@@thavambase6907 I think we are in agreement, what I said was just semantics. I meant that if you already have a dream and want something, telling yourself you need to want it more usually isn't very helpful, and if you don't really want something that much, you can't make yourself want it by choice. I like your #2/#3 points, as well as Damon's point here, that you should find your own way of "breaking into" the industry and not just keep trying to force the worn path, because the odds there are not in your favor.

Wrong. U missed the most important step which is step 4: Learn how to create the entire thing on ur own and force it down people's eyeballs. Let me translate step 4 in practical modern context: In other words DONT FUKIN WAIT to go to auditions or agents fuck alll that, that's like waiting to win a lottery, WHAT U DO INSTEAD IS: buy or rent or borrow a half decent camera and FILM urself doing somethin u r passionate about and then UPLOAD IT FOR FREE ON EVERY SOCIAL MEDIA WEBSITE then SPAM THE LINK EVERYWHERE(all this so far is FREE) ur first video will probably be monkey ass balls quality. Then do it again n jus try to take 1 thing n improve on it that u learnt from 1st video.do all steps n spam. 2nd video will probably monkey ass quality but note it isn't monkey ass BALLS quality. So little improvement there. By ur 6th video it will be MEH OK . Ur 7th video will be "hmmm this is stupid but theres somethin interesting there..." by ur 9th video u will reach the level of what u probably witnessed as ur first video to discover ur favorite KZbin. Do this and only this and thank me later.

You're not the only one like him working harder and harder. It's hard to get in the industry and getting that audition, think of it as the Hunger Games, no one has any experience so they train rain and train (work hard hard and harder) and then when they seem confident they do the games and ONE comes out alive (ONE person gets picked for the audition). It doesn't seem really fair well you have to just work and be lucky.

@@New-qy5mi It is about luck as well. You can be intense and emotional but if you don’t have the look they are going for, the connections, the right script, right place at the right time etc etc it isn’t going to go very far. Take Jennifer Lopez for example with the film Selena. Absolute perfect fit. Not many women would’ve been fit for that. That role was made for her. Now, imagine she wasn’t even someone interested in acting so didn’t audition? Imagine if the woman that the film is about didn’t pass away? Will Jennifer Lopez still be the famous woman we know today? These things make you wonder. In astrology they show positions that make someone most likely to be an actor or at least have interest in it. Every single one of these celebs have the ‘actor placements’. Which is usually things like being a Leo rising, having 5th or 3rd house placements, heavy Gemini placements etc etc (if you don’t know more about astrology other than your sun sign what I’m typing might go over your head) 😂. But to prove to you how it’s literally about the ‘stars having to align’ (no pun intended) to make this happen. Watch a video by a lady called ‘Claire Nakti’ it is titled ‘Sun dominant men’. If you watch that video you will see that the top male actors of our world all have the same placements. I actually found this video because Matt Damon and Ben Afflect were heavily featured in it. Watch the video. It will absolutely blow your mind. She links everything together perfectly.

To me, luck means being in the right place at the right moment. To increase your chances for that, you have to keep trying and never refuse work. Someone I know got a job because the other person got trapped in a flooding and could not get to the office. It was a crappy job, but a few weeks later my friend met an old mate on a lunch break and got a new job, with more money and a better company. I started off with a pretty bad job, with night shifts and little money, but I was desperate to work. After some time I had the chance of another job that fulfilled some of my dreams over the years. I talked to another friend to come with me at that first job, but he refused saying he doesn't like night shifts. I would say that his career path was far for what it could've been.

Excellent insights from Matt. 1) Part of life is learning how to take a leap of faith, fall/fail to reach the other side, walk home and lick your wounded pride, then go out into the world the next day and take another leap of faith. That's true not only in acting, but across all other fields. 2) Sometimes you have to produce the roles you want, like Matt and Ben did with Good Will Hunting after auditioning for so long and not landing the leading roles they were so desperately hoping for.

2:11-2:17 is key! The Focus part. I think there are many different ways to find success in this business the Exact way you want to succeed, you just might have to be a little creative with it. For me this wasn't a 'no one can ever get success by waiting for a role to trickle down' type answer because that would inherently be false since there are multiple examples of that happening but more a 'we see Ourselves unable to get success this particular way so we'll carve out a new way that leads us to the same end point that we would reach if we'd stuck with the trickle down path'. i also really love the dead poets society story because it gives me hope to hear about the waiting part of it or the watching other ppl get it&you not get it part of it in a real way that's not a "I tried out for a bunch of roles&then I got spiderman" type story.

There are very few career choices where getting a top education (let's say Juilliard as a fun example) and being hugely talented and hard working can lead you to absolutely very little or no success. I produce lower budget films and over 10 years have auditioned a ridiculous amount of very talented actors PLUS hard working as hell. We can only hire one for the role. For so many nothing happens for years or ever. I can say this now with many years in the industry and more then a few films under my belt: Talent, check - hard work, check- good looking, check - Now who do you know and can that person hire you, nepotism really helps (as in ANY field) and be networking always, people like to hire friends or people they know PLUS!! a bit of luck really helps.

