As a Korean, everything he does is so offensive. He is basically defining us just by our looks by getting “Korean nose and eyes and nips”. He makes no effort on actually learning about our culture and history. Just because he can say a botched introduction of himself does not mean that he has learned the language. If i bleach my hair and wear blue contact lense, does that make me a white person? He is so delusional to the point where his actions are harmful. He has no respect for Koreans at all. Ollie, you are not Korean. You are just delusional, get help. If u really want to be Korean, you can take a very difficult naturalization exam to give up your citizenship in uk and become a Korean citizen as many foreigners who truly love Korea have done so. If you are not going to put in that effort, then stop saying you’re Korean.

Exactly. He doesn't put any effort in to actually learn Korean culture and language and he acts like it's a big joke. He also makes things hard for people who are actually genuinely interested in Korean culture or who are mixed race or anything similar. I've been really interested in Korean language and culture for years and have actually put the effort in to get to where i'm about intermediate in the language now and I understand a lot of cultural norms/mannerisms/history/etc as well as do work with Korean businesses and live in a predominately Korean populated area. But because of people like him i'll get people online telling me that I'm pretending to be Korean simply for using the language or wearing Korean fashion trends despite me saying what my background is and not claiming to be any other race, and also having actively participated in stuff like stop asian hate protests, which we all know Oli isn't doing anything to be helpful and uplift Asians. I'm also multiracial (american native and white mixed) being that native americans originate from east asia our facial features are often similar. I've had people literally accuse me of faking my features or getting plastic surgery and assuming that i'm just white despite me being a legitimately mixed person. I know other mixed people who've had this experience. There's even a half Korean half black girl I know who was raised in Seoul and very clearly has Korean features as well as a Korean name, and yet some people would accuse her of faking it to. Korean is her native language and everything. People like Oli London make a mockery of other cultures and actively harm mixed race people because so often now people assume mixed people are just faking it due to people like this.

They don’t seem to understand they can live in Korea, learn Korean culture, even participate if invited and that would 1000% more welcomed than what they are doing. I’ve seen white people do this with black culture. They always become caricatures of the culture they want to claim. Getting huge lips with fillers and botched bbl’s when black people all look different. I imagine it’s the same for Koreans when he says “Korean nose” it’s just whatever stereotype of a Korean nose they believe in. Edit: got to the parts about pronouns and changed to they/them

It's so frustrating that he reduces Korean culture to KPop and KDramas! Real life is nothing like that! If he ACTUALLY wanted to learn about Korean culture, he'd live in a normal apartment in Korea, get a job at a supermarket or something, speak only Korean every day at that job, and learn about the REAL lives of REAL Koreans! If he really cared, he would learn about Korean laws and Korean history. He'd learn about the Korean educational system. He'd learn about the intergenerational tension that comes from being a very recently modernized society. Imagine if someone from another race in another country claimed to be African American because they wore a wig, died their skin darker, listened to Beyonce, and memorized a one-page-long list of English travel phrases. A perfect example of an actual youtube who is showing their appreciation for the Korean culture, who's lived there, speaks Korean fluently, eats and cooks Korean food, shares the history and awareness of Korean culture to his channel, from the perspective of being from the UK and not claiming to be Korean, is The Korean Englishman. The youtuber and channel is a great example of showing and informing people who watch and people they invite on the channel to eat Korean food and doing something Korean while also having been part of the culture, what real cultural appreciation is. He's not claiming he's Korean or Asian. He's not going to great lengths to change his appearance. I genuinely cannot tell if I’m attracted to someone and want to have sex with them, want to look like them, or both, or neither and it’s something else entirely. That sounds kinda normal. I think it’s some Freudian/Jungian shit. You’re either attracted to the person because they remind you of your *ideal* self you aspire to be, or because they remind you of your parent who is also someone you may subconsciously aspire to be. Essentially you’re idolizing them and you can choose to pursue becoming like them, dating them, or neither. You have to decide what’s best. If they’re really inspirational, I say try a bit of both, maybe you’ll become a better person

the sad thing about this is they want to marry their idol, but can't; so they try to become what they love. This is always so sad to me, because I know exactly how it feels. I have seen people who're so amazing, that I want them to be mine. Sometimes I eventually realize "I can never be with this person" - so I try to be them. The thought process is: if everyone loves this person (including me), then maybe people will love me too. Clout chasing is one thing, but that emotional coping mechanism hurts more painful than heartbreak.
@decrepitgirl

Props to you for at least being aware of it. So many people do it without even realizing. I'd say it's even sadder when one tries to copy somebody well known, cause then it's obvious to everyone what they are trying to do and the risk of getting mocked is higher (literally the opposite of the desired effect). It's hard to accept that (as far as we know) we only live once and we are stuck with ourselves, even if we are not satisfied with it. Figuring out how to become the best we can be is an ongoing journey whose sufficiently happy end is never guaranteed. So it seems to be very appealing to just internalize other people's strategies that seem to work for them in our own life. It's like starting a popular diet though: you want quick results so you don't put the effort it's actually required to create life changing results, you try it for a while but ultimately it wasn't made for you so you give up feeling discouraged and disappointed. One's focus should always be on ourselves without comparing who we are to others, that's how we can notice if we made any progress.

