From experience, I totally agree with going to the dentist and having a dental hygienist clean and polish your teeth to remove any stains. During your visit ask the dentist or hygienist what you can do to prevent the staining. Maybe you need to stop or cut down on drinking dark soft drinks or coffee with cream and sugar. They might even say you can continue to drink and eat as before but you need to brush differently or with a different type of brush or toothpaste. I was getting stains on the inside of my bottom front 4 teeth (the 4 between the canines) from drinking coffee with cream and sugar. I was able to continue drinking coffee with cream and sugar but I needed to brush my teeth 20 to 30 minutes after I was done drinking and if for some reason I wasn't able to brush them, I was told to rinse and swoosh my mouth with warm water immediately after I was done drinking my coffe to help dissolve and spit out the remaining sugar in my mouth. Both the brushing and rinsing with warm water took care of the issue. I would avoid using whitening toothpaste, but if you decide to use it, only use it for a week or two. If the stain doesn't go away during this time, discontinue using it and go see a dental hygienist. Whitening toothpaste will wear away your enamel after using it for a long time. If you wear away your enamel, you will have yellowish/brown teeth. Not a good look.

The addition of milk makes coffee stain less
@bernardocisneros44024 ай бұрын
@@LiliS319 That's not what I was told by my dentist. He said the best way to drink coffee to avoid stains is "black" no milk, no cream, and not sugar. I didn't ask about the milk but I'm assuming it's the lactose in milk. Lactose is a sugar.
@LiliS3194 ай бұрын
@@bernardocisneros4402 the idea is that the milk proteins bind to the polyphenols (the stuff in coffee that causes staining), so it doesn't attach to the teeth as much. But I think I see where the disconnect may be. You're american right? I think americans when they say coffee they mean the watered down stuff, (~americano). Europeans generally don't consume watered down coffee, of course it may vary but it's not a drink of choice in most countries here that I'm aware of. When we think of coffee it's either a shot of espresso or a shot of espresso with some amount of steamed milk and/or foam. You don't need a doctor to see how disgustingly a shot of fresh espresso stains teeth and tongue compared to a cappucino, but I'm sure it's just a matter of how much you water down the coffee wherer it stains even less.
@bernardocisneros44024 ай бұрын
@@LiliS319 Yes, I'm American and drink the watered down version. My sister drinks the cappuccinos and espressos. They are too strong for me. My coffee is like lightly muddied water compared to the mud my sister drinks, but she enjoys them.

Crest whitestrips did more to whiten my teeth in 3 weeks than a near lifetime of whitening toothpaste did any way.

I live in the UK and I find many tooth pastes, especially whitening ones, give me sore dry chapped lips. My skin must be sensitive to a particular ingredient and when I brush I usually get alot of toothpaste foam around my lips. So I had to be really careful about which brand and which type I choose. Unless you drink alot of coffee, black tea, or red wine, you typically don't develop enough stain to need a whitening toothpaste, as most toothpastes are capable of removing small amounts of surface stain. Originally, this style of toothpaste was marketed towards smokers and coffee drinkers. Topol was the first big one in the US that I remember back in the 80's, but Rembrandt was the first one that started the whitening fad. Probably because Topol had a reputation of being very abrasive, whereas Rebrandt was alot milder.

Stannous fluoride kills bacteria, but is there a concern that it will kill "good" bacteria? I think of the advice to avoid using antibacterial soap for regular handwashing. Is that also a thing with the mouth? I've also heard to avoid rinsing after brushing, to let the fluoride linger on the surface of the teeth for longer and have a better effect. I've tried this, spitting out as much of the slurry as I can, but I think I'm inevitably swallowing a trace amount of toothpaste. Is there an increased concern about this with stannous fluoride and the suggestions to avoid ingestion, or would the amount be so minimal as to not really matter?

From my experience, I would recommend Colgate Optic White Advanced as it uses low amounts of Hydrogen Peroxide (2%) and monofluorphosphate, which is designed to be safe for daily use. I had sensitive teeth before using it, and after two weeks I stopped having any issues with it and my teeth have definitely brightened somewhat. (I'm on week 4/5 out of the six they recommend to get the best results.) There are some other versions of their lineup called Renewal (3%) and Pro Series (5%,) which only change how much Hydrogen Peroxide they use. They also tend to get a lot more expensive for the same amount of toothpaste, so that's why I recommend the first one as you can get a two-pack or three-pack for about $10 at most places.

Say I use crest strips to whitening my teeth, what would you suggest in between for surface stains? A rinse or toothpaste?
@drtyler20754 жыл бұрын
White Strips work pretty well. They have the same active ingredient that some "professional" whitening gels have, just at a lower percentage, so they might work a little slower. Toothpaste might work on the stain between your teeth, but that might be tartar, which will need to be scraped by a hygienist. I don't think the mouthwashes do anything. They have some peroxide in them, but probably too low a dose to actually be effective

@drtyler20754 жыл бұрын
Colgate Total SF has stannous fluoride which should help with sensitivity. Honestly, mouthwashes don't do that much. I'm skeptical that any of the whitening mouthwashes will be effective enough for you to notice a difference. If you get a lot of cavities, you might benefit from a fluoride mouthwash, and if you have a dry mouth, mouthwashes can be helpful. Other than that, they are not nearly as important as brushing and flossing

@@tigasport I think Neem is more interesting than oil pulling. Neem has shown to be a good antimicrobial, which is helpful in preventing gingivitis. It doesn't have the benefits of fluoride that make teeth more resistant to break down, but it could be a great alternative to triclosan as an additive to a fluoride toothpaste. There is some evidence that oil pulling can reduce plaque levels, but the studies I've read suggest that effect could just be from the mechanical swishing. Brushing normally will be just as effective at removing plaque and take way less time

Unfortunately, I don't know of any toothpaste that combines stannous fluoride and potassium nitrate, but if you're looking for help with sensitivity and gingivitis, a stannous fluoride toothpaste might be good for you.
