A Deep Dive into Danny Phantom's Undying Fandom

I think the reason this fandom is so popular is because the show touched on a lot of interesting lore, but never actually explained it. Like they describe Ember dying in a song, but never acknowledge it. They mention cores once and don’t really do anything with it after that. Two ghosts have a child and the show just… does not explain how that’s possible. Danny straight up defeats the Ghost King in one on one combat and they never really bring that up until the Yetis call him Great One like some kind of cult over it. His dad makes a device for translating ghost language - implying that there is a ghost language- and then Wulf speaks Esperanto. Also Danny does things like telekinesis and stuff that borders on body horror and then… never again. The Yetis hand Danny a map that can take him anywhere which they just… have. The Zone is shown to open portals throughout time and space which results only in funny hijinks. Danny and his friends are shown trying to map out the Ghost Zone as like… a background thing that’s happening. Oh yeah! And the main character is half dead because his “there was a great big flash, everything just changed, and his molecules got all rearranged!” Also one episode Sam is like “Omg. I killed my bff/crush. He’s dead, bc I dared him to go into the portal.” And Tucker wishes he could be a hero like Danny without really thinking about the implications. And the Box Ghost…. the *Box* Ghost. Also Desiree seems to be unable not to grant wishes for some reason. Ghost Writer has the OP ability to write anything about anything or anyone into existence like some kind of OP Death Note nonsense. Clockwork shows up and is just like “I’m Master of Time” Like sir? You are a ghost… or are you God? Are some ghosts Gods? What do you mean Master of time? What even are the Observants? Why are they above the Master of Time? How do Observants and Clockwork tie into Ghost Politics? Because there’s also a Ghost King, but then there’s the council of flying eyeballs. Oh! And there’s all these floating doors that are kind of like portals? Except not, because we see portals? Do they ever say what the doors are canonically? I’m not actually sure? Oh! And humans can go through walls and fly in the ghost zone. Bc why not? So like what? What is this? What is the lore? What is canon? It’s disconnected pieces of nonsense with just enough explanation to be somewhat coherent, but too much unanswered to actually make sense. This show sets up a lot of interesting plot and lore, but never actually does anything. So the Fanon just built off of it. Due to this, canon and Fanon fused together easily - because to even make sense of the show you have to make headcanons. There really isn’t any way around it due to the vague-yet-descriptive lore. Or rather elements of lore that the Canon threw at us and didn’t do anything with. Danny Phantom canon really do be like: (drops a big piece of lore with huge implications) Fandom: Oh? What’s this? Sounds cool. Elaborate? Canon: …. Fandom: *Elaborate????* Canon: 💨 Fandom: 😱 Fandom: (rolls up sleeves) Fanon: 🤗

There is an actual answer for the doors, they're each supposed to lead to a ghost's haunt. It's in the episode with the prison break.

@@haleyweninger5317 I know, but they never elaborate. How does that work? How does a ghost know where their door is? Does it move around? Can ghosts lock them? Can a ghost make their door disappear when they don't want someone to enter? How do ghosts' haunts develop/work? Does every haunt have a door? Is the portal like Danny's door or does Danny have his own door somewhere? Is entering the doors like stepping through a doorway or more of a bright flash of light and then being teleported? Are the doors considered portals? Do the doors go to anything other than haunts? You can canonically time travel through portals in the Zone. Do they take you to another part of the Zone or a pocket dimension? We don't really see anyone actually use these doors to visit a ghost, so the mechanics are up to interpretation. Which is exactly what I'm talking about. With so much left up to interpretation, the fandom has to fill in the blanks. There's so much to work with.

personally i'm in the belief that if danny ever came back to tv it would never be able to live up to the mammoth amount of self made lore the fans added that have osmosed into the show. It wouldn't be able to hold up a candle to what people have transformed it into. Danny Phantom has become a collective story made by thousands and millions of people, where people gather around a camp fire to delve deeper into lore the actual writer couldn't be bother to explore and even adding to the worldling that is amity park and the ghost zone. Everything people have added have made the show so interesting that the show almost pales in comparison, so much so that people are surprised its not as dark as the original source material. Plus the art, writing and reimagining of danny and friends are so dope and original that i sometimes prefer them over the original, such as the gasmask design. Danny Phantom isn't about the show anymore, its the collective story telling of people exploring a story premise and having fun with it.

If they ever do get around to making a reboot of DP I'm not worried even knowing that it likely would never live up to fan expectations. So many popular HCs that the fandom has comes from season 3, the most widely agreed upon worst season. The fandom would just cherry pick what they liked from the new show and make a whole bunch of new HCs that'll sustain us for another couple decades at least.

