Good analysis. One thing to note is that Kasper had a bad start last season as he was coming off of an injury (broken kneecap) that he got in his NHL debut that April. This derailed his off-season and he was slow to start. He came on in the second half of the season and was arguably the best forward Grand Rapids had (Burgers and Mazur up there too) in the post season. He is currently tearing it up in camp and preseason this year and looks better than Joey V, Copp, and Compher down the middle. He deserves a spot and will likely surprise a lot of people. The problem is the veteran roster clog SY made at center.
@DTA555.4 ай бұрын
They were playing on the same line in the playoffs and they were the best line. Bergs is not going anywhere in the bottom six so he should be packaged in a trade to get Mazur and Kasper in the NHL and let Danielson get some AHL time and then bring him up, MBN should be in GR and not over seas.

You just looked at Johanssons and Wallinders point totals lmao, Albert is a seriously good defensive defenseman
@lucasmountain31394 ай бұрын
Exactly, fantastic shutdown Dman in GR the last 2 years, and he’s looked solid in the preseason. He’s not gonna score much, but he’s a shutdown dman that would honestly mesh well with ASP. Wallinder was relatively sheltered with playing on the 3rd pairing with newpower and Didier. With Ed and AJ moving up, wallinder will be leading the defense. This year will be the year we can depict if he will amount to anything
@chevelle14 ай бұрын
That’s the problem with so many fans that evaluate defensemen based on…offense, not defense. Defensive dmen routinely get dismissed by (mostly younger) fans. They don’t understand that you can’t win without them, especially in the playoffs. On that point, the Norris trophy needs to be for best defensive defenseman. That is the job of the position. Or have another trophy. The Norris always just goes to whoever has the most points essentially.

The Red Wings and the Wild are in very similar positions right now: Middle of the pack, good prospect pools, but overpaid veterans & Buyouts are hindering them from being true playoff teams, but that will change soon. Next summer, Detroit has 20M in cap space and no big contracts that need to be signed. Detroit never had a chance to draft a gamebreaker with their lottery luck, but Kasper, Mazur, Danielson, Brandsegg-Nygård could turn into Lehkonen, Pinto, Lundell, Eriksson EK type players. Valuable players especially in the playoffs. Florida traded for Tkachuk and signed Bobrovsky, Vegas traded for Eichel, Carolina traded for Guentzel, Yzerman just needs to be aggressive when a top player becomes available.

Thats from the players and coaches.. for Marco Kasper he started last year really bad. Probably getting use to smaller ice.. But in the second half he played very well and probably was GR's best player in the playoffs. Him or Carter Mazur. And Marco looks like a different player this preseason. He's much faster, looks bigger, better hands ext.. If anyone might be a "Brayden Point" type of drafted player, it would be Amadeus Lombardi. Detroit are in the have a shit ton of veterans that are overpaid phase of their rebuild. Their ownership would have to be stupid to fire Yzerman if they don't make the playoffs again. Sure he's made a few questionable deals the last couple years and the team isn't really that great on paper and I think that's probably the point. Trying to force success right now doesn't make any sense for where the team is at in the rebuild right now.

This is exactly how I have felt about the Red Wings, I’m actually very low on them like I think they already lost the rebuild. They got screwed out of top 3 picks, only really managed to get guys like Seider, Raymond, Larkin, who are all elite but not franchise altering players, have traded for a bunch of mid guys who won’t be part of the long term plan for some reason. Like to me the Red Wings are pretty much set to max out at like a team that never makes it past the 1st or 2nd round until they enter their next rebuild I think they genuinely just fucked it up due to bad luck bad signings bad trades

Larkin will likely be past his prime when the Wings are true contenders again. This rebuild has problems. A lot of poor drafting and not sure how anyone can claim that this team is coming out of a rebuild when they don’t even have a true elite #1 center. We have 1 top two center and he’s a #2 on a cup contender. It’s a shame that Holland screwed this organization up so bad in his last 5 yrs. Instead of passing the torch like they did with Yzerman, Shanny, Lidstrom, etc to Zetterberg and Datsyuk and Kronwall, Those 3 didn’t really have anyone to pass the torch to besides Larkin. That’s something nobody talks about, but is a huge part of winning culture.

Great Vid Mike, I like that you are addressing the Wings and I respect your analysis. Can yzerman's 2019-2020 non first round drafting really be graded yet? Albert Johansson is just now getting this chance at the NHL level. I love the respect for buchelnikov, cant wait to see what he can do, but still yet to see NA ice. I think you mocked MBN to Detroit, nice one. I don't think the Redwings are trying to 'win now'. Yzerman has never said that and is even hesitant to say they are trying to make the playoffs. I like your perspective on the season being better if young guys excel and vets submarine, it is true we could use some more inner development. The wings still have more prospects than players, I agree we are at least 3-4 years from competing for a cup, but in the meantime yzerman is trying to field a competitive team.

@@RealMoneybags I think it’s fair to judge the 2019 guys at this point, 2020 maybe a tad but even Johansson has enough of a sample size where I don’t think he will be a serious impact guys. MBN and ASP will probably make or break the Yzerplan need one of those guys to hit big.

2 words stop gap. After going through their picks from 2021 onward this team never had much of a choice on how Yzerman approached the rebuild. Cossa despite the too many goalies debacle and having one year in echl he's performed just as well if not better than Wallstead. Yzermans weakness or lack of options the free agent market/signings. If you can see the potential of Kane, Holl, Copp, Petry, Chiarot, coming off the payroll and the addition of players like ASP, MBN, Danielson, Edvinsson, Mazur, Kasper. I think if you look at that exchange you stop sweating some of the minor mishaps like giving up for vrana or nedelkovich. Cap space is going up and out rookies won't be expensive which means the sky is the limit to really solidify the top 9 because Detroit has nothing but optimal timing coming out of flat cap era.

