The animal was most likely an “itachi”, or weasel. I used to have one in my old place in Osaka. It would come in through a hole, climb up the walls, then run around the ceiling. It was probably hunting for whatever might be up there because it would usually not stay. Saw it a few times running from the house and managed to find and cover the entrance point. Japanese friends have told me it’s quite common.

Not a common problem for us in central Tokyo hahaha. we are city slickers for sure.

This will sound weird, but the first 3 minutes of the vid were so nostalgic for me. Packing up the leave a ryokan, with conbini shopping bags being used for rubbish, conbini snacks on the table, etc brings back so many great memories of travelling Japan with my family. Cannot wait to get back there soon. Take care guys.

I'm late to this one but wanted to thank you again for taking us along! The ATV/go-cart stuff was a lot of fun, but the whole trip was. I always try not a have a plan since I get anxious and cranky if something goes wrong, so not having a plan and just wandering at my leisure works better for me. Love seeing what you guys stumble upon and how much you enjoy it!

I spent an afternoon and evening in Okinawa, where all I did was ask cab drivers what coolest thing happening around was. I remember ending up in the middle of nowhere at a lantern festival. Some of the best trips happen on a whim.

The animal thing happened to me the other day. I was literally tripping out when I heard something crawling around in my ceiling. I thought it would leave. Then it started scratching and trying to get into the house. It was really freaky. I think it was a hakubishin (civet)
@kydeanderic3 жыл бұрын
haha, we once had two squirrels that lived in the ceiling right about our bed (in america) and they woke up every morning at like 5am and had furious sex. It was really annoying. -E

I love rural Japan, my dream is to move to a northern medium sized city in Hokkaido. I hated Tokyo summers when I lived there I couldn’t breath
@kydeanderic3 жыл бұрын
Yea, it gets stuffy in the summers but you get used to it. Ideally a place in Hokkaido for the summer and another place somewhere further south for the rest of the year would be ideal in my book, haha. -E

So haven’t watched the video yet but I’m fascinated by the title which led me to google to confirm that Nasu means eggplant in Japanese. This lead me to the rabbit hole which is Wikipedia and I learned nasu is not just eggplant and a place but an ethnic Chinese group, a writer, and a footballer among many other things. The more you know.

If you think it’s a rat, it’s a mouse. If you think it’s a herd of elephants scratching away - it’s rats. Source: painful lived experience.
@TT-zd6nr3 жыл бұрын
Certainly a rat from the description. When we moved to rural Suffolk in England, we saw rats in the outbuildings and then one arrived in the roofspace. The answer: a feral rescue cat no one wanted (but us). This small and vicious kitty took out over 10 on her first day and several afterwards. Years later, no rats. She also visited neighbours and as we found out later they all gave her breakfast:)