That...actually makes me hopeful. Ever since the graphic novel came out, Ive been worried that the show will be rebooted as the ideal Danny phantom. Not perfect but a better show. I've been so scared of this fandom being lost after that like how modern fandoms have a great show and just move on. But you're probably right. The phandom is too stubborn to stay dead.

A couple corrections and extras. 1. The protests actually started when it was announced the show would be cancelled at it's 53rd epsiode back on January 25, 2006 via Butch Hartman's Website Forums. Also, there is an image online of a poster held by David Kaufman at the ralies. The poster has a picture of Danny and says "Save Me" on it 2. The shipping drama was started not only by Butch Hartman on his forums & Zcat6 on the DP Online Forums, who was also a mod on the Danny Phamtom area on the Butch Hartman Forums 3. The sunburn thing is a reference to an interview Butch had with Zcat back in 2006 on the zcat's fanmade Forums asking why Danny had a shirt. Only back then he said he didn't know and only SUGGESTED that maybe he sunburns so easily but also maybe they just found it funny to put him in an oversized tanktop 4. The Short was not uploaded to Butch's channel, it was uploaded to Nickelodeon. Just written by Butch. The short is "The Fairly OddPhantom". A 2017 Danny Phantom & T.U.F.F. Puppy Crossover short featuring The Fairly OddParents made exclusively to promote Butch's last Nicktoon "Bunsen is a Beast". Bunsen lasted 1 year. 2017-2018 5. "Dan Phantom" is only refered to as such in the GBA Game because the game was based on eaelier documents, as most movie tie-in game are. In the episode itself he is called "Dark Danny", as seen in the end credits. Many fans know him as Dan because GBA Games were kinda popular in the 2000's and most people don't read end credits so people assumed that was his Final and official name 6. The Phandom has weird ship names because most of them were finalized in 2006. Back in the 2000's, Ship Names were generally more than just 2 character names (for example Sonamy for Sonic and Amy, and other modern ships) For example, Invader Zim Ship Names follow a special acronym system. The most popular one ZADR stands for Zim And Dib Relationship. There's also ZAGR, which can be either Zim and Gaz or Zim and Gir depending on how weird you are.

I am a fan from as early as 2005-2006 and I was around 10-11 years old. I would religiously watch this show as a kid and obsessively talk about this who ever bothered to listen. I researched existing episodes and wrote it down on a list so I know what episodes I missed or not. I was present in the fandom war but only a little naive to the controversy. I was not allowed to have an internet account just yet so I could not interact with the wider fandom. I only managed to create my own content around 12-13 years old. I am currently 28 years old and I always find myself returning to the fandom but this has been the biggest gap between my return since my last dip into the fandom was 6 years ago. The Phandom is a true phenomenon of cult classics because you can easily find stories that grab your interests or artists you resonate with. From serious ideas to memetic ones, I just find it fascinating how alive and well this fandom still is. I still have a passion and love for this show as I did back then and I am glad to see this being recorded. Also, Kaufman did go to the protests. I was not there but I saw a picture of him smiling with a Phan.

I ended up in the fandom through a very convoluted path. Looking for the miraculous “fan” comic Scarlet Lady, I ended up on tumblr, and I started looking through various miraculous Dan works. I ended up starting to go through the maribat (miraculous x dc/Batman) stuff, which led to me reading purely dc stuff, and then I started reading the dpxdc stuff. Wanting to understand several references, and not being able to picture things, I watched the show through reactions until I found a Google drive folder that contains all the official danny phantom stuff. …basically, I went looking for a miraculous ladybug comic, and ended up watching Danny phantom, and not through Danny phantom miraculous crossovers. Honestly, I love the phandom, and it’s inspired some stuff for my original work (I have a character with a horrifying backstory which includes getting her leg cut off, her eye pulled out, these getting regrown, and getting vivisected at one point, all whilst fully awake (to start), and the gain of the ability to heal injuries instantly isn’t the reason she’s hardly bothered by pain.)

This was a nice trip down memory lane. I’ve been in the fandom since the start and remember aaaaalll of this. Back in like 2013, I was active on a jokey little shitposting blog in the Tumblr fandom. I was going through a frame by frame image gallery for meme fodder one day and found an image I thought was funny of an animation error. I posted it on Tumblr with the caption “heard that u were talking shit.” A fellow Tumblr user expanded upon it by making spamming the image an annual event akin to the Mishapocalypse. You know exactly what meme I’m talking about. Other blogs popped up. It became inescapable. I’ll never escape what I have done by putting that face on Tumblr. But I’m weirdly proud. It’s amazing how the Tumblr fandom had such a comraderie, so much so that one of our stupid memes ended up on official merch. I have the pin that was released of it. It still makes me smile. Edit: I wrote this after the history section. I just hit fandom events. Confirming it was narwhalsarefalling who started the event, and I believe it started around 2014-2015. I went inactive on Tumblr around 2016-2017 for the most part but the Dannypocalypse had already started.

