The last few years have been kind of a Turrican renaissance. Loved the feature. If you Turricans, you have to give Gunlord X a shot. You’ll fall in love. Another Turrican inspired game that was actually ‘lost code’ for decades was released a few years ago. It’s called Ultracore and it’s Turrican to the core. A bit dull, but worth collecting. Finally, Valfaris is what would’ve happened if Turrican carried on, perhaps as a Sega Saturn game. It’s one of the all time greats. Look forward to your thoughts on them.

"It many ways it's quite visibly out of date". I never expected your glow up to be thematically tied to a Turrican essay but it's wonderful.

Glad to hear it.

I didn't even know some of these existed!! The Java rabbithole was a trip, but the Super Famicom exclusive is so technically impressive I'm amazed I had to find out about it through this video, it's baffling that it's not that talked about in retro circles or SNES aficionados. Also, I never tried the Commodore stuff, but it looks so fluid and over the top. They must have used all kinds of black magic to make it work on a C64. Great video 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Thank you for getting me into Europlatformers,,, and European games in general. I've been watching your stuff for like six years, and you're still the only person on KZbin I've seen who gives them any particular attention. It's a shame. They have such a particular flavor to them that's so over-the-top in a good way. I wish I hadn't overlooked them for so long. Like two thirds of the Atari Jaguar's library is aggressively European, and it's been my sole hyperfixation for like two months now.

Always great to hear you talk about Turrican. Thanks for teaching me things I didn't know. Maybe I was missing something, but did you ever make a Turrican Retrospective series conclusion, which you hinted on in your fm2 review look at Super Turrican 2?
@lunamorley Жыл бұрын
I kept trying to write it but was never satisfied with the script. That said, this video covered pretty much everything I was going to cover there. Frankly, I kinda look at this video and the video on the collections I did last year to be kind of a redo of the Turrican Retrospective.

Loved it ! Maybe someday, a build of Turrican 3D will leak on the net... I guess you will be covering the fan games next ? (Hurrican, T2002, T4 Funeral ^^) I played so much of the Amstrad CPC Turrican versions (that's all I had back then). I strongly prefer the first one on CPC, despite how slow it is (now with CPCEC emulator you can overclock the hardware and it runs super smoothly !). The devs of Turrican 2 for the CPC said that this is the biggest game ever ported on the system, they compressed 4 Mb from the Atari ST version to two little disks of 128 kb each.

Oh man, a girl can dream. I'd love to play the prototype of Turrican Cyclone and Thornado while we're at it. Also yes, I'm thinking next time I'll be talking about the fangames. Neat info on the CPC stuff!

On the turrican documentary that came out with the anthology collectors editions, they say they have builds but they’re not playable as they’re from really early dev kits of consoles that aren’t to be found anywhere or something like that

@@Mingodough The GameCube prototype of Thornado is forever lost, so at least the PC footage in the documentary was quite the surprise ! To think I’d finally see a bit of this game, after all this time…

eh, Turrican II on CPC Is my fave 8 bit version and one I still play to this day. My only real crit (apart from the smaller window) is why was he green when blues/grey was right there. I did an edit a few years ago of what the sprite could look like with those colours and not sure why they didn't use them. Of course my overall fave version is the Amiga. But yeah, love the CPC port and yeah the chunky colourful pixels make it fun for me too. The C64 versions are smooth but I just don't find them very enjoyable to play and the rather drab colours always gave me the feelings of a rainy bank holiday afternoon. :P

I had no idea Java Turrican games exited, and all those bootlegs, then again..even today appstores have assets and characters ripped straight out of Crash Bandicoot etc...

You should. It's a lot of fun. Definitely one of the better SNES shooters out there.

Very well researched and enjoyable video, thank you! I was on the verge of buying a M65 on ebay, too, but decided against it in the end.
