ELO has certainly used violins in many of their songs but the star on this song is how they use the cello. Roy Wood started using the cello on their very first album but was gone by the time Showdown was recorded. In Showdown, Mike Edwards played the bass line with a cello in a way no other group was doing at the time. ELO will play the cello like a guitar (strumming or plucking) or like a cello to get the sound Jeff wants to hear. Well done!

Strumming a cello is unlikely, it has a curved bridge to allow the bow to hit one or two strings at a time. Plucking is common (called pizzicato), used all the time in classical and modern compositions. Yes I was a classically trained cellist in the 70's and 80's and I wanted desperately to play for ELO.
@larryg71262 жыл бұрын
They actually used the cello in their previous group "The Move" (very Beatle inspired) which included Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne & Bev Bevan. You can hear that group in ELO's music with an upgrade especially in expanded orchestration.

Roy Wood wasn’t actually involved in this song which is from 1976. Jeff & Roy were buddies from Birmingham who formed a previous band, “The Move” before forming the Electric Light Orchestra (which came to be known as ELO.) Roy moved on 1972 to focus on other projects, while Jeff stayed on to lead the band in his chosen direction and created their distinctive sound. Jeff is a creative genius & amazing talent, artistically & technically. Roy is too, but with more of a wild eccentric streak (check out his hair with his band “Wizzard” which he formed after leaving ELO.)

Can't believe you've now reached double digits in ELO reactions! Pretty much all of their discography is instrumental magic. "Showdown" was actually their second charted hit in the US (their first was a cover of Chuck Berry's "Roll Over Beethoven"), so you got their early stuff here! For more ELO, you can do "Can't Get It Out of My Head", "Livin' Thing", "Telephone Line", "Turn to Stone", "Shine a Little Love", or "I'm Alive". Hi Amber, let me clarify for you who Roy Wood was. *Roy and Jeff (Lynne) co-founded ELO,* but Roy left the band after their first album. It was not a fallout with Jeff, they remained friends after Roy left, but rather it was a fallout Roy had with their management. So while it's true that Roy was indispensable in the creation of the band, and its unique blend of electric rock instruments with those of a light orchestra (violin & cellos) ... hence the name, The Electric *Light Orchestra* ... he quit so early in the band's development that it left Jeff in full creative control of the group--a responsibility Jeff ran with, turning ELO into one of the biggest bands of the '70s and early '80s.

This particular recording is from "Mr Blue Sky, The Very Best of Electric Light Orchestra" from 2012, where Jeff re-recorded all of their greatest hits ALL BY HIMSELF. He played all the instruments, did all the backing vocals , producing (as always) and mixing in his own home studio. It sounds amazing, but I actually prefer the original from the album "On the Third Day" from 1973. It sounds grittier. Also, a lot of the deeper string parts were done with the cello, not the violin. 😉

Electric Light Orchestra was formed in 1970 by the former members of The Move...Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne and Bev Bevan. Lynne had been a late joiner of The Move, joining about halfway through the band's existence. Roy Wood was one of the founding members of The Move but only stuck in ELO for the first album, before leaving to start his own band, Wizzard. Wizzard is most famous for their 1973 Christmas single, I Wish it Could Be Christmas Everyday. Bev Bevan remained the drummer for ELO until 1986. ELO still tours under the moniker Jeff Lynne's ELO ( probably to avoid being confused with ELO Part 2, which was the band that Bevan started in 1986 after the dissolution of the original ELO) .

The violins and cellos are a big part of ELO's sound.

I'll say it again, we had the best music in the 70's. Period. Have you listened to ELO's "Fire on High" before? CBS used a clip of it in their Sunday sports show back in the 70's. Check it out. "The Music Is Reversable, But Time Is Not. Turn Back, Turn Back, Turn Back..."

If I'm remembering correctly this is off their third album, On the Third Day, in 1973. They made their first album in 1971, The Electric Light Orchestra, and never looked back. They did drop the "The" though in 1973 with the release of this album.

The first time i’ve heard this song was in the 1996 farelly brothers movie king pins with Woody Harrelson and Bil Murray. Probably their best movie.