I am 26 years old and I still remember watching the PREMIERE of Danny Phantom back in 2004, sitting on the floor of the house my great-grandparents had just moved into. I would keep up with premieres of big event episodes and watch them, just like adults do their favorite shows. (Those who still watch broadcast television.) I was SUPER serious about it. I was in the Danny Phantom community that formed on DeviantArt in 2011, and hearing "Amethyst Ocean" again sent me blasting into the past. Holy shit. Edit: further, I can tell you, shipping used to be a WAAAY bigger thing in this fandom long before now. I am asexual but I'm not aromantic. (More specifically I am aegosexual.) I was incredibly fixated on the Danny and Sam ship back in 2011 and 2012. The shipping was concentrated on DeviantArt, and the Amethyst Ocean DeviantArt group. That window of time felt SO much longer when I was that age than I now know it was. As someone who was "there when it was written," I could probably tell you a lot about Danny Phantom and its fandom that you didn't know, but this did still tell me some fanon stuff I didn't know, because I've always been extremely discerning about indulging any fanon stuff.

Excellent video. It's crazy how DP is still going so strong! I agree that it feels like the fandom is more popular than the actual show, and I always go back on forth on whether or not I like the show proper more or just it's concept. But lately I've given a few episodes a rewatch and it holds up a lot better than I gave it credit for. Also the saga of watching how long it took you to make this video was an unintentional highlight of this video.

Wow thats shocking to hear about people not focusing on ships anymore bc when I was growing up, that's pretty much all there was - DP ships were announced on profiles. Ships were like the first thing phans mentioned to each other when they met. Certain people would block/harass other people or entire groups for shipping something they hated. ships always had to be declared in stories or they'd get hate comments for not stating it up front. In fics, you couldn't escape ship content no matter how many pages you'd sift through. Fascinating to hear that there's content out there that isn't ship oriented now, that's honestly so much better. One of the reasons I started distancing myself from the fandom years ago was the ships

Saw your post on tumblr about this video and finally checked it out. I was around ever since the start of the show, especially since I was close to the same age as Danny when the show started and also, you know the whole I didn't know I was trans yet and wondered why the hell the show clicked with me so hard hmmm big think emoji, and seeing how this group of dedicated cartoon lovers has just...never left? Fucking wild. And so much shit that everyone just accepts as being canon is actually stuff everyone just made up and agreed it was real is amazing. I honestly...don't think I've seen this happen with anything else. It's incredible. I still remember eating my Danny Phantom SpaghettiO's reading fanfiction in high school. Oh I remember the anti-fan/true fan shit. It was wild. I actually made a stamp on deviant art that said something along the lines of "anti-fan, true-fan? who gives a flying shit! I just wanna watch my DANNY PHANTOM" or something. I actually got hate for that. It was pretty hilarious. Self declared true-fans would even attack people simply for drawing fanart in any style that wasnt the style of the show. Like...why? I dunno. Funny to look back on. No one hates Bitch Fartman more than Danny Phantom fans. And I just love that.

I remember britt britt's protest chain! I remember pompep scarring me as a kid/teen because it was so vile. True fans are pretty much always insane, but in this fandom they had an extra dose of crazy. Its wild to hear its still active on tumblr bc I was never on tumblr much. But I remember the hayday of the fandom being active on DA, FF and FB. The biggest side of the fanwar I recall was the intense harassment/bullying from DxS shippers against all other ships. I and several of my friends experienced a lot of harassment just from shipping literally anything else and trying to exist in the same space - insane. Ooo I remember Wes Weston!! PhannieMay was awesome!! Fascinating to hear about the cores and obsession fanon because I forgot cores were actually canon lol I love hearing people's take on the lore

