cheaper...Up until recently, locals did in fact receive a discount, as a foot passenger or vehicle with passengers but this has now stopped. CalMac also used to only charge for a return ticket at the Largs side and anyone going back over to Largs would obviously not have to pay. This has now stopped and you pay both ways now. When I was at Largs Academy, the school ferry pass would get you over for free and you had a grace period if you missed the school crossing, you would get over for free on the next crossing. Most times the ferry staff just waved the kids on regardless how late they were after the school crossing 😃