The problem with his cultural coming out is culture is not genetically controlled. It’s a social construct but one that is on a different level then the biological sex vs gender identity. Gender identity is based on biological aspects and because genetics is such a lottery it is possible for a person to have a gender identity that is very different to what their body suggests. Culture is completely separate from biology and genetics. It’s a set of traditions, language and behaviour that a group of people have developed over a very long time. The woman in the video is correct. To truly have a transracial (the way that Ollie sees it- as others have said it exists within adoption). Everyone would be able to swap and adopt whatever culture they wanted. But at this point that’s not possible. There is too much negative history, prejudice and privilege that has to be worked through as a society before we get to that point. Who knows even if we can get to that point but we aren’t there now. So he needs to stick to just being a English person who loves Korean culture. But he won’t unfortunately.
@mackie911
@mackie911 Жыл бұрын
But isn't the argument of the gender Vs sex discussion, that gender is just a social construct and sex is the biological aspect? I'm not trans or gender dysphoric so I can't speak in the inner workings of the issue. from an outside view point I do struggle with separating transgender and "transracial" from a pure argumentative standpoint. That does not mean I agree with Ollie or think it's good what they're doing at all. But if you take out opinion and emotion, the arguments (I've heard so far!) don't support one more than the other. I would like to hear valid arguments though how one is more valid than the other (people take offense to both, sex and race are both genetically predetermined (intersex excluded) so those arguments don't hold water). There's an interesting episode of "Atlanta" touching on the subject.
@YukiLeiu
@YukiLeiu Жыл бұрын
@@mackie911 the difference between people getting offended by transgender and transracial is the people who are offended by someone’s gender are the oppressors. They are actively causing harm cause they’re miseducated (autocorrect wanted to say miserable instead and that’s also not wrong) in both gender and sex, and the English language itself. Trans people know we can’t change our sex, sex and gender are different. Gender is a social construct in the way of the stereotype but how you percipient your gender is part of who you are from both predetermined genetics and how you were raised. Transracial the way oli explains it is racism. Where they are the oppressor, quite literally since they’re white af, they’re causing harm from again a place of misinformation. You can change your nationality which if that is what they were doing no one would care but you can’t change your race or ethnicity no matter how much you try. For ethnicity it isn’t genetic or inherent but you can’t go back in time and change how you’re raised. Transracial is only valid in the fact of adoptees being of a different race to their adoptive parents.

@@YukiLeiu thank you for the insight and point of view! Though I don't necessarily agree with every point made (eg. stereotyping them being white as being tied to them being the oppressor, though I do understand what you mean in regards to the subject itself),I do appreciate the conversation. As I'm not part of the group(s) they're affecting directly, it's not my place to defend or get offended over. Our society is changing so fast and we are learning so much more about psychology and social constructs, that I do feel like I want to have a less emotional and more rational discussion about touchy subjects as this.

