I think this is the first time I've seen him take more than 10 swings to split a log.

As an Aussie I always wondered how you so easily split the logs....we had a farm full of yellow box and iron wood trees. These ones literally tell you that you can shove the axe up your arse!
@sam11148072Ай бұрын
They are fantastic as chopping boards in the kitchen though 😍
@Balcora0TannisАй бұрын
From experience.. our wood, especially the ironbarks around here, do exactly two things.. makes you super fit, and also makes you really good at sharpening / fixing tools... Thats why all our shows have wood-chopping, its basically "Who will win, the log; or the sanity of the poor bastard with the axe"

@ThorenBradleyАй бұрын
No. But hardness also doesnt necessarily dictate difficulty to split either. We have manzanita which is harder, but spits way easier.

Love that you’re chopping eucalyptus 🇦🇺 A lot of Australians know the struggle! There are heaps of species of it, which one is in California?

Tazmanian blue gum is one we have (that’s the one I like most for firewood) we also have other eucalyptus species too. Softer ones

Thats absolutely wild, had no idea it was that tough. I planted a small stand of eucalyptus a few years ago for firewood as it's so fast growing, might have to hire a splitter when it comes to the harvest!

Reminds me of Campbor trees in Florida. They planted a forest of these to harvest the oil and then it never really panned out. Birds ate the seeds and crapped them everywhere. Now we have camphor trees everywhere and they're totally trash trees. We call them weeds. You can cut them down to nothing and they grow right back.

Another thing with Eucalypts is that they're absolutely filled with oil, to the point that the 'Blue' part of the 'Blue Mountains' comes from the haze formed by the oils coming out of the canopies. This also makes them an extreme bushfire risk, which is fine for the tree and the native plants here, most of them regenerate from and spread by fire, but it's not so great for humans or environments they've been introduced to.
@CrimsonRandАй бұрын
It's also extremely flammable and is definitely contributing to wildfires on the west coast

It’s my absolute favorite firewood. Most BTU per cord that there is. Plus very low ash.
@tazsnoop104429 күн бұрын
As an Australian I know your pain yes we do split it from the out side never through the middle, but most of all we don't use it cause it's so hard , stringy bark gum is the best for splitting and heat
@Alan_Hans__Ай бұрын
As an Aussie I dream of wood as easy to split as blue gum. Grey box and ironbark make bluegum look like some sort of wussy north american "hardwood".

Hello my friend. I live in NSW Central Tablelands - Orange. I used to have a 200 acre block of land, house, etc. My opinion of Aussie trees, great for firewood, impossible to find a straight piece for building. Need to cut, stack, dry, then use. Did a lot of personal splitting like you. Either we had a block splitter or an axe, nothing in between. Love your work. Either a block splitter or an axe. Don't think your timber is as tough or impossible to split like some Aussie hardwood. Keep your vid going, can you cut or delete your swering ? Don't bother me, would like to show family.

Just hand split 2 ton of red gum. It's cold here. Bark still on means it hasn't cured yet - it take two inches of thickness per year to cure...and you didn't use a splitting wedge! You are one tough monkey! Australia
