I was going to add to my other comment, but let me throw this out here. I was a Park Ranger for 6 yrs. We worked very remote areas. Many times the reason you may encounter some guy out in a remote area is because they are making, processing or growing something nearby and they dont want you to discover their secret. Most of the time they dont want to have a confrontation (that may bring authorities), they just want you to move along to somewhere else. I have seen cameras and signaling devices guarding areas where they are doing their activities. I used tell visitors to just stay alert and if something looks or feels "iffy", pack it up and go. Also, there is never a time when a person by themselves in any remote area should not have "protection" on their person. And dont feel bad about doing so. The first line of defense is staying alert, avoiding and leaving if anything comes up. That will handle 99% of any issues. Stay safe. Edited to add: If someone does approach you out in the wilds and you cannot leave before he gets to you, do NOT let them close the distance on you. Most victims mindset during an encounter like this is "this cant be happening". Do NOT fall into that pattern thinking. It IS happening and you are going to have to deal with it. Stand up, hold your non-dominant arm out towards them with your palm facing them and yell, "STOP! DO NOT APPROACH ME! Anything you need to say you can say from over there." If they continue to approach you should repeat your warning as you access your protection in your dominant hand pointed downward. When he see's that and continues to close the distance gap he should be considered a hostile threat that is forcing you to take action. There is nothing he has to say that cant be said from 50+ feet away or more.
@BetterBetterandBetter

I watched a law enforcement training video that taught the very real danger of edged weapons. While most of us assume that someone who is 20 feet away from us isn't an eminent threat, the video proved that an experienced law enforcement officer could NOT draw a weapon and shoot before the person could attack them with a knife from that distance. Don't be fooled by distance. Also, keep in mind that a Taser is a distance weapon that can be used to incapacitate someone from a distance, as can tear gas or pepper spray. Better to be judged by twelve than carried by six.

There is a great book called “The Gift of Fear”. It’s a study of real crimes and interviews with surviving victims and a common element in many is that the victim subsequently realized there had been signs of something “not right” before the attack and they ignored them. All humans and animals have a survival instinct to detect things out of sorts and one should not ignore them.

And do regular practice with it. Not only target but defensive training, keeping/creating distance, kicking etc. Practice out alone with a tree & an empty gun even. If you have an automatic know how to clear it fast. I prefer revolver because it's so dependable. Don't hide it under so many clothes that you can't reach it fast. Or IMO worse if in a purse. Depending on state & laws, you can conceal or open. Consider taking the course to get ccw certified. Not good in all states but most.

I have been camping and backpacking in Utah since 1976. One thing I learned is there is ALWAYS someone who knows you are there. In 1982 I took a class that had us camping in very remote spots. At night when others could see the fire, they came around to "visit". After that I never had a fire again. Lots of scary folks that live in the wilderness, lol.

As far as your stalker I would learn how to check your rig for trackers, maybe have someone with knowledge check it once and a while and train you. As I watch this I thought about you having your new rig in Tecopa for the fundraiser. That could have been a place a stalker could of tagged your Jeep. Be safe, leaving was the right thing to do. Ive been a lone female nomad for 13 years. Prior to full time nomadic life I had already traveled the US extensively, alone. NEVER have i had any trouble because of one thing....common sense. Traveling alone, especially as woman, do not EVER go ANYWHERE where there is not anyone else camping, a house or business within shouting distance. Hang out on a clothes line a few large mens shirts, have a second chair sitting out and a pair of mens boots by the door. Avoid letting others see you are alone and dont even tell your camping neighbors you are alone if possible. Ive have made this comment many times to other nomads. Its not other travels you need to worry about to much, its the locals. They know the roads, the BACK roads, where people hike and camp, where the cops are and where to bury a body. Be smart, don't take chances, predators are everywhere.

There's no reason for somebody to have a mask on in the middle of nowhere. This looks like an intimidation tactic from what I saw. If he was a half decent person, even if you were near his camp, would have honked and given a wave and said hey I'm just down the road if you need anything. But that jerk didn't. He just wanted to act like the tough guy. I'm glad you left because there's something not right in his head. Always follow your gut. Period. Having survived my kidnapper, I completely understand the hyper-awareness & immediately jumping to the what ifs & what’s worth the anxiety. Our gut instinct is there to warn us & it’s better to be safe than sorry. I camp at actual state park campgrounds & such (we have no blm land in my state) & if I’m camping alone & a lone dude pulls up & I get the eeby geebies I hightail it out. It truly does suck sometimes being a single female tryina live the life you desire in the USA. I am glad you posted this. I wish more people would post these so that people are truly aware of how that lifestyle is. It gets romanticized entirely too much on the socials imho. So glad you’re okay & followed your gut. That’s never a wrong move. Just because we have protection doesn’t mean we want to use our protection.

There are other similar videos on KZbin, but statistically this type of behavior is rare. You're in far more dangerous territory in any given city, in any country, than out on public land. That doesn't mean that sociopaths and psychopaths don't exist, and once they have their chosen hunting ground, that's probably where they will remain. Remaining aware of your surroundings and making plans for every eventuality (disaster planning, essentially) are good ways to help you remain safe. Check out any of Gavin de Becker's books on fear and staying safe for more information (this is for anyone and everyone).

