Oh, those, chains, spinning chains! My dad worked as a roustabout on a workover rig. Every night he'd come home, hold his hands up and count " . . . 8, 9, 10, yep, a good day at work." Always got a laugh but he was serious, coming home with the same number of fingers, hands, limbs, that you started the day with.

Couple days ago I told one of the day shift guys I might be filling in on the rig that night (I'm usually a pipe tester) and he told me "you tell them you're throwing chain tonight, and that other dumbass can go catch samples." That evening, I get to the shop to meet up with the night crew, and told the derrick hand "Jake told me to tell you I'm throwing chain tonight" Next thing I know, sure enough they took me serious, and I'm throwing chain my first night on the rig lol

Fifty years ago, I studied to be an oil and gas drilling engineer and worked as an assistant driller on drilling rigs for two summers. This was in the Urals in the USSR. Then I worked as an assistant driller on a geological exploration drilling rig in Siberia for a summer. Then I built drilling rigs for oil and gas in Soviet Belarus. Even then, I realized that this work was not for me and after college I began working as a mechanic repairing equipment at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, survived the accident and still work as a mechanic repairing thermal mechanical equipment at boiler houses and power plants. All my fingers are in place. And even the hair on my head. But it is interesting and pleasant to watch how drillers work in the USA.

@p6x24 жыл бұрын
The chain helps fast screw the pipe until both ends are nudged close so you can use the tongs to make it up. This is the old way of doing it. Many fingers and even hands have been lost using that technique. Better technology is available now, replacing oilfield hands for a lot of the hard work.
@Saul1337Ftw4 жыл бұрын
@@p6x2 Ah, I see. But I assume that many prefer the old way and keep using it?
@p6x24 жыл бұрын
@@Saul1337Ftw Not really, unless it is a really bare bottom operation. I have seen using chains back in the 80's, when I started. I am certain chains are still in use, but it is a really archaic way of doing what pneumatic tongs and automatized rigs do faster and safer. As you know, rig time is expensive; along the years, everything got optimized and tripping in or out of hole is done as fast as possible. I agree that watching a skilled crew using a chain is entertaining to the layman's eye. Back when I started, so many of the rig floor hands had missing fingers... not by chance. Being 12 hours on a rig floor is demanding if you want to stay safe. Especially when making hole, tripping, running casing or completions.
