I am 50. I was diagnosed with RA about 8 years ago. I drink a gallon of water every day, I try to exercise for at least 30 minutes daily, majority of my diet is plant based, and I have eliminated ALL of the refined junk I was addicted to (sugar) for many years. I no longer have any joint pain. I use to ache so badly all over my body. Again... As long as I maintain the disciplines listed above I am totally pain free. I just had my annual well women exam. My RA number was 41.7 (from my labs) when I was initially diagnosed almost 8 years ago my RA number was 13. However even with the higher number I do not have any more joint pain due to a major life style change. I refused all meds when I was diagnosed. My Rheumatologist was extremely aggressive in her pursuit to get me on a cocktail of meds. But I've never taken any of the RA drugs. God bless you all as you seek out the best options for your unique needs. As we all know there isn't a 'one size fits all' remedy. Take care🙏🏽

I am envious of your success. I've had RA for 20+ years, and have taken various medications over the years, but currently my most recent medicine has stopped working, so am trying to figure out what to do. Two years ago, I did most of the things that you wrote: exercise 30-60 minutes a day, eliminate almost all processed foods and refined sugars. Almost no carbs and certainly no grains or processed foods. But in my case, my current flare is as bad as ever with my CRP through the roof. I'm not going to give up on this diet and exercise, but for me personally, it will be something I do in addition to meds rather than in place of it. I hope you continue to be symptom-free!

I got RA, as a result of Lyme Disease, when I was 27 years old. My mother encouraged me to do a 2 week detox (The Master Cleanse). I did it and also decided to go fully vegan. The RA went fully into remission in less than a year and stayed gone for about 25+ years after, even though I went back to *eating flesh after about 3 and a half years (*I didn't eat red meat). Sadly, I got bitten by cow tick on a visit to the Caribbean, in 2020, and, BOOM, just like that it came back! Now I'm beginning to have disfigurement in my fingers. The pain is chronic, the flare-ups awful. It's more challenging for me to go fully vegan now. I did try and saw improvements, but haven't been disciplined enough to stay vegan, even though I'm eating mostly plant-based. I avoid the nightshades (Irish potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, bell peppers, etc.,) like the plague, even though I love them. They are good for you but not when this disease is present. They aggravate it. I've also eliminated regular whole wheat bread; I use Ezekiel Bread instead. Also, I find using plain cocoa/cacao powder in plant-based milks (soy-free), with pure maple syrup, gives me my 'chocolate' and sugar fix without any ill-effect. I should say that I had no joint disfigurement prior to the diet (those 25+ years ago); only they were swollen, warm, and EXTREMELY painful. I could barely walk. Because I did the detox first, it eliminated my cravings, which made it easier. Also I was terrified of the pain. I'd pretty much try anything at the time.😄 (Also, I had a chocolate addiction).

Wouldn’t these individual foods be more related to gut impermeability? If you have leaky gut, you will react to foods that aren’t actually a problem for you… right? I think gut health is a big miss in this study.
@steve6375
@steve6375 Жыл бұрын
The foods that are eliminated are the ones that may cause a leaky gut in some people - that's the whole point. It may not be that the foods cause an immune reaction, it may be that the foods cause a leaky gut which then allows 'stuff' to pass through the gut lining and produces an immune response. It may also be that some foods are digested by your gut bacteria which then excrete substances which irritate your gut. In the Mediterranean, the old cooks used to remove the skin and seeds from tomatoes and cucumbers and would make bread using sourdough so that the gluten is fully destroyed by the bacteria. These days we just make bubbles in gluten-enriched bread using pure yeast for 30 minutes and then we eat raw gluten. Nature has put toxic chemicals in seeds to prevent animals and insects from eating them or chewing them. Grains are not well tolerated by animals either.