Suppose that's where networking comes in. I'm fantastic at verbally articulating myself. To put pen to paper persay is another story. 😅 Good luck ya'll. Never give up on your dreams. I question why I'm not capable or have achieved what I aspired to years ago. Let's just be brutally honest. There's countless amounts of super awkward and or obnoxious actors with almost 0 appeal or talent out there. Yet, make a decent living for decades. So if "so and so" actor can do it so can you! My only hope is to become a working actor. Pay the bills and make a lifelong living working in cinema. Even if I'm just a bit part on a recurring TV show.

I don't think studios want to make movies like that anymore, too risky of a bet compared to superhero movies, which are the most juvenile, reductive thing you can put on screen and call it adult entertainment. I think our culture is suffering for it. We need stories about real people to stop the hate.

Never give up (leaning, adapting, trying, and improving). 2.) Be honest with yourself "I'm not getting that chance again....what am I going to do about it"? 3.) In this day and age? Make your own content. (Dont ask the world. Show the world). Do THESE things and more? And you MAY get "extraordinarily lucky too". IN all? You have to know WHY you do whatever it is that you do. Yes, being attractive helps, but in fact the greatest actors who have Oscars and other awards, are simply very talented, great actors, and that they look great as well? Well, some are born full package, but also you have to be hard working. It's a myth that you don't have to work hard in Hollywood. In fact I work in the industry few years now and it's very hard work - actor or director, or anyone. Very hard.

ir helps a lot to have features the camera likes or finds interesting (i.e. things our brain read better when captured through a lens) like a bigger head and a smaller body, or a flatter face to be shot more easily from the side, etc. but at the end of the day you usually have to have the talent. Those are the people that last anyway - see Christopher Lee's advice on this. FWIW I think Riz Ahmed is the finest actor working in film today followed by Joaquin Phoenix.

LOL at all the people "correcting" Matt Damon in the comments. I see this on every interview, someone complaining, "it's just dumb luck" or "it's all about looks" or "it's who you know" and 100 other things. The man is here telling you exactly what it took to break in (for him at least), and y'all are like "no no no, that's not it, it's this other thing." Okay then. Let me know how that works out for you. Somehow, even with all the dumb luck, the nepotism, the rigged system, greedy producers, and whatever other boogeyman is specifically keeping YOU from your dream, there are new actors, new TV shows, new movies, new books, new commercials, new shorts, new web series, new video games, and new comics every single day. Neat trick, huh? Life ain't fair! But do yourself a favor and look up how many currently world famous actors, filmmakers, and musicians were, at one point, completely broke, destitute, homeless, in prison, living in their cars, living in a bus station, living off food stamps, drug addicts, etc. Life wasn't fair to them either, but they're famous now... I guess they just "knew somebody!" 👀

Matt Damon is nothing as an actor compared to a woman I acted with once. They say there are a lot of people in Hollywood with talent. As a struggling actor for many years I thought so too as I saw many more skilled than I was. Until I had a real eye opening experience in a play I was in 20 years ago. From being in that play I discovered that actually nobody has much talent based on the performance of an actress in that play. This woman was the best actress I had ever seen. Her performance made all the academy award actresses I had ever seen in films put together look like nothing compared to this woman’s talent. We had rehearsed for months and a few days before the performance the lead actress got sick. The producers didn’t want to scrap the play so they held some quick auditions for a replacement. I was at the auditions when hundreds of actresses showed up. They were good but nothing special. One actress was given a ride by her older sister who sat watching the auditions. The director kept saying No, No you are playing an aging prostitute reflecting on the mistakes in her life. You are not believable. At a break the actress with the sister wanted to practice so she gave the script to her sister to work on it with her. It was like lightening once in a lifetime. The sister was unbelievable. Everyone, the director the producer the whole cast stopped and watched. The director asked the sister to read the lead part. She put the script down and said she didn’t need it as she had memorized it by listening to the women auditioning. She did the part cold with not having ever rehearsed it. It was unbelievable. Her acting, but it really was not acting, because she BECAME the prostitute, was the most amazing thing I had ever seen. After doing some of the lines she would stop and ask if it was ok if she did it again but change some of it because she said as written it was not how the real Lola would have responded. The writer was there and remarked she was actually improving the lines for the part. Everyone asked her how she did that. She said script only captured 80% of the character and when she acted and became the character she added the 20% that was missing to make Lola a whole person. The director immediately dismissed the other actresses auditioning for the part and said she had it. Then he said to her tell me the truth. NO actress in the entire world can do what you did without months of rehearsal but it was an original play never done before so she couldn’t have seen the script before. Everyone asked how did she do it. She said when she was 7 years old her mother took her to a broadway play. On seeing it once she memorized all the songs in it and performed them on the subway coming home. She said people clapped then asked her to do some of the speaking parts. She did the lead actress then did it again and added some lines because she said that was not what she thought the character would say. She then told everyone she went to see Sweeney Todd with her sister. She said the actress doing Mrs. Lovett was terrible and was just a funny caricature of the real Mrs. Lovett. The real person was a much darker evil person. Everyone then asked her to do Mrs. Lovett. She did and I have never been so scared in my whole life. I was afraid to turn my back on her after that because I was afraid. On the day of the performance of the play only about 20 people showed up and there was only one performance. This woman’s performance was earth shattering. All the actors and actresses in the play said they gave the best performance of their lives due to acting with her. I had some lines with her and it was the best acting I ever did in my life due to interacting with her. They said she lifted the whole company up. After the play all she could do was console her sister that she didn’t get the part. She told her sister I am a language teacher and do acting for fun. I have never seen anyone ever before or since with a hundredth of the acting talent this woman had. She has never been in a single movie or TV show. If she had she would put everybody to shame with her amazing unique talent. This woman really IS the one in a million. The highlight of my whole life was reading my 5 lines with her.

