While this particular act is not, the sentiment is. Do the right thing, even if everyone else is doing something else. Even if no one notices. Even if it hurts. It's called integrity. If everyone (specifically those in positions of power) had a little more integrity we would all be better off. Integrity is the entire theme of the show. Highlighting just what power it holds, and what we are desperately missing. It's a very common theme for Sorkin. Even characters you may disagree with or are in conflict with the "hero", are not the "bad guys" if they have integrity. The bad guys in a Sorkin script are the disingenuous, the liars, the schemers, the perversely motivated, and the corrupt. Don and McAvoy disagreed a lot, but they respect each other, and earn the audience's respect because they both have integrity. The network weasel from upstairs doesn't care about truth or the responsibility of the news - just ratings and money. He's the bad guy.

I remember this episode was where Don became my favourite character. I thought he was entertaining from the get go, acting as Mac's more realistic foil who has a mandate to get new viewers and doesnt have the reputation Will/Mac have in the industry to work with. But here, when he recognised that Gabby was a real person with family and friends who wanted to know if she was ok, he puts his foot down and stands for what he truly believes, what he does the job for. As he says in the previous episodes, he's, "equipped for this," but it wasn't his job, couldn't be because he'd lose it in a heartbeat. Don spends a lot of time in the show being a necessary counter to the blind idealism that Mac and Charlie sometimes show, but when push comes to shove Will said it best: He's a fucking Newsman.

It was the show doing an episode on the shooting of Gabrielle Giffords, which was something that happened irl, and how it made most of the mainstream news sources look like clowns because they all declared her dead based on a single, unconfirmable, report and hearsay/rumours, when she was in fact alive, and a simple check would have proven them wrong. It's also a commentary on how news programmes will deliberately present salacious rumours as facts in order to gain attention, and thus, sponsors. In other words, they believed that calling her dead without checking for the truth, would have earned them a bigger payday than doing actual journalism.

People like to focus on the compliment Will gives Don at the end of this, but hold up a second. Look at Charlie Skinner and the compliment HE pays. Right after Don says his "It's a person" line, Charlie turns and looks at Reese and Will and he exudes this air of: and that's how it is. And Sam as an actor deliberately straightens his back and leans back in defiance. By siding with Don he's both defying Reese and challenging Will. His character knew the ship they were rebuilding and he knew right then that Don's sentiment exemplified their goals and their ideals. It's so minor and such a hat tip towards both the actors and the script. And all credit to Sam Waterston, he nails his character but this episode is a damned standout.

I googled. This actually happened on Jan. 8, 2011, when 6 ppl were shot at Giffords' "corner congress". Aaron Sorkin got a "Thank You" from ppl who fell victim to this type of media's reporting. NPR said that they had "two Gov't sources" reporting this, which is enough to confirm a story, so CNN & FOX also* repeated the story [for 15 minutes] before retracting it. CNN even mentioned this on their show "Reliable Sources" although, it's not on YT. Their most recent video seems to be "calling out Fox for reporting fake news".😏 Funny how CNN seems to forget their errors, like Covington Catholic. (Both channels can rot, smh..)

For those confused: - The Newsroom is a TV show, the premise is that Will (Jeff Daniels) is a news anchor on a news show that cares more about ratings than the truth - Mac joins, takes over executive producer from Don, and wants to change it so they report the news. - The show had taken a ratings nosedive, as they stooped reporting on vapid trending topics and instead focused on actual news. This, coupled with Will having some controversies surrounding him, had Leona and the VP threatening Will's anchor position. - Up until the moment when the VP storms in complaining about people changing channels, Will had been digging his heels in. - Don was also pretty self absorbed up until this point, and was a minor antagonist. That he sided with Mac here "Its a person...", was the beginning of his character shift. - Likewise, Will decides in this moment to trust Mac and report correctly, not share unverified information.

I didn't like Don up until this moment. After this, he became my most favorite after Will and Charlie of course.

I still don't know what was Don doing there, because Mac was the executive producer of that show.

If only the real news platforms had an ounce of integrity. It’s saddening really

As someone who's loved the west wing and this show it took me multiple times rewatching this scene to remember "bring more than a couple a guys" is also a line used by President Bartlett in The West Wing, love the Easter eggs like this that are difficult to notice because they don't stand out at all, they just naturally fit with the writing.

The saddest part is that all the cable news channels really did say she was dead.

I have absolutely no idea as to why KZbin kept recommending me this and I still have no idea 🤷♂️

Seams like Chinese understands a Hollywood movie than me. I didn't understand the whole drama...and KZbin recommend this to me!

Loved watching this show, watched an episode a day for the full 3 series. However, at the time it complete passed me by. Knowing that this show came out only a few years after the events they portray. I think the 10 years gives these events space to breathe. First episode with Deepwater was amazing, the event wasn't fresh in the memory. But looking back made me see how huge an event it was. One of the largest disasters in my lifetime.

One of the greatest drama series to come out of the US. As a Brit I know this because you stole most of your good ones from us!

What I love about this scene is that the whole episode was about dealing with a tabloid story, and a bigfoot presentation, and a lot of petty squabbles. All that gets dropped when the alert come in and everyone is focused on what really matters. Not image, not rating, but peoples lives. Great series.

"Not image, not rating, but peoples lives." You mean using their lives for views and ratings. They didn't give a shit if she died or not, but needed to be Right to get the best ratings.

I had this scene playing in my head on Friday when social media kept reporting that an MP had been shot dead, but it hadn't been formally confirmed, and the main broadcasting channel hadn't called it. I was hoping for another outcome like this. Sadly it wasn't to be, but the lesson remains the same. It's a person. Rest in Peace David Amess, thoughts are with your family and loved ones, who should never have heard via twitter.

Where words become incantations and resurrect the dead, like the days of old. Sorkin is a great writer, unfortunately of a world called Narnia, not ours.

And this is the problem with the media and why they are dangerous most of the time in situations like this it’s who can report the most terrifying information first

Never watched the show but I dounderstand what is going on here, even the news story..and I'm a Brit! How cool is that! Not that I'm a Brit obviously..that doesn't need to be said, the fact that this is so well done I understood the context and the moral issues.
