Driving 3 hours to go look at a champion road grader that will not move , and spending some time with my better half .

I'm a heavy mechanic sitting here having lunch watching another heavy mechanic doing what he does well, we're a disappearing breed young man! A mechanic gets his bare hands dirty & understands what he's working on, a tech has a scan tool, rubber gloves & quite often has no idea how what he's working on actually works. 20yrs ago I changed over to 24hr road service breakdown for long haul truckers in the Idaho Rockies, best thing I ever did. Your girl is way cool Mate!

@Dusk Here's some good advice for you. Never assume anything, in life & in the automotive repair business. You "assumed" I'm some grouchy old prick that hates the world & you are not even close. I have a long history in four different countries, of mentoring young guys starting out who were actually willing to learn & helped many of them start their own businesses. Five years ago I met an interested young guy at a car show who had been floundering for two years after High School & gave him a job. This year, right before this virus crap, I helped him start his own business doing road service for truckers & it's going great. His older brother lost his job in all that crap as well so I taught him how to change truck tires & now he has his own deal going. Talk to the old farts & show you're interested, you'll find somebody with a mind like a library who wants to share. Never assume!

i wonder if the flywheel was surfaced wrong.. if you have not put it back together please measure the step height above the friction surface.. there should be a spec for how much the cover pulls down when putting it back on.. if somebody surfaced the intermediate plates without figuring out how to shorten the stack up ring.. it will burn the clutch out every time. that one looks new... so there is an issue there.. remember when you put the cover on and just have the bolts started but you have NOT compressed the clutch cover yet.. there should be about 1/2" perhaps 3/4" i don't have the spec book on that clutch.. a clutch rebuilder will have it.. how much the cover should pull down.. look carefully at the cover spacer ring.. i would bet that at least 2 of the thru bolt holes are larger and the spacer has threads cut so you can bolt the cover to the spacer... load the clutch stack in it and then use the hoist to set it in place.. this is a wild guess on my part.. but i have been a professional auto mechanic for only the last 40 years..

Prior service by any chance? 90% of the field service techs I ever worked with were prior military, I guess we were the only ones that would lay in a frozen mud hole with a torch. You have to think on your feet without a shop full up parts to back you up. A special breed of mechanic for sure.