Wow that’s incredible! Does she have any social media? I would like to learn from her. My drama teach always says to me that I am far ahead in knowing my monologues and the characterisation then my peers but sometimes unable to portray that emotion further, she mentioned that when ever I perform she would get a glimpse then I sorta revert back to myself and making me disconnected with my character. When ever I read a book or online monologues I would actually see it happen in my head from their way characters are dressed to their mannerisms sometimes. And I sorta play a movie in my head whilst reading. My weakness is portraying a character who’s emotions I never felt. I can read and understand and know how this character is supposed to do but actually portraying the character is bit of challenge nonetheless I love the challenge bcz it unlocks a new side to my acting skills. I would like to get some insight and learn from that talented women!

@@ididitmyselfyeaaahhh855 - It might be the most difficult acting ability to portray a character with emotions you have not experienced. This actress can do it better than anyone I have ever seen. She reads a script and becomes the character totally like she does not exist anymore. I saw her play an aging prostitute in a one act play. She was so good that after the play audience members asked her if she was ever a prostitute and she said no. Many said they did not believe her because she couldn’t possibly play a part that close without experiencing it. Also the actor working with her said after the play said that was the best acting he had ever done in his life. He said it was not like he was working with an actress but the real person in the play or script. Probably the most amazing thing I saw her do was she played a Japanese ghost in a noh play. It is a special ancient Japanese play that requires the actors to move in very specific and unnatural ways. This actress watched KZbin videos of Japanese actors performing noh plays, and Japanese master actors teaching the details of how to move the arms, fingers, head, neck, shoulders, and how to glide when walking without moving the body. She did this perfectly. So good in fact that Japanese members of the audience said she is the ONLY western actor who has ever portrayed a completely authentic performance. Other people in the audience thought she was Japanese with her makeup, outfit, facial expressions and Japanese voice. She speaks in addition to English, also Spanish, French, Russian, any British accent , New York accent all so authentic that people from those countries hearing her swear she is from that country. I have heard her speak Russian and Russians say she has to be from Moscow. Yet she is from Brooklyn New York. Many actors and actresses have asked her to teach them to do what she does. She says she can’t. She said she was born with this ability and can’t teach it. But every actor who has worked with her has said she has made them act better than they ever did in their whole life. Here is clip of her from a burlesque show she appeared in. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqe5amijqsyChbM. She had never ever done any burlesque performing before. She said she became Tempest Storm and Bettie Page for this show. Audience members swore she had to have been doing this for years but she hadn’t. After the show she took off her costume and became her shy self again. Men told her that they could tell she got a lot of sexual excitement dancing like that and turning men on or she couldn’t possibly perform that way. She said no, I am not the person you just saw on that stage. It was all an act for the audience. Men in the audience after the performance said they knew she was coming on to them personally by the way she looked at them. She said she wasn’t but she was just acting and putting on a show as a burlesque performer as accurately as she could. This woman is the most amazing actress that ever lived. I have never seen anyone close to her ability. She quit doing any burlesque anymore because of too many men propositioning her after the show saying she was the sexiest woman they had ever seen. She kept telling them she was not the person on that stage but just a regular woman. She said she liked putting the costume away and being herself again.

Look I'm not saying Damon doesn't have talent but the fact is he never struggled a day in his life. He was young in the movie Mystic Pizza and then picked up in School TIes which set him to stardom. It happens and many times it doesn't happen. Something I just told my own subscribers in my topic this week. Some of you out there (including this writer and vlogger) have the artist aspiration. You have been told by the very few who made it to believe in yourself and never give up. Well the simply fact is the arts are very different than any other profession. Because usually--someone else has to let you in. Now what I would tell you if you are 18 or 40 and feel that your destiny is in the arts? I would not tell you to just stay the "safe route" and give up on your dreams. I would tell you to pursue the artist aspiration smartly. Get another trade that you at least like. So the agents of industry never have you by the throat. You have to go to work anyway so you might as well have the job that pays well. I never went through the starving artist phase. I went through a starving student phase. So when I finally did pursue the artist endeavor I did it with a job I also like that contracts for 100K a year and four month vacations in Europe. That's how you go through being a starving artist. You don't starve at all. Hope this helps someone---Charles