Those stop gap signings ruined the chances at a better rebuild. They could have gotten a better pick in 2023

Good breakdown… Yzerman’s drafting has been elite. In multiple games up, Edvinsson looked like the best defenseman on the team. Out of the 2 top goalies he’s drafted, at least one should be a very solid nhl’er. Seiders minutes last year were statistically the hardest minutes a d man has played since niedermeier 25 years ago (judging by avg opponent line and d zone shift starts. He did have a head start with Stamkos and Hedman but he also drafted Kucherov and Pointe in addition to vasilevsky. One set of bad contracts happened when no one wanted to play in Detroit, the second to fill immediate needs that would make them competitive. Now they’re on the edge, getting better and the prospects are developing well. On one hand the goal last year for fans was playoffs, but starting the season 89 pts was the target number to make playoffs which they cleared. They did overperform last year and could take a step back but Talbot Gustafsson and Edvinsson should be enough to shave 15 goals against. And they did get a little bit better on offense. If they can clean up their transition game they’re set up to get in the playoffs and be a pain in the ass for whoever they play. Cup contention is 2-3 years away but it’ll be a fun ride. If you’re at this point, thank you for reading my hot takes.

Yeah it's been a real struggle for Ottawa, Buffalo and Detroit all on long term rebuilds with none of them working for years. I like Detroit to sneak in this year ahead of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. I don't know what kind of legs this rebuild has though. They have some old guys like Kane, Tarasenko and Copp at forward and Chiarot, Petry, Holl, Maata and Gustafsson on defense. Edvinsson, Pellikka, Wallinder need to work out. They really need some forward prospects to pan out. They have four goalies to choose from this year :Husso, Talbot, Lyon and Campbell. One of them has to be a solid NHL goalie. Hard to believe Dylan Larkin is 28 already. He's coming in to his tenth NHL season and he played in the playoffs once, in his first year back in 2015/16. I think you are spot on with this analysis.

From an outside perspective I feel like the Yzerplan got off to a good start with the Seider and Raymond picks, however ever since the 21-22 season, it's felt off. He has made quite a few bad signings since then, and he hasn't really had any young players come in and pop since Seider and Raymond's rookie year. He needs Edvinsson to be a thing. And he probably needs the Red Wings to make the playoffs this year or he's gone. I think one of the things that has gotten lost on people is that the late round picks he made in Tampa were probably more of his scouting staff than they were him. From what I've heard, in the NHL, typically the GM makes the first round picks, but the scouts make the later round selections. Whatever scouts he had in Tampa that really watched guys like Palat, Point, and Cirelli play, well I highly doubt that Tampa allowed him to bring them to Detroit with him. If you're gonna give the GM credit for late round picks, then you should be giving Chuck Fletcher credit for picking Kaprisov. As a Devils fan, if you look at Ray Shero's tenure, there were some good picks in the later rounds such as Bratt, Zetterlund, Sharangovich, Schmid is TBD, Gritsyuk TBD, but ultimately it was his first round picks not named Hughes and Hischier who did him in. Zacha at #6, Mcleod at #12, and Ty Smith at #17. As well as trading for guys who really didn't amount to anything like Subban, Gusev, Mirco Mueller. There is a reason why Paul Castron (head of scouting) still has a job here and Shero does not.

Non-Red Wings fans wonder why the rebuild is taking so long🤔DRAFT LOTTERY. Detroit not only failed to ever land a top 3 pick, they also got bumped back almost every year. The Oilers suck and get McDavid. The Devils suck and get Hischier, Hughes, Nemec🤦♂. The Ducks suck and get multiple top 3 picks right off the bat. of course it's slow when you don't land any top picks.

I’m with you on the Oilers, they were managed really poorly before Mcdavid got there and even with Mcdavid for quite awhile, as far as the Devils go, Hughes was an incredible stroke of luck, however Hischier didn’t even turn out to be the best player from his draft and although Nemec looks good it’s too early to tell how he will fare relative to his peers.

You might say money but a good gm finds a way out of these mistakes and if anything just says screw it put the good players in. Unfortunately yzerman feels absolutely no pressure from ownership, certainly no pressure from a large portion of the fanbase, and is free to just hold on to every single prospect and bad signing to where the wings will just sit in this malaise of mediocrity until someone comes up and shows out. But 5 years in if you are not even close to being a contender im sorry i do not care how rough the situation was, every single player, coach, etc. is only here because of him. The majority of what you said was great. But your conclusion is terrible. You think the wings have the 5th or 6th best prospect pool and that’s not good enough to show a strong future? Um. What? A) 5th or 6th best prospect pool out of 32 teams is fantastic, especially coming from where they were pre-Yzerman B) They were recently ranked #1 prospect pool so idk why you’ve put them at 5th or 6th. Ergo, this is a pretty good recap of the past but a terrible take on the wings’ future

Been saying it for a while: Yzerman is brutally overrated. He got lucky with drafts in tampa but his ability to sign free agents and manage his team is terrible.

@@michaelkeller5927 yea his drafting in Tampa is impossible to replicate Kucherov in the last 2nd and Point in the 3rd alone.

I'm going to be biased but it's hard to say that he got lucky with drafting when early on in his time as GM with Detroit, he reached for Seider who got rookie of the year, and is looking like a #1 defenceman on a future contender. Sure, luck definitely plays into it, but at some point, you have to give him credit for having an eye for good players. (And credit to the scouts as well)

@@MikeBartner He had different and better staff in Tampa advising him. In Detroit he has most of the same draft and player advisors as Holland did: Hakan Andersson, Draper, and Cleary.
