some people just dont have the type of brain to vibe with the culture of comedy. Like they CANT handle a joke being just a joke. It all has to be reflected into politics and morality when comedy has always been there to poke fun at those things. So of course someone who sees the world in a politically correct lens, everything must go through that lens. There is no separation of joke and intent and true beliefs of the comedian. If the comedian says something politically incorrect than they must be a piece of shit, and if you are laughing, youre a piece of shit too. Theyll never find politically incorrect jokes funny. Evidence of this is her saying her favorite comedian is Trevor Noah.. he basically gives lectures that allows him and the audience to feel morally superior to their peers while some jokes are sprinkled in. You dont have to like Shane Gillis or politically incorrect humor at all. But the moral grandstanding is what will bring you a lot of shit talk from comedy fans. You arent morally superior to those who can laugh at politically incorrect jokes..

With all due respect, why is the Uber pool joke an "oh man"? It's not like he's saying there's anything wrong with the diversity in his family? If anything he's saying he's proud of how diverse his family is. That joke could have been very offensive very easily, and he chose not to. If his jokes in this monologue offend you, I pray you can find a way to navigate around the modern world without being offended. We should make it very clear that it is not offensive to refer to diversity as a positive thing lol.

People really LOVE using the word advocate as a way to create a moral high ground so they have an excuse to justify their terrible behavior towards others they don't agree with. He literally has a whole coffee shop where they give employment opportunities to disabled people. You have a KZbin channel that gets 100 views a video ... Yeah, YOU'RE the one who's actually helping disabled people.

Oddly I think I have a similar job to this lady. I spend a fair amount of my day working and advocating for marginalized people that have been categorically rejected by society. Additionally because our society is in a weird spot I need to mention I'm gay. With that out of the way this lady is the problem. Her morals and ethics are clearly out of line with what is actually correct for caring and advocating for the disabled. I'd don't think she would be receptive to it, but I need to explain why her attitude is why the groups she claims to advocate for are mistreated. It's not a blurb or catchy internet response. She needs an entire reframing of her perspective. Dare I say it. She needs to check her privilege.

Shane actually didn’t get to join the cast when he was initially hired back in 2019, he was fired before making an appearance. Since then his popularity has grown and he became bigger than SNL, hence why they brought him back. His sketch comedy is also A-tier. Totally fine not to like him or find him funny but you definitely did seem like you made your mind up before watching. Also important to note that it wasn’t a Ted Talk, he’s just telling jokes. Didn’t seem like he was derogatory to people of colour either, the only true negative character in all of his jokes was the white kid on the playground. The jokes a comedian tells isn’t necessarily an extension of their core beliefs. As well as employing people with disabilities Shane has volunteered to coach differently abled athletes (he also has jokes about that which you likely wouldn’t enjoy). Actions > words.

Chez- I'd argue that for as much as you want to help "marginalized" people, you are actually doing them a disservice.. If this is your real personality, then anyone you interact with in the real world might associate lgtbq, people of color, disabled, etc with you, and think they are all as unlikeable as you, which definitely is not the case

To quote a line from "Stripes" ..... Lighten up, Francis. Yes, Shane most definitely was implying that people with Down's Syndrome tend to be less intelligent and socially aware than the average person - *because they are*. It's just a fact. My father has no fingers on his right hand due to a farm accident when he was a teenager. We don't pretend he can play the piano or type well. We sometimes make jokes about him being "shorthanded," or other similar references to his missing fingers. When I was growing up and required his help he would tell me the problem was I had too many fingers. Maybe try not being offended on someone else's behalf for a change. It's ok to include people with disabilities in comedy. Strange as it may seem, some people feel ostracized when comedians *don't* make jokes about them as if they are just too precious and fragile to take a joke or two aimed their direction. I'm guessing you are someone who appreciates diversity in every sense - except in thoughts that are not in line with your own.

You obviously didn't watch the entire set. You watched some edited garbage made for you to think he is a bad comedian. When he said he wasn't doing well he was actually killing it. Its called stand up, that's another way to get a laugh. Shane is someone that has coached for the Special Olympics and he has a coffee shop that hires special needs people. I can guarantee he does more for special needs people than you do. This was stated in the set, which you CLEARLY didn't watch! You also did very little research on why he was fired. Go enjoy garbage comedy by Hannah Gatsby. But, if you actually gave his standup a chance you would see that this man has a heart for the less fortunate. Please do better

His entire monologue wasn't very good to begin with, though. It's recycled jokes that most people have already heard. Your work is so important and I LOVE that you employ disabled and people on the spectrum. I hope you shy away from critiquing comedians about their "tone". It really polarizes you to people, makes you seem humorless and finger wagging, and enters you into discussions you don't need to be having. It also sends a bunch of ignorant people over to your KZbin to say mean things, which is super unhelpful. I truly believe the majority of Shane's audience (and Shane) feel sympathy, empathy and compassion for the disabled community even if they can laugh at a joke. I guarantee a lot of your customers and some of your employees enjoy comedy, and don't want to be told what is okay to laugh at, by anybody. I wish there were companies like yours in NYC!

You know that jokes are funny sometimes because they don't actually portray reality but satirize it? Of course you don't. You're a middle aged soccer mom that thinks your opinion matters. You should try something called "not giving a shit about things". You'll find that you stop being offended and become happier. At the end of the day, you control how a person's words make you feel, and when you choose to allow them to make you upset, it just makes you weak.

Hey I’m a fan of Gillis and I apologize for all the mean comments but I’m gonna give my two cents as respectfully as I can. The way I see Shane’s stand up is that he is treating disabled people, mostly those he has direct contact with in his own family, in a way that is as true as possible. He doesn’t try to infantile them, he treats them as human beings. As someone with a sister on the spectrum it has always infuriated me how she is infantiled and talked to like a toddler, making her seem less than. Shane treats them as adults who in most ways are better than us in many aspects of day to day life. If you don’t find it funny that’s fine, comedy is subjective but with Shane being uncomfortable it’s mostly because Shane usually works in front of people who are already fans of more edgy humor so going in front of a much more PC crowd like SNL was a big jump. It would be like throwing Trevor Noah in front of a crowd of Dave Chappell fans , he’s either going to be uncomfortable or hostile. I hope that can give a more nuanced take that isn’t so hate filled.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful response! I really appreciate the time and care that you put into sharing your thoughts. I really value having conversations with humans who have opinions that are different than my own. :) And, I do agree with your point about treating disabled adults as adults and not infantilizing them. You are absolutely right in pointing out the frequency that that happens, both inside and outside of comedy. And while I still don’t like the way Shane went about that, I am really grateful that you brought another perspective and nuance to the conversation! Thanks for helping expand my understanding!