Try the AIP diet plan. You start by eliminating all potential foodstuffs which may irritate the gut. Then (if your symptoms improve in next 6-8 weeks or sooner) you can slowly start to reintroduce various foodstuffs. With an autoimmune disease, your body is reacting to something that you ingest. Avoid all processed foods simply because you cannot tell what is in them.

Started with leg cramps every night for about 4 daysthen, plantar fasciitis plus pain all over my feet. Initially, I thought my back is out of alignment so a chiropractic adjustment 3 times a day and as the plantar fasciitis was getting gradually better I noticed that my body is being attacked by something all over my body so I gooled the symptoms. Autoimmune disease and one in particular was fibromyalgia but the lab result came back with a positive RA at 80 and I was devastated. I changed my diet completely, going on 3weeks now, and I have less flare ups currently. I will see a RA specialist in 6 weeks and I will fight to get my inflammation down so that I don't need to deal with the drugs. I know I consumed too many bakery goods everyday prior to flare ups and going forward, I definitely will not eat desserts.

Considering I’m mostly plant based, zero refined sugar, no dairy, eggs or meat other than fish. Reduced lectins and oxilates. Active lifestyle prior to diagnosis and continue to get out on walks daily. On methotrexate, which made me very I’ll over time, now on Simponi 6 weeks. Still have huge aches in most joints. If you're taking a weekly injection of methotrexate, you are taking a very dangerous med which can give you ulcers in your stomach and mouth, and it can seriously damage your liver and you have to be tested monthly. I DON'T CALL THAT A SUCCESS un route if your strict diet and your $100 lb. weight loss. Both the diet and the methotrexate are very bad for your health.

Plenty of lists if you google AIP allowed foods. But the point is that the 2nd stage reintroduces most of the forbidden foods back into your diet until you hit one that brings on a flare up again.

I have eliminated all grains (not just wheat) and now have no joint pain and take no meds for last 6 years (had RA for over 60 years). Some 'gluten-free' bread causes flare-ups in me. I agree with you that the study is 'backwards' - they should start with a strict list of allowed foods for first 3 weeks and then add in more foods. Also there is no description of exactly what the foods were or how they were selected by the patients. Were they allowed to use their own judgement?

I'm bewildered, in the way, that half of what I read and with the videos I've watched regarding diet and rheumatory arthritis, some swear by vegan type diet approach, while others swear by a meat only regimen. Some are just regular people and some are doctors. So I don't know what to think. I know, that for me, vegetables just don't seem to fair well with my gut, whether it be cooked vegetables or a tossed salad.

In my case it was grains (wheat,barley,rye,oats, flour, brewers yeast, beer, bread, pasta, etc.). Some people have an intolerance to cows milk, it just depends on what your immune system has become sensitive too and the AIP plan will help you find out.

Yeah, as the other commenter said, try an elimination diet The thing is: an all meat diet would probably work, but it’s not sustainable for a majority of people (it’s boring af), it’s not ecological, it’s expensive and the animals suffer… I think of it as an AIP for people that aren’t very bright and/or lazy folks 🤷‍♀️ An elimination diet should be TEMPORARY, as she said in the video: 3 weeks. You can do anything for 3 weeks. The point of it is to see what your triggers are. Eating only meat removes beneficial gut bacteria, increases heart disease and increases cancer and diabetes risks by quite a bit. Just try an AIP, then slowly (one food at a time) add in restricted foods, and keep notes. It’ll take a few months of experimenting, but it’ll be worth it and you’re not restricted to only meat for the rest of your life

We helped an elderly parent transition to a WFPB diet and she said that her pains were reduced by about 60% after 6 days, and 80% after 10 days. N=1 in this case, but just another exemple. We never tried the elimination diet, that was only going plant-based. She used to eat a lot of meat and cheese and clearly this wrecked her osteoporosis-muscular health. Now she is better with a 95% vegan diet.

