It's frustrating that a Black woman died because of ableism. A lot of the stigma and ignoring centered around food allergies is seen as something that is mostly rooted in the way people don't really recognize a lot of disabilities as something to take seriously unless it affects your life in a specific way. Even then if it affects your life too much the script then becomes that you're just better off dead. Especially for people who work in the film and TV industry, food safety is extremely important. It's not unusual to have food for hosted events, for filming and for shoots for example so your people don't get fatigued, injured, etc. Really hosting is extremely common in a lot of businesses, especially for a place like this promoting their brand. I don't know why people think this is just some rare thing. It's also a safety issue in and of itself if your staff aren't eating and the whole point of hosting is to counter that. It's not just a simple perk, a good leader will recognize it as a way to reduce the chance of harm. And more broadly there's something to be said about the mixture of both ableism toward Black women and the manufactured consent around public health where we're just normalizing viewing health and safety as just a "you're responsible for you and nobody else ever can be held accountable" and we're seeing it with public health and safety too. That's also a major safety issue. Saying she shouldn't be eating or that it's her fault is nothing short of victim blaming. A Black woman died because of ableism.

I work in food service. 100% this. Ironically, at my place of work, there are certain items I can't make because of my peanut allergy. Most of our stuff is safe for me, but there's a Nutter Butter shake & we have to use separate mixers for it and everything. I have to literally be on one of my coworkers' ass to not cross-contaminate or switch tasks to get that milkshake down because not only is it a great way to catch a case, it could also potentially kill ME in front of customers, and she catches an attitude every time. Not the only thing I've had an ableism issue with her over, either!

I have shellfish allergies and ordered a meal that was supposed to only contain chicken. I asked four times if they were sure that they didn't use any other ingredient that may contain traces of shellfish, and they said yes. A red, itchy face and a swollen tongue later, I find out that they use oyster sauce, which I'm allergic to, and never disclosed it.

People saying “she shouldn’t have eaten the food if she had allergies” clearly haven’t been in the food industry and don’t understand why FOOD CONTAMINATION is something to avoid. I used to work in the industry and customers with allergies have to warn the employee they have a certain allergy (there’s also signs or stickers advising the customer to do so) and the employee has to keep in mind and make sure the food made for the employee had the food to be made separately and the tools used either cleaned thoroughly or the employee has to use separate clean tools. It’s a case of negligence. It doesn’t matter if you’re obese or skinny, an allergy is not discriminate and can affect anyone (the ableism definitely is at play with the victim-blaming).

@ThatGirlJD
@ThatGirlJD Ай бұрын
EpiPens are not stocked in first aid kits because they are prescription only items and they require training. No EpiPen was mentioned and she asked to be taken to the hospital by one of the attendees, instead of immediately calling 911. Most people don't want to take an ambulance because of the bill. The ambulance is safer than being driven to the hospital because they have training and equipment to open closed airways. They are also trained to drive quickly and safely.

something to keep in mind... BoxLunch isn't just similar to Hot Topic. Hot Topic owns BoxLunch so Hot Topic is (also) complicit in this allergy negligence. This situation absolutely makes me sick to my stomach. Thinking of and praying for her family, and hoping they get a lot of money from a lawsuit. Even though suing obviously won't bring Dominique back, hopefully it will raise alarm bells and push food services as a whole to be stricter about this literal life and death situation that is serving someone with an allergy -- so others don't end up in the situation Dominique was victim of. People need to take food allergies seriously and not be cavalier with something that could end someone's life. So many tragic situations just this year because people who handled food weren't careful

Nobody understands how scary food allergies are, and how little of exposure is needed to trigger a life threatening attack. I've been in the ER for just a spoonful of an item made with an allergen. It's not just hives and itchy tongue for some of us, it's your body literally suffocating and attacking you, and with every allergy attack it gets worse and more life threatening. It's not something to shrug your shoulders about, and I wish catering companies and restaurants would be more aware.

It really pisses me off that people don't care about allergies or properly label things. We get handmade treats from neighbors and a lot our family is allergic to nuts. Well one treat had some chocolate with nuts and some without so my uncle ate one without nuts and thinking they were safe he ate more that had nuts. He had a reaction but luckily was able to catch it in time and it wasn't enough to kill him. But it very well could have if he was more severely allergic! Nuts are also an extremely common allergy how do you not label that. Everything should be labeled. This is why before I Make any food for anyone I ask about allergies. And when working if someone asks for a lettuce wrap o ask if it's for an allergy because im not messing around with that.