⚪🔵🟢 I just found your video the other day I really enjoyed it I'm happy that the Danny phantom phantom is something that doesn't seem real toxic And that we do get a lot of amazing crossovers one of the crossovers that's gotten me back into Danny phantom is the nicktoons crossover stuff are in comics being done by izbubbles I really love alot of the fannon stuff I see I've been getting back in to drawing Danny my self now aday It's fun to see all the head canons and stuff people have for Danny and people doing different fanfics I also like when I go on Tumblr and I see the different events and stuff for Danny trending I'm glad all of the fans collectively nowadays don't hang on every word Butch Hartman has to say and we all collectively agree that he's just someone we are not going to associate with Danny phantom anymore especially with a lot of his behavior that's come out over the years I also got a chance to read a glitch in time it was good we're supposed to be getting the next comic at the end of this year are in the following year I do hope one day maybe if Danny phantom comes back it'll just be somebody ignoring phantom planet all together and picking up on story lines that were just love open-ended in the show like we're going to ignore phantom planet all together Or maybe just pick up where the graphic novel that's currently out is going from But I've been seeing a lot of reboots for stuff so I don't really know how I would feel about it Danny phantom reboot I just got to reboot comic for one of my favorite w.i.t.c.h. And it wasn't exactly great like no one liked it I did a lot of whitewashing and change the characters abilities and personality so much that it was just a real let down and upset a lot of people including myself so I don't know how I would feel about a reboot and like you said there's so much more that even if someone who was a fan in the fandom right now in New all or more and if the different , a used and things that we've all made for the series I think they will be parts that will be left out that would just upset people in different ways and would be unsatisfied that all the stuff we would want wouldn't fully recovered like we hope so I don't know how to reboot even if it was from a fan who cared what really do I mean a glitch in time is doing pretty good cuz it's kind of fixing what phantom planet messed up and we're all thankful for that But I'm not sure how full reboot series would go I'm happy to see that there are still a lot of Danny phantom fans especially on KZbin who make videos about it I hope to see more in the future 😅

Uh, the jump from "in this particular platform most fics are tagged gen" and "most people in this fandom are ace" is wild. 1. AO3 is not the biggest platform, in fact things like angst day were created because of the abundance of het shippy danny/sam or danny/ofc fics in the fandom, on FFN. 2. GEN is a genre tag. Just because a person writes genfic (or rather, tags its fic as gen, no the same) doesn't mean THEY are PERSONALLY ace. Same as a person writing shipfic doesn't make them not ace.

Someone can not be asexual and still write asexual stories! Also, to my knowledge some of the actual research goes into other fanfiction websites. AO3 is just the easiest one to use because it's the one that most people outside of fandom spaces know of, and the easiest to get data from.

I used to fervently avoid reading comics coz I found them hard to get into. Then DPxDC blew up, I started reading the crossover fanfic on tumblr, then on ao3, and then I started on the non-crossover DC fanfics and now I'm actually considering starting trying to read the comics. Not read much at this point, but some of them have actually been easy enough to follow along with without me constantly going "OK but who on earth is this?" Whenever a lesser known hero or secret identity or character shows up.

Thank you for your work I am a huge fan of the show and many great fiction works I get people getting angry about Pompous*** couse well it's sickening but to be fair ther is a multum of these kinda of ships within many fandoms and 103 and fictionsites are free to post whatever they want and it's partaly why they thrive so making restrictions poses the danger of the end of these kind of sites I just avoid those and am on my way... I don't get te canon thing though it's fiction you can make what you want It's not about moral purity but more basic morals 14 year old and and a guy in his 40's show in a positive light well You need to be twisted to find that OK

hi there, thank you for the feedback! i'm sorry for that joke. you are right, ignoring ships that make me uncomfortable but making a joke about religion can be pretty cringe. i'm a catholic myself, and my comment on it being "cringe" was more of my own reaction to the idea that things like autism/neurodivergence can be healed through prayer, even though autism cannot be "healed" or does not require fixing, not that the act of turning to prayer/belief itself during hard times is cringe. i don't see this comment as blasting hate on me at all, it's definitely something that i should be more careful to talk about in the future. i'm gonna try and go through and cut it out with youtube's video editor. again thank you for the feedback, and again, i really apologize for the upsetting joke.

I just couldn't believe the standards that were seeming to be displayed of pedophilia ships being whatever and religion being cringe. It just boggled my mind and felt like a bad message to be putting out, not just in general but also for your own image. 😂 Last thing I'd want is for you to get like, FBI swatted or something for seeming chill with pedo ships or worse, blasted by overly religious nuts. I have a lot of people in my family with autism, so I get it. But I also get people wanting to "fix" it. Since it is literally a mutation of the persons brain that messes with them in several ways which can make their lives harder and also impact the lives of those around them. So it can go either way, where those with it may feel fine and not see an issue. Or they may hate it and wish they weren't autistic since it can make their lives harder and make them have to work harder to fit in or be understood by others, or drive a car, or even just go outside without having a problem.