Start by eating only tray bakes of root vegetables (carrots, parsnips, swedes) for first day or so and avocado. Then add potatoes and onions. Then marrow/courgettes (no seeds). Then dairy and eggs, then meat. Then other veg. groups each week. Remove skin and seeds of tomatoes and cucumbers. Lastly, add grain-containing foods into diet (bread, pizza,wheat, barley, rye, oats, millet, rice,flour, yeast, beer). Note that normal cows milk may give a different reaction from Jersey cow/sheep/goats milk.

Do not eat any grains. No wheat, barley, rye, oats, flour, yeast, beer. Try for a few weeks. Many people see a huge improvement. Note that foods labelled 'gluten-free' are NOT safe, unless they contain no grains at all.

@steve6375

@@AtticusR Cutting out 'gluten' works for me too, but the 'gluten-free' label is only for celiacs and many bread products labelled as gluten-free also cause me flare ups, so I avoid all grains (rice seems OK though). All grains contain gluten but there are many different types of gluten. The gluten-free label just means it does not contain wheat, barley or rye (or oats if in EU) - it does not mean that it is gluten free! It is mis-lablelled and is a confusing LIE! It just means its OK for 90% of celiacs.

Not all vegan food is healthy so it’s confusing as vegans can drink certain alcohols, have sugar and there are some questionable processed vegan foods eg. meat alternatives… I thought this was a good diet for RA: organic chicken, fish, eggs, vegetables, beans, legumes, fruit, nuts, olive oil and eliminating all processed foods like sugar, white bread, white pasta, white rice, cakes, biscuits, alcohol (the occasional one glass wine with food, small coffee, sheep and goat cheeses, ricotta, dark chocolate, seeded sourdough bread - brown, red, black and wild rice - spelt and chickpea pasta all ok in moderation) I was recently diagnosed so in the early stages and want to be healthy and get it right.

I realize not all the foods listed are eliminated permanently, but during the elimination phase you wouldn't be able to follow any of the plant based doctors' diets! Soy, chickpeas, onions, sweet potatoes, oats...

As a vegan my diet is already very restrictive, and very healthful- much more so than most. Yet I am still facing down RA. A diet is not the miracle cure for everything. You’re not taking away my sweet potatoes, nootch, and tofu. I’ll stick with eliminating alcohol and refined sugars and see where that goes, thanks.
@steve6375
@steve6375 Жыл бұрын
However, you also may have a damaged gut lining and this may cause poor nutrient absorption, so you may also need to take multivitamins, iron, D3, K2 and B12 plus omega-3 supplements (but be careful to check what filler substances they use - e.g. no wheat/grain-based fillers, etc.). re. alcohol, I have found it best to avoid grain-based drink (beer, whiskey, etc.) and white wine (sinus issues) and I just stick to one glass of red wine. It's not really about eating stuff that is good for you, it's about avoiding any stuff which is bad for you.

@@steve6375 You are assuming a lot about me here, Steve. I did not ask for your advice, but I’m going to assume you are only replying because you care. So thank you all the same.
@steve6375
@steve6375 Жыл бұрын
@@ToriKlassen1 Of course I am replying because I care! AI is an autoimmune disease. Your body is producing autoantibodies which are caused by an antigen which is causing an immune response. The problem is often caused by what you eat/drink/contact that causes this immune response. e.g. If I am fed meals which have been laced with arsenic, no amount of tofu is going to cure that! I am not saying don't eat tofu, I am saying don't eat 'arsenic'. Some food(s) may be your 'arsenic' and you won't find out unless you exclude them from your diet in a carefully controlled, scientific way. Apologies if you have already been down this route. I had RA for over 60 years from age of 5. I found out that grains cause flare ups and my joint pain (in my specific case). I have been med-free and pain free for 5 years now after 60 years of living in discomfort and taking NSAIDS.

It's not rocket science it's trial and error. Vegans can be unhealthy too, you're right it's no miracle cure but finding what triggers you is key. It's not A diet that is causing symptoms it's YOUR diet. Steve was genuinely trying to help you.
