I think, basically a director should be a 'jack of all trades' and 'master of one'.

Have a say and a hand in everything as a director. Along the way in early stages it's best to learn every aspect of making cinema so you'll better inform your crew as to how to accomplish your vision

You're missing his point a bit. He's not saying you should do everything yourself. He actually explains it. As the director you should have a working knowledge of certain aspects of the production. It really helps you to be a better director when you understand how you film will be edited so you can inform the cinematographer or the actors etc better.

This is such a great tip, really a director should know everything! I myself began learning film directing in film school, but besides what jack is saying, if you know a lot more stuff, (at least where I live, in Spain) you can get work in the industry faster if you know more stuff than just directing. So because i couldn't afford the final year at the film school, I dropped out and bought a camera, and began learning these skills by myself: camera /editing/cinematography (the basic thing - exposure-lenses-basic lighting) and motion graphics/vfx. And thanks to this, when the oportunity knocked on my door, I had a better knowledge of this stuff and I got hired in a documentary tv channel. In the end I wanna direct films, but until I get that chance I'm just continuing to perfect my skills.

Greatest plus of really knowing your craft, (he mentioned this in a superficial manner), I think, is being really cool on set and value for time-oriented. After 5 years of journalism, I started realizing what I was going to use and what I wasn't in my stories. I cannot picture for you the difference that made to my interaction and relationship with my cameraman's (two-man crew in Cyprus). Reportage is perhaps the smallest form of a story that is broadcasted through tv but still it's a movie of sorts ... Nothing beats experience. Not even talent

that is what is called "vision"-how the movie should open, how it should end, even what the music should sound like. That is what the hire the director for-to give a film "direction".

There's a saying that comes to mind: "If you want something done right, you've got to do it yourself." That doesn't mean that others can't do their job right, but unless you're their to guide the vision on every level, it's not going to come together.

Okay... for what it's worth... (lolz) For what little I've done in motion picture form, I've been involved in VHS, which as often as not was getting edited in the camera on sight (terrible low-budget habit... screams "hack") ... and then of course "dub editing" as some called it when we worked with a "remaster room" and ran the tapes from essentially one VCR to another. Now, I'm mostly in animation if I get my fat ass off the couch at all... (lolz) and being utterly cheap (kind of a running theme, here, I guess) I work a lot between Blender and Gimp or Gimp-Gap... all through GNU open licensing... so freeware. BUT for those who are on a budget, don't let that slow you down. There's some truly good functionality on both sides there. Blender is getting bigger and less focused on technical crap, allowing more creativity, and GIMP is simply far and wide better today than it used to be. It's still primarily a Linux thing, but when LinuxMint came about, the user-friendly Linux was officially out of the box. :o)

Well aren't most Directors in the editing room when the film is being pieced together? That's just my assumption.

Sometimes directors will give the dailies to the editor as they are still filming the movie. Then, when the principal photography is over, the director sits down with the editor and gives him notes on the initial edit. From there they work towards locking the picture.

This really cheered me up. Most of my experience is as a professional actor but am trying to be a filmmaker (Or I guess I should say "am now a filmmaker") .I've been finding editing a living hell and wondering if I am crazy to even try this. Jack is really reassuring with this philosophy which is what I had in mind as reasons for choosing this path but couldn't articulate it in my head. I love that idea that to be a filmmaker you should edit so that when you are in a position to hire an editor you can confidently communicate. I'm doing a documentary now but I know in the future one of my strong points is gonna be communicating with actors cos I have the experience of being one and am confident about that. I'm on Final Cut X on a 10 year old mac with memory issues.

Communicating is secondary. If you know how to edit, then you know much, much better how to shoot.

I want to direct but I'm not sure I agree with the sentiment that you should be putting your hand in every pot as intrusively as hes stating here. I agree you should be active and interacting with everyone on every aspect of the film. But to be kind of demanding and controlling the way he's stating I'd imagine would become very frustrating for the very talented people who are working with you on set. If I'm an excellent D.O.P the last thing I'd want is a director who knows less about cinematrography and the intracacy of operating the camera to be micromanaging me. The same way if I'm a very talented director I'd be irritated by a editor telling me how they think the dialogue should be delivered or a set should be colored. I think it's important to give talented people the autonomy to make decisions for themselves it's a collaborative art form and people need some clear lanes to make progress, obviously you get final say as a director but Idk if I agree with the idea of micromanaging everyone. That's just my view on it. Am I wrong to think as such?

As a director you’re the captain of the ship. It’s “your”movie. End of the day good or bad it will all fall on you. Directors like Spielberg, Scorsese, Kubrick are iconic legends because their films have their fingerprint on it. Their “vision”. The only way to be that is to do exactly what the gentleman is saying here.

I’m not saying Mr. Perez is wrong here but I’m getting a bit tired of these interviews using thumbnails that are misleading... and also if Mr. Perez is so confident with his Directing and editing and writing in the film industry why does he chose to do horrible movies, ie. Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus, and not putting his real name on them... because he knows that part of his confidence is manufactured. Right Ace Hannah or is it Jack Johnson... come on... whomever is doing these videos please keep doing them but also please hold these “industry people” accountable for their statements and for their ego.
