A dispensary in Gongkar

This film was made by the association l'Arbre Médicinal - in English, "The Medical Tree". This association was created in 2005 with the aim of building a dispensary at Gongkar, in the Tawang valley in Arunachal Pradesh in the extreme north-east of India. The people of this beautiful but remote corner of the Himalayas suffer from illnesses which are not difficult now to cure but from which they are dying through lack of money for treatment.
The project has now become a reality: 5000 people are now being treated and are receiving their medicines free of charge. We expect soon to begin the construction of the dispensary and would like a doctor to be able to visit twice a week. A young girl from the village has received sponsorship to train as a nurse and is already qualified: from now on she will be able to be on duty every day. We hope that the Indian government will eventually take on the financing completely.
Grouping together five small villages of which Gongkar is the centre, 15000 people are directly concerned by this aid. No medical assistance is available in the vicinity- the closest clinic consists of two rooms, is very under-equipped, and is at three hours walking distance ! We need money to buy building materials, medical equipment, the medicines themselves and to pay for the medical staff necessary. The inhabitants of the village will construct the dispensary themselves free of charge.
L'Arbre Médicinal is associated with the Gongkar Medical Tree Society in India, and the project is being overseen by Geshe Thubten Phuntsok, a Buddhist monk at Sera in Southern India who himself originates from the village. Everybody involved in these two associations gives their services free.