@@mackie911 @Ghostlytime Sorry I've had an emotionally exhausting 3 days (that's life for you) and could not bring myself to answer at the time and had no energy. But I read your reply and I agree its important to address and learn about topics we don't understand and do it in a way where opinion and emotions are taken out (or nothing gets done). Your question about the argument of gender v sex as a social construct and how I pointed out that culture is also a social construct. Thanks to Ghostlytime (thank you for your insight) you had your confusion cleared up and I would like to add to it. Biology is the blueprint for almost all aspects of our understanding. It sets the standard for our stereotypes and how most people see the world. Its also extremely difficult to change our biology. It has informed our norms hence the "all men are strong and all women are emotional" idea. (Because a lot of men have hormones that makes them stronger than women, and a lot of women have a heightened emotional awareness through their hormones) But biology is also a lottery it is not perfect and it is not a guarantee. So not all men are strong and not all women are emotional. Instead each person is completely unique This is where the social construct comes in. Over thousands of years rules and traditions have been set up to make our society work. While they seem perfect or based on biological facts. They are not and constantly change. Its just that the constant change is on the scale of decades not days or years and is hard for me a person to see it happening. If you are a person that doesn't know or learn about history its even harder to see that change. Hundreds of years ago Knights wore pink because it symbolised blood and strength to them, women wore blue because it was seen as heavenly and close to god. Today boys are stereotypically dressed in blue and girls in pink because of a change in our societal construct that happened over hundreds of years. How does this apply to transgender and gender as a whole. Note I am not trans myself and do not have personal understanding of the difficulties that people who have to struggle through this but I have asked questions, listened and read. It seems to boil down to something like this: A trans persons biological sex and their (spirit/soul/personality/identity- chose what ever word you want here) (socially constructed) gender disagree and they want to make changes to be comfortable within their own body. They are not denying biological facts because (at this point) genes cannot be changed but they want to live as the gender they feel comfortable as. Yes sometimes that means making changes to the body - but that's their choice to make not mine. Keep listening to and asking trans people questions as they are the best people to help you understand. I may be way off. How does culture and transracialism come into it. Why can't Oli change his race without upsetting a lot of people? Short answer A LOOOOOOT OF HISTORICAL BAGGAGE. A culture on the smallest of scales is when a group of people make a set of rules, language and traditions that only people in that group know about or practice. Think of your family compared to your friends family, then compare to mine or a family in Zimbabwe. Each of our family's make up rules, language and traditions that only your family understand. It is not linked to biology, yet. Hence why my original comment said culture is not biologically linked but socially constructed. It becomes biological over a very long time. (think thousands of years) As people in that original group marry and bring up their children following those rules, traditions and language. Overtime certain biological traits start occurring in the group. It sometimes becomes possible to pick out someone's culture by what they look like. Now if we stopped here at our understanding of culture then what Oli is doing is not wrong. BUT what makes it wrong is when we recognise the effect of history, power and privilege. There are thousands of years of imbalance, prejudice and hatred between cultures and IF you superficially jump from one to the other (like Oli) then it makes all of that moot. Throws the suffering, the trauma and the fight out the window and feels like he is spitting in everyone's face. Not to mention a random Korean person probably cannot easily make the jump the other way. Like he feels he can. Essentially while transgender and transracial ideas seem very similar and related, i.e. "why can they change their gender and be celebrated but I cannot change my race... and if I do I am a target for vitriol and hatred". They are not and have to be treated as two very different things. About the "White oppressor" factor, and how you are uncomfortable with it. You are right Ghostlytime and I made some grand assumptions about Oli and his choices. He likely means well and it has nothing to do with his whiteness. The simple fact is in history white people did MANY terrible things and as a descendant (I am white) I have benefitted in some way from those acts. (I live in Australia, a land taken away from the original owners by legal decree). While I am personally not guilty, I try my hardest to support minorities around me and learn about their struggles and use my privilege (as a teacher) to benefit them. I am assuming that you are White which is why it makes you uncomfortable to be pointed to as a bad thing. (If not I am sorry, and try to take this as general life advice). Some of the best things we can do as white people is learn, listen and acknowledge that bad things happened and genuinely try to be better as humans. Assigning guilt or retroactive punishment does nothing but distract from fixing the problem and becoming a better society. I applaud your questioning and desire to learn and to do it while leaving emotions and opinions out of it all. That is sometimes the only way we actually learn, grow and change. Keep that curiosity alive and be a lifelong learner. Hope I haven't overwhelmed you with my comment. Like everything to do with humans the topic is so much more complex then it seems at first. I have never accepted "just because" as an answer and tell my students to never accept it either. I tell them that if I as their teacher/adult cannot explain myself with evidence or reasons then they need to question me further to see if I might be lying, saying my opinion or even just lording over them for power. It keeps me on my toes.

@@YukiLeiu Ok so the argument your making is if somebody is offended by a transgender they are the oppressor. However since I'm offended by transracials they are the oppressor not me. Yet you do nothing to argue why it's ok to change gender because it's a social construct, and not culture which is also a social construct. I personally don't give a fuck about either let people do what they want to do as long as it's not actually hurting anyone, but your argument makes no sense when held up to any logical examination.

So the term transracial actually does exist before this, it refers to an orphan of one race being adopted by another race. The official definition is : Interracial adoption refers to the act of placing a child of one racial or ethnic group with adoptive parents of another racial or ethnic group. Not to mention there actually is a term for the kind of transracial oli is, transracial identity the definition for that term is: Transracial people identify as a different race than the one associated with their biological ancestry. They may adjust their appearance to make themselves look more like that race, and they may participate in activities associated with that race. Yay research