Maybe because I'm 65 or because I raised 5 boys totally alone which involved a ton of camping and rockhounding and being out in the middle of nowhere all the time doing the things we liked doing, but i refuse to be treated like a prey animal by a holes like that creepy jerk. I (and you) have as much right to be out in the wilderness alone as anyone else. I feel safe around nature and every animal, but not humans. I got myself a firearm and learned how to really use it so I'm comfortable and I don't pose a danger to anyone else. But nobody should mess with me or try to threaten me or whoever I might be with, be it human or animal. That's just wrong and is denying your right as a human being to enjoy the world around you. _"…and take a few shots so they know…"._ No, no, _NO!_ Never, ever let anyone know you’re packing heat! The element of surprise raises the odds-and in situations like this, women need to stack the odds in their favor as much as possible. Adding a short, 20 ga shotgun loaded with #1 buckshot to the camping repertoire would help a lot when the adrenaline is flooding thru the body, especially after dark. The rest of amexna's comment I agree with. And there are plenty of KZbin vids showing how to make, or buy perimeter alarms. Some use cartridge primers, which are plenty loud enough in a place like that. A 1 million power spotlight isn’t a bad idea either...

If you have a known stalker, have you notified the police, yet? That is serious and dangerous. Someone mentioned getting your vehicle checked for a tracking device, I'd get your phone checked, also. Someone wearing a mask sitting and staring out in a remote site where you are camping is not a coincidence. If you don't have trail cameras, I 'd get a few and put them up so a license plate or someone's identity can be proof to give the police. You must take this seriously and take precautions to be safe first. Personally, I'd be wearing my Glockster in full view.

I am so relieved that I live in a pretty safe country for the most part - snakes and crocs aside! I’ve travelled the US solo and slept in the back seat of my vehicle more than once, but there’s something about travelling remotely in your country that sets my nerves on edge. I never could put my finger on it, but it’s there, it’s everywhere, it exists. I too experienced something creepy on a later trip when I was travelling with my young daughter. We pulled into a deserted spot to set up camp for the night, and had just rolled out our cooking gear when I noticed a black truck entering the site. Like yourself, he sat there and watched us before starting to edge his truck towards us. Acting on pure instinct, I threw everything into the back of the vehicle and we hit the road as fast as our vehicle allowed on the dirt. INSTINCT kicked in. NEVER, EVER ignore it. Stay safe and be aware, and as others have suggested here, keep your weapon on your person at all times. 🙏👀

Your situational awareness keeps you safe. Deterrence will also keep you safe. When setting up camp, you could put out 2 or 3 chairs to make it seem like your not alone. Open carry like others suggest is an option too. I'm guessing he was looking around for other people that may be with you. If you had packed up your chair before you got back in the Jeep, he prob assumed you were leaving and he had lost his opportunity. Many crimes are born out of opportunity. Again, good situational awareness!

Folding chairs don't take up much space. That is a good idea, putting out an extra chair or two. I will do that when I try camping next year. When I first moved into a small cottage with no back door, alone in a part of my town that was a weird mix of gentrification and homeless, I quickly notice that homeless people were okay with hanging out around the cottages now and then, so I said a pair of men's used work boots next to the front door mat as if someone had come home and taken them off and left them out there. I didn't have any trouble with people sleeping on my little porch after that.

The fact he had a face mask on in his truck in the middle of nowhere told you everything you needed to know. Creepers everywhere. Men have to be careful, too. Glad this didn’t happen at night.

Such an inspiring and mystical area and he took all the fun away! I'm also an outside girl and sometimes I seek some solitude as well, some people scratch their heads, but we all have different things, so don't let this stop you being you. This kind of incident makes me want to carry more serious protection, but it's not "I try" stopping me either:) I've learned to double up on tents and lighting, extra chairs and wasp spray. I kinda moved on to behind solid walls. Good ideal is a large pair of mens boots outside any door. I think a good invention, is a movable passenger seat mannequin of some sort. You did all the right things and you're doing great work Thank You

I heard the "protection" being readied in the background. Good girl Sarah... Hopefully you carry a shovel as well. Just so you can tidy up after a confrontation.

Your little Angel is too precious ❤ I noticed she was doing protective circles around you, do you think she was sensing something? They are here to love & protect us, when I always thought it was the other way round lol. Of course we provide them care & safety as well. Wishing you safe journeys. You've built yourself a delightful world ❤

It sucks that you’re having to deal with this crap, but I’m so glad that you trust your gut enough to know to act on it. Good for you! So glad you got out of there. Hugs!

That looks like the Cane beds road going to Coral Pink Sand dunes, There are some strange scary people out there. My wife and I do a lot of camping in remote areas and it can be a little nerve racking sometimes. At least in the day time you can see what's going on, night time is a little different. We use those battery power motion detectors from harbor freight sometimes. They will give you warning if something or someone is near. be carefully out there.
